jeans that shrink a lot with each wash

I have three pairs of jeans which shrink such a lot with each wash that I have to wriggle my way into them and I can barely do up the button and zip. After about an hour's wear they are fine and comfortable again.I would think that I'd put on weight between wearings, but I have another pair which are the same size (bought from same store) and they never shrink in the wash. I just slip into them easily,Do other people have this problem?

This thread prompts me to ask ‘ when is one too old to wear jeans’?

Tessa101 Sun 18-Mar-18 21:14:13

Happens to all mine and has always happened since I purchased my first pair of Levi’s in the 60s. I was told it’s sonething to do with the way denim is made, apparently denim comes in criss cross pattern. Back then we were told when we brought them to put them on and sit in bath of hot water and they will shrink to your size.

Jeans don't need ironing. They look ridiculous with creases.

GabriellaG Sun 18-Mar-18 19:31:29

The OP is washing her jeans too frequently...unless she works in a dirty environment (at work)
Jeans can safely be worn 3-5 times before washing.
I assume we all shower or bathe daily and wear fresh underwear so why the need to wash jeans so often? It's madness.

My M and S jeans keep slipping down. I need a belt these days. It must be the design as I'm no thinner.

I love my M&S Jeans or Jeggings, I don't think I'll ever stop wearing them. Skinny ones look best on me even then I'm not a slim person but I've still got good legs. Rarely wear skirts. I have some M&S "long johns" almost like wearing a pair of tights but they are thermal, not bulky but keep my legs warm in winter.

I always switch to corduroy jeans in winter. They are definitely warmer than denim - I find denim aren't very wind and rain resistant, even the heavy weight ones.

Once again thank you everyone.I am going to look at 501s and NYDJ. I do find that better quality items last longer and are more economical in the long run.Watch this space!!

Luzdoh - I never wear skirts in the winter. I find jeans are warmer than other trousers but if it is very cold I wear leggings under jeans with two pairs of socks for going out. I used to wear leggings under trousers at work in a cold office and, if the heating wasn't working at all, I would wear jeans as a protest as they were banned, but warmer than trousers.

I have always found that the only jeans that fit are Levis 501 and yes, they are tighter when newly washed than once I have had them on for an hour or so.

All cheaper jeans either fit my waist or my bottom, but not both, so for obvious reasons I choose a pair that fit my beam end and then have to wear a belt to get them to hit my waist in spots!

Overthehills Sun 18-Mar-18 12:47:24

I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing jeans Mabon! I even have skinny ones (thanks to a Gran on here) and I have “sturdy” legs! They’re the most comfortable and cosy things. Must try the leggings under long skirts Luzdoh. To answer your question Gormenghast - not when you have sturdy legs! wink

lesley4357 Sun 18-Mar-18 12:18:19

ASOS own brand jeans are great - very soft and fit really well. About £50 a pair.

luzdoh Sun 18-Mar-18 11:37:22

gormenghast yes
(In a word, as they say.)
However, I now prefer jeans with 2% stretch fibre in them so it's not that bad.
Do you, or all of you, find jeans aren't warm enough in this cold weather? I was out last night which is very rare for me and saw lots of people wearing jeans in the freezing conditions. It's the cold that makes me value a thick quite long skirt over thick tights or leggings with warm socks and winter boots! (indoors!) Maybe I'm getting old....

I buy from Bon Marche and buy the ones with Lycra. They do shrink slightly on washing but are fine when I put them on

annodomini Sun 18-Mar-18 11:01:15

I remember the blue legs I acquired when I went off with my sister on a hitch-hiking holiday in the Trossachs where it rained non-stop on my new jeans. As I also had crippling blisters, I took the opportunity to catch the first available bus and take my blue legs home to Mum who had a good laugh. grin

Elenkalubleton Sun 18-Mar-18 10:46:28

Sheilasue, you have to read the label, anything more than 2% Lycra and they start to sag.M&S do both 2% & 3% jeans I think.

Sheilasue Sun 18-Mar-18 10:33:08

I have a pair from M&S which are nice and tight for a while
Then they go baggy again I am everlasting pulling them up
My h jeans are the same.

elfies Sun 18-Mar-18 09:57:20

Saggi, can you remember the blue dyed legs after sitting in hot water to shrink the jeans ...not to mention getting told off by your mum for staining the bath

mabon1 Sun 18-Mar-18 09:34:27

I have never owned a pair of jeans. I hate jeans me they are a reminder of cowboy's trousers. I know they are very popular but I will never ever been seen in a pair of jeans.

Saggi Sun 18-Mar-18 09:32:44

Talking of jeans being tight..... does anyone out there remember the fifties and sixties when extremely tight jeans were a ‘must have’....and to achieve this figure hugging effect we put them on and sat in a bath of extremely hot water to ‘shrink to fit ‘ tightness!! Am I and my mates the only ones??

Missfoodlove Sun 18-Mar-18 09:18:06

Gormenghast. Every year I buy a pair of NYDJ jeans, I tend to get a summer pair and a winter pair and have always managed to get them reduced at TKMAXX or in John Lewis sale.
The retail is around £135.00 however they wear so well, the fit is amazing and they really do make you look a size smaller. My oldest pair are 10 years old and still look fine. I paid an eye watering amount for a pair of NYDJ smart black trousers 3 years ago but I have worn them so many times and they look like new still.
I find it’s false economy for me to buy any other brand as I always revert back to NYDJ. My latest pair were £9 in TKMAXX !

OldMeg Sun 18-Mar-18 06:54:25

And only wash them at 30oC

Willow500 Sun 18-Mar-18 06:51:48

How are you drying them? I usually hang mine over a towel stand in the bedroom in the winter or on the line in the summer but I never tumble them. Anything with lycra in shouldn't be tumble dried. It's weird how some clothes seem to shrink in the wash - even from the same stores. I have so many pairs of jeans in the wardrobe that I feel uncomfortable in now - not just because they're tighter either. My skin seems to shrink in the winter too - it's definitely not fitting my body at the moment grin

gormenghast Sat 17-Mar-18 12:31:35

Thanks to everyone.
My jeans are from M and S.Two pairs which shrink and one pair which doesn't. All the same style! I will try Tu and Cotton Traders though! Can anyone recommend any of the more expensive ones for best.

BBbevan Mon 05-Mar-18 21:33:15

I mostly wear skinny jeans and have found Tu, M&S and Cotton Traders to be good. They do not shrink and except for the black ones, keep their colour
