Country Casuals

Wondering if other Gransnet members are missing Country Casuals? It was my 'go to' store for Posh Frocks and seems to have been unique in offering dresses that were longer than 'on the knee'. Have just bought new one from ebay but wondering if any technical expert can tell me how to view old versions of the CC website to try to identify jackets and accessories that were intended to co-ordinate with the dress I have found? Then I may be able to make other ebay/preloved/gumtree purchases. The link from the Austin Reed Website just says that the CC name has been sold and an announcement will be made shortly. Any suggestions much appreciated.

Yes Cornishgirl I had noticed that after popping into our local EWM, they had quite a range of Country Casual, some were ok but a lot seemed a bit on the frumpy side.

Perhaps this a business opportunity for someone. There are loads of us out there and although I mainly dress for the allotment I do like to smarten up sometimes!

I miss CC so much. Admittedly I used to buy sale items only online, then have them delivered to my local shop for free (yes I know!) but now I miss them for all my dressy items.

Thanks hildajenni

Popped into my local EWM last week (I'm always hopeful their cashmere will be further reduced) and they stock a small amount on CC clothes. I was quite surprised and the staff said they'd had signs in the window for a while but I don't think there has been much publicity.

I loved Alexon trousers - they were always a good fit for me.

Alexon was my favourite for well priced classics that stood the test of time. If we lose any more like this we will all end up in Primark ?

They sell Country Casuals on line now. here is the link. They have some rather nice tops. I'm glad you reminded me about CC, I used to buy loads from them when they had a shop in Carlisle city centre.

I miss them too their quality was much better than the current M&S offering. I used to swear by Per Una jeans, kept their shape and lasted. Their current countries of manufacture don't really differ from Primark who of course are cheaper. Sad days for fashion conscious grans.

Jaeger is the latest fashion brand to go into administration - and the staff are told to turn up for work, but they may not get paid.

ps I agree about charity shops Jollyg - I found one in Blackheath when a daughter lived nearby, and bought a couple of things with expensive labels.

TriciaF Fri 14-Apr-17 13:27:42

Another reason for the poor quality of modern clothes seems to be the shortage of good quality fabrics. Especially wool.
I used to make a lot of my own clothes and could always find eg wool tweed by the yard, not too expensive. It's way out of my price range now. And many wool mills have closed down.
In a sewing thread someone mentioned that J. Lewis' fabric dept. is hardly worth visiting now - it used to be one of my favourite shopping destinations.

Seemingly CC can be bought in House of Fraser

Online will soon 'elcipse' all. Those charging high rents and rates will eventually get their come uppance!!

jollyg Thu 13-Apr-17 14:42:56

Sorry we are all dinosaurs, doing shopping on line. Who needs an expensive presence on the High St paying huge rates etc.

Suggest you look for a charity shop in a 'good' area with discerning shoppers, or buy a sewing machine or look for a good dressmaker.

Sadly its the way of the world these days.

I think EWW was a buy out too, and equally sells 'crap'

Welshwife Thu 13-Apr-17 14:09:42

No wonder it is hard to buy anything decent!

gangy5 Thu 13-Apr-17 14:06:53

Interesting article in the Telegraph today saying that a lot of nice clothes shops are closing as the current trend is to wear sloppy sports clothes. Jeager going into liquidation was mentioned. As if to confirm this - one large sports clothes chain - JD Sports - has published record profits - up 25%

I am sure that nobody on here would resort this sloppiness!!

PRINTMISS Thu 13-Apr-17 11:53:19

I think I saw on one of the 'catalogues' that I look at on line they were stocking Country Casuals. I will have a look see if I can find it.

I had a beautiful Jaeger outfit for my Ds wedding.
Sadly the marriage has gone the same way as the brand.

whitewave Thu 13-Apr-17 11:03:22

PS the shirts seem to be back but I haven't looked at them.

whitewave Thu 13-Apr-17 11:02:17

Jaeger has just gone into liquidationsad

Gabriolanana Thu 13-Apr-17 10:57:11

Ever been disappointed? I signed up to be notified when CC was back trading. Message landed in my inbox this week and I immediately opened the link.......only to find Edinburgh Woolen Mill have purchased the name and when you click on the link to dresses, there are just two styles both 100% synthetic and not even vaguely resembling the style of the real CC. You won't catch me that easily EWM!

whitewave Thu 21-Jul-16 07:26:15

It is a real pain as DH bought all his winter shirts from Viyella- the 20/80 wool cotton type. Fingers crossed that they will be bought and start trading again.

Gabriolanana Thu 21-Jul-16 02:44:30

I am presently in Canada, so had only looked online....and found nothing as Jalima reported. I will be back in Yorkshire in mid August so will look in stores, and hopefully there will some clearance items. Maybe the liquidators stock will turn up at the Batley Outlet Mill or similar. I will post if I find any and hope others will do so too.

Jalima Tue 19-Jul-16 14:38:22

None online!

I wonder if they had a franchise in your local store
