Wow, MissAdventure. I note that the doctor was a man! I will go back to the GP for advice. As it's on the side of my face, I don't usually notice it, but lately it is rising so much above the skin surface! Thanks for all the replies!

I had a Nanny McPhee mole on my face, and was referred to an nhs dermatology dept, who told me that they are too overrun to remove things 'just in case'.
I decided to pay privately, and was told it would cost around 1000 pounds, although this was a good few years ago.
However, the doctor I saw privately said she felt it was quite reasonable for it to be removed on the nhs, and she bypassed the dermatology dept and referred me straight away for day surgery.
My doctor seemed quite cross, but I thought it might be that he didn't think a great big hairy mole was a big deal.

My son has had quite a few moles removed from his body over the last couple of years - I believe he just asked his doctor. I had a large mole on my shoulder removed about 30 years ago which did need several stitches and had to be done in a clinic but things have moved on a long way since then. Speak to your doctor again and ask how you can have it removed.

In my student nurse days I assisted at the Skin Clinic where many many non malignant lesions were removed but whether this service has gone the way of the cuts I do not know. Best to consult your GP she/he will know.
