I’m going on a cruise soon and want to feel confident in my evening dress. Can anyone recommend some good shapewear that is not going to make me feel like a stuffed sausage please?

Thanks for the laugh Nanabilly
Now I keep thinking of the Royal Shapewear Company and the Royal Shapewear Theatre gringrin

My DD recommends Asda for shapewear. How she knows about it I'm not sure as she's a size 8-10 and is 5'7" tall.

You’re very kind Jalima1108 and Belgravian you gave me a good laugh.

By the end of the cruise you will be wishing you'd never bought the darned thing anyway!

I once overdid shape wear by doubling up, with two different ones really hard to put on but persevered. Bad idea. It was a hot evening...Had been Asked to dinner with new friends, slapped on some makeup, did hair, wanted to look good as my new friend was extremely slim and glamorous. We had a glass of wine...
Fast forward to the meal, just about to start my main course, fish, without warning passed out at the dinner table, only briefly but they called 999 and I was carted away by ambulance, evening cut short and after seeing a consultant was advised to hand in my driving licence. Didn’t get it back for a year...after a battle...
And all because the lady was making an effort to look smooth and not lumpy.
I like the lumpy look now . It’s safer,

silverling48 - how awful for you!

There is also the delicate mention that if you have wind, those garments are so tight, they might swell up like a balloon! blush

Poor you Silver Lining!
Definitely going to suck in now and use my Pashmina.

Cruising!

I once wore an all in one out to family lunch. . It was a very hot day.
During the meal I could stand it no longer. I was got and itchy all over.....I mean really itchy !!

Off to the loo where I trailed it off and stuffed it in my handbag, could hardly shut the bag.

Problem was, being an all in one it meant I had no bra and I am very blessed in the boob dept. No matter, I held my handbag in front of me for the rest of the day.

Unfortunately for me, after the meal it was agreed that it was a perfect afternoon for a leisurely walk along the marina.

Never again.

Hot..... Not got

marian I’ll own now I haven’t read all this thread, just want to say a cruise is the veey worst place to consider shapewear. You will need to be able to breathe, laugh and eat smile. Far better to be comfortable.

Dont worry there are all shapes and sizes, you don't have to wear an evening dress. At the formal dos there were all sorts of dresses worn. No one will say anything if u dont dress up as long as you don't wear jeans. I never went to formal dos as I'm not confident but I watched the dressy ups from the lounge and would say that if I cruise again I will just take a summer frock and that will be enough. There were lots of muffin tops and fat bellies everywhere. So do not worry

The Loveboat.

This is why I avoid belts as I'd look like a sausage pulled in (vainly) in the middle. I'd recommend long floaty garments.
It reminds me of a little joke:
What did the zero say to the figure eight?
Nice belt.

I have lots of shapewear from different places. I never wear it as it's so uncomfortable and it stays in my chest of drawers.

Blinko Mon 28-May-18 10:37:55

How do you go to the loo in some of this stuff?

David1968 Mon 28-May-18 10:44:29

I'm a large size and I'd never, ever, wear "shapewear". I find that a good bra, Sloggi-style knickers (full size - no skimpy ones!) and wearing something I feel comfy and smart in, keeps the smile on my face. (Uncomfortable clothes and footwear will always "show" on your face.) Stay happy and dress for comfort, is my advice. Then you'll look you best and have a great time!

I ALWAYS come back at least 1/2 if not a stone heavier from a cruise - why would you care what anyone thinks of your probably non existent muffin top? Lovely floaty 3/4 length tops, elastic waist bands for anything under and a radiant smile do the trick for me (with lots of flowers etc on my head as adornments - probably so stunned by my gorgeousness no one thinks to look lower) - getting back on the 5/2 diet on return part of the price for indulgence. Stuff the spanx - gave them away unworn when I couldn't get it oast one tight let alone tum tum.

Jalima1108 Mon 28-May-18 10:55:55

Quite right peaches and if the shapewear fits on Day 1 it certainly won't by Day 14!
