I am reliably informed by the Sunday Times Style supplement that ' gut health will dominate the beauty scene in 2017'. This learned journal implores us to take probiotic supplements to this end (price £47). I don't think I'll bother.

I think I'll continue with wholemeal bread, fruit and vegetables. Much cheaper.

Ah, inner beauty! Will Boots bring out a new range of healthy gut products and call it No 2 ? ?

A colonoscopy last year confirmed the beauty of my inner person, so I don't think I'll be paying heed to this nonsense.

I was told by a colorectal consultant not to take probiotics, it is questionable whether they survive the stomach acid anyway. There seems to be too much emphasis on inner cleanliness.

Trust me I'm a Doctor last week said much the same thing about all supplements.

I was really troubled by excess "wind" last year, uncomfortable and potentially embarrassing! At last I went to the GP, who actually recommended probiotics. I now take a supplement (from Holland and Barrett and not expensive), have a probiotic yoghurt every day and a cup of peppermint and liquorice tea each morning (lovely!). It may all be in the mind, but as a result of this I feel so much better and my symptoms have disappeared - unless, of course, I leave it too long between meals.
