Perfume - what are your favourites?

I love perfume and wear it every day. I've noticed recently though that some perfumes I have worn for years suddenly don't seem to have the same staying power. For instance my most recent purchase, Chanel Allure Sensuelle, is undetectable on me after an hour or so - it was EDP by the way. Its either my skin changing or the formulation as I've bought it in the past and don't remember having the same problem.

Does anyone have fragrance they can recommend? I'm looking for a summery one at the moment but would be interested in hearing suggestions generally.

I also find some perfumes give me a headache. Opium is one but Youth Dew by Estée Lauder gives me a dreadful headache and makes me gag. I have had to leave cinemas , restaurants etc if someone near is wearing it .

I tried the new Guerlain recently in Selfridges and both the sales "consultant " and I decided it was a clone of all the rash of recent celebrity named perfumes which to me all smell the same, rather too sweet.
My GD who was with me liked it, but she likes the type, Beyonce, Victoria Beckham etc.
They are not for the mature ( older) woman I think.

I went to try a couple yesterday. Strangely YSL and Guerlain seem to have launched a new perfume called Mon. I tried both but I'm not sure about either.

I find it difficult testing nowadays as few shops give samples to take away and try. It can be a long process, involving many trips to the store, trying two or three on your arms, allowing time to develop and deciding. I find that they all merge into one. Does anyone know if it's possible to take a vial into the shop and spray into it for testing at home?

Agent Provocateur for me. It used to be Chanel No 5, Oscar de la Renta, or Van Cleef & Arpels First.

Whatever perfume I wear seems to vanish quickly ( to me, anyway although maybe others can detect it.)
Chanel 5 is always lovely but I am using Lovely by Sarah Jessica Parker ( well, she gives her name to it) which is rather nice for daytime.

Maggiemay - I bought the candle (Jo Malone type) from Aldi but could hardly smell any fragrance when I lit it .

f77ms Wed 23-Aug-17 08:08:54

Perfume brings on a migraine for me but have found I can wear a small amount of Jo Malone with no ill effects ! Not sure why perfume does this , anyone else have the same happen ?

Maggiemaybe Wed 23-Aug-17 07:45:28

For those, like me, who love Jo Malone (English Pear and Freesia is another favourite) my DD tells me that Aldi are selling blatant copies of their candles. Half of me thoroughly disapproves of this, the other half will no doubt drag me there, as I could never afford the real thing.

A friend of mine had to leave one of the luxury candles at airport security - she had bought it as a wedding present. She was assured it would be destroyed, which cheered her up no end. sad

I too wear no. 15 by Liz Earle it smells exotic to me and I feel as if I have just come out of the casbah grin

Imperfect27 Wed 23-Aug-17 07:01:56

For some people it is shoes or handbags, for me a good perfume is my idea of a touch of luxury. The ones I keep returning to are J'Adore (Dior) and Cinema (Estee Lauder).
And Channel no.5. I love a quality perfume that lingers on scarves and cardigans the day after. I bought 2 Paul Smith fragrances in a summer sale this year, but find these are lighter and don't last the day.

But I really would like to find something else that I would actually like, when I was younger I loved Just Musk smile

Serkeen Wed 23-Aug-17 06:28:43

I only like Chanel or Escentric Molecules 01

Anything else just gives me a headache or I get quickly fed up of the smell

BBbevan Wed 23-Aug-17 05:52:29

I used to like Aqua Manda. That was discontinued. But I have recently seen it online. I am wary of buying it though. Will it still be the same and will I still like it? When I was young I also liked Charlie.

For summer I like Chanel Chance Eau Fraiche.

In winter I've been wearing a version of Chloe but this year I might try one of the new Opiums. I used to wear it a lot but then it got to seem old-fashioned. I'll be interested to try the new version.

My all-time favourite is Ferre by Ferre but it's discontinued now.

Dioressence was a favourite of mine phoenix , not used it for a long time. Might toddle off and mooch around the John Lewis perfume counters later this week and see if it still suits me. Thanks for the reminder.

phoenix Tue 22-Aug-17 22:41:19

PS I love Mitsouko, by Guerlain, wore it for years, but sadly Mr P doesn't like it. He buys me Opium.

phoenix Tue 22-Aug-17 22:38:06

Well, goodness knows where that post went!

I have different perfumes for seasons, for example when I had a proper, booted and suited job, my summer choice was Cristalle by Dior.

I also think that there are daytime and evening scents, the two that were always remarked on (by men, actually, but those I was meeting professionally, and please realise that was in a sort of corporate way, oh god that might seem even worse, I promise I was not in any way misbehaving blush)

Anyway, the daytime one was Dioressence (sort of soft, powdery smell, totally different from the other Dior scents with slightly similar names)

The evening one was Cinnabar, by Ester Lauder.

Chewbacca Tue 22-Aug-17 21:35:06

Marc Jacob's Daisy or Chanel 5 now. Perfumes I wore and enjoyed for years don't seem to suit me anymore, so I've got several bottles of half used perfume that I won't use. What do others do with their half used bottles?

Shirleyw Tue 22-Aug-17 20:09:37

My all time favourite is Azuree by Estée Lauder...it's one of the classics, ...I've been buying it for 38years lol...also I like opium and the opium black...

Leesa Tue 22-Aug-17 19:29:32

Opium and Obsession.
I bought Jean Paul Gaultier Classique and I was disappointed as I love their aftershave on my husband.

Baggs Tue 22-Aug-17 19:24:50

I hate all perfumes except very gentle, delicate flower perfumes. Natural ones. In flowers. Anything that comes out of a bottle or a bar of soap or whatever: YUCK!

Maggymay Tue 22-Aug-17 18:51:39

My favourite at the moment is Olympea by Paco Rabanne it's not overpowering quite light and summery.

BBbevan Tue 22-Aug-17 18:33:15

Snap Gagagran. I like sharp fruity smells. Hate things like Opium

Gagagran Tue 22-Aug-17 18:13:25

Jo Malone LimeBasil and Mandarin for me and I also like her Grapefruit one.

Jalima1108 Tue 22-Aug-17 17:50:21

My mum always wore that as well; I think it was actual perfume Maggiemaybe in tiny little blue bottles, rather than the cologne-type sprays we get nowadays.
