My favourite pick-me-up - scarves! What’s yours?

Rather like a new lippy my go-to “pick me up” is invariably a new scarf, in fact I find them almost impossible to resist.
Whether it’s a £6 cheapo from our local market (great selection, fantastic value) or one from Joules who design them in colourways to go with their Harbour tops or my latest, a pashmina made of recycled cashmere from Turtle Doves, they just lift my spirits.
I am incapable of parting with any of them too, so I have drawers full! blush

Maw...I am so glad I am not alone with my scarfoholism (thanks Pamalaga). I have about 50-60 and my family consider this quite eccentric! I love them and wear them! Now I can refer them to this thread, and prove I am not at all odd or alone in this scarfoholism!

Can't do scarves, even in winter, or polo neck jumpers. Can't stand anything round my neck l feel as though I'm choking however loose they are. My cheer me up is yarn and a new knitting or crochet project.

Would quite like to try a scarf but anything touching my neck brings me out in a very hot sweat. Been the same since I was a child. Luckily I don't feel the cold much.

Maw...Another scarfaholic here....but ....."pashmina made of recycled cashmere from Turtle Doves".......that's a new one on me. Got me thinking whether the feral pigeons that plague my garden might be put to good use hmm

NfkDumpling Wed 06-Jun-18 11:05:53

Scarves here too. Dangling in front they hide my belly!

Nanny41 Wed 06-Jun-18 11:02:00

I love scarves too, but I can never get them right somehow, I dont look elegant like some women do.

toscalily Wed 06-Jun-18 10:34:58

Scarf-aholic. Didn't know there was a name for it but I definitely have it. Some have been expensive gifts, well known names, silk and cashmere. Others, also gifts but budget buys that I like to think were chosen with care so just as meaningful. Treats for myself, charity shop, a reminder of a day out, do I need an excuse? NO. I do try to hold to the rule, one in, one out but the one coming out usually goes back in.

Yep, lots and lots of scarves. I have a long neck of which I used to be very proud, now it’s just somewhere for even more wrinkles to gather! grin Gave a lot of warm ones to refugees recently but there are many I just couldn’t bear to part with.

I completely agree, MawBroon. I adore scarves and have loads of them. And I actually do wear them all the time in Spring, Autumn and definitely Winter... but not so much in summer of course. I feel naked around my neck without a scarf, and I've got some gorgeous ones in all colours, fabrics, a couple of hand knitted, etc. And when I get an attack of shopping fever but can't afford much then a scarf is a wonderfully cheap way of feeding my fever.
I've quite often bought a scarf for a friend's birthday, whatever, and them kept them as I can't bear parting with it. I think I am a scarfaholic.

I like to knit complicated scarves, lacy and cable, I have a box full of them and not much idea what to do with them!

grannytotwins Wed 06-Jun-18 10:06:13

Beau, I agree with you. I’m envious of people who can wear scarves and look elegant, but I feel silly as if I’m wearing them wrong. I’ve even had comments that I look awkward when wearing them. I’d love to cover my wrinkled neck, but have given up.

JaneD3 Wed 06-Jun-18 09:54:14

I have two drawers of scarves and they are overflowing! As a short****, I don’t feel swamped ?

Greciangirl Wed 06-Jun-18 09:52:13

I have a drawerful of scarves and hardly use any of them.
I always seem to wear the same two, over and over again.

I feel comfortable with these two, whereas with all the others, I’m not quite sure what to do with them or how to wear them
.
Must have a sort out.

Nannan2 Wed 06-Jun-18 09:49:18

My pick -me-up is a new magazine or book, being an avid reader! Or getting my hair coloured if i can afford.

Pamaga Wed 06-Jun-18 09:47:43

I too suffer from scarfoholism. I can't count how many I have. I did a Colour Me Beautiful consultation a while back so tried to cull those that did not match my palette, i.e. that were in colours that didn't suit me. I feel they transform an outfit and can be used to create so many looks! I especially love ones with fringes, tassels and beading. I was narked recently as I bought one in M&S at full price and then, a week later, there was a 20% off on Sparks card. Unfortunately, in my haste to wear it, I had removed the label so could not return it! Scarf-aholics of Gransnet unite!

Nannan2 Wed 06-Jun-18 09:46:37

I like the IDEA of scarves, and some are soft and look very pretty, but i dont wear them,as i cant stand them being around my neck all the time,it becomes irritating after a while! Im not entirely sure they suit me anyway- as im a short person i may look 'swamped' i think ?

shysal Wed 06-Jun-18 09:37:57

Oh no, Maw! I have 5 Joules Harbour tops so will have to have a look at the matching scarves. They do finish an outfit and I have dozens of small ones. I don't like the big ones that dangle in whatever I am doing and tangle with my spec chain.

grannyactivist Wed 06-Jun-18 09:31:35

I have a gazillion scarves because they're an 'easy' gift to buy for a woman when you don't know her very well - many of mine were 'thank you' gifts.
However, my pick-me-up of choice will always be flowers. When we were very poor I always imagined how lovely it would be to have enough money to buy flowers - not expensive bouquets, just your common or garden bunch of freesias or pinks etc. Now I tend to have flowers in two or three rooms all the time; at this time of year some are garden flowers and I have a very prettily scented rose bush outside my window that keeps one little vase occupied.

wildswan16 Wed 06-Jun-18 09:28:32

I'm so glad I read this thread. I was feeling a bit guilty at the five scarves in my drawer. Now I know I should definitely buy lots more.

downtoearth Wed 06-Jun-18 09:05:12

I am also a scarf lover and have many,to liven up a plain top or outfit.

Allegretto Wed 06-Jun-18 08:16:12

I have many scarves and often have one draped around me. They give an outfit a lift, give me a bit of colour when required and keep me cosy when it’s chilly. I bought 2 on Monday (one a lovely coral colour and one white with a discreet sparkle)!

seacliff Wed 06-Jun-18 08:00:18

I too love scarves, not sure how many I have.

I wear very soft drapey scarves in winter indoors, . If my neck is cosy I feel warm all over, they are great with the air con at work. . I like the look, it livens up just a plain boring jumper.

M0nica Wed 06-Jun-18 07:15:47

I do not wear scarves, I have a short neck, which means I tend to look like Kilroy peeping above his wall when I wear a scarf. I envy those swan necked women who always look so elegant in scarfs. I don't!

Probably as a result of the neck problem, if ever I do wear a scarf, I find they get in the way, dangerous when cooking but great crumb catchers when eating biscuits or toast.

Eloethan Wed 06-Jun-18 00:10:10

Beau I know what you mean. They always look so elegant draped artlessly round other people but I think they just look plain silly on me.

DanniRae Tue 05-Jun-18 22:55:16

Winter scarves - yes
Any other scarves - I am the same as Beau and feel self conscious.
My pick me up is the same as MOnica - a magazine or a phone call to a friend for a good old chat.
