Sick of stripes!

Going through the wardrobe to find something to wear to a lunch patty today, where I knew it was best bibs and tuckers, I realised that 99% of my tops which I like wearing with white linen trousers are striped
It is partly because I buy a lot from Joules and that is very much their style, but the Market Harborough meet up picture convinced me that stripes do little for me (think barrel) so what possessed me to buy them?
The jaunty Breton matelot look is clearly what I had in mind but oh dear....not quite the effect I was aiming for. Why are so many summer tops striped?
Settled on this shirt - eventually

I tend to buy quite a lot of stripes too.
I always think they look crisp and neat, but actually 'barrel' is probably a better description.
Your shirt looks lovely! smile

MissAdventure Fri 27-Jul-18 17:41:22

Just had to come back to say you look lovely too!

kittylester Fri 27-Jul-18 17:41:31

I didn't think you looked like a barrel. Stripes were the only thing available a couple of years ago - I blame Sea Salt!!

I love your shirt too!!

I don't mind stripes and I've got several stripy tops, but I agree that it would be nice to have the choice of something a little more understated and original for a change.

I think your shirt is very nice and looks good on you. I find myself buying stripes, there are rather a lot of them around it seems.

I do like to blouse maw. I steer clear of horizontal stripes just because I look like a little rotund thing. I do have a shirt with vertical stripes which is more slimming.

MiniMoon Fri 27-Jul-18 18:56:34

Your blouse. Where did to come from.

SueDonim Fri 27-Jul-18 19:27:50

Go into M&S and view their new autumn/winter collection, MawBroon and you'll have spots before your eyes! grin

MawBroon Fri 27-Jul-18 19:41:03

It’s M&S linen-mix and irons a treat.

starbird Fri 27-Jul-18 19:44:20

Love that blouse.

I recently realized that I have seven striped summer t shirts!

J52 Fri 27-Jul-18 19:53:32

Did you get that blouse in MH? As I said at the time ‘ step away from the stripes’! If only I could ?
Spots are a great alternative. Till they drive you dotty ........

Marydoll Fri 27-Jul-18 20:16:33

I thought your striped top was lovely Maw
I was looking online at a similar one today.?

Mapleleaf Sat 28-Jul-18 22:13:50

You look lovely in that blouse, Maw.

MawBroon Sat 28-Jul-18 22:29:08

No, the shirt was from my local M&S.
Stripes are fine but what is it about summer that makes every label want to peddle the Breton sailor look - especially as none of us looks remotely like one grin

I’ve just got a striped top out to wear tomorrow. Maybe it’s going back in the wardrobe hmm.

Happiyogi Thu 09-Aug-18 11:19:47

My name is Happi and I too have a wardrobe full of stripes...

I've just heard that Radio 4 have a programme at 11.30 this morning "exploring the curious history of the horizontal stripe and its use down the centuries". I imagine it'll also be available to catch up on later by anyone currently out flaunting their stripes!

jeanie99 Fri 17-Aug-18 08:51:35

I too have lots of striped tops.

Teetime Fri 17-Aug-18 09:07:26

I'm fed up with stripes too and have consigned my 3 Joules tops to the charity bag- I tend to shop mainloy from White Stuff but I am looking further afield for some nice autumn tops/jumpers- I'm a cold body.

At first, I didn't really relate to this thread because I don't own many striped garments. Or ......

....maybe I need to think again. I've just taken in the washing and realised that the 15 garments on the line included the following (all mine): striped tee shirt, striped cotton tunic, striped PJs, striped sleep-tee and a striped kitchen apron.

And yesterday I received an order from Lands End: a striped dress and another striped tee shirt!

I am quite a lover of stripes and I like the breton look but after hearing our Maw`s valued description the word barrel is now going round and round my head!!!

Your shirt looks lovely Maw and strangely enough I would be more interested if it has any lemon/yellow in it?
Just bought a super pair of tweed trousers for the autumn,a mixture of greys, creams, and ochre with a very narrow black stripe running lengthways.........it has a belt of the same material. The model wearing same has a lovely long sleeved blouse with this lemon colour but apart from the price I don`t like the neckline........so am looking out for a similar.Hope that makes sense?
M & S maybe having a visit tomorrow!w

Snap, Maw Broon.
I too have the same blouse, one of the best things M+S have produced in a LONG time. I get so many compliments whenever I wear it and what I particularly love is that you can team it up with so many different colours.
M+S please take note. More clothing like this please.
