What would make me look younger?

Any ideas on what ages us and what makes us look younger?
All I can think of: a flattering haircut, a straight back, a bright lipstick, walking easily.
And what makes us look older?
Any ideas?

Loved the M and S comment with which I completely agree. Do they have teenage designers who go by a picture of granny thirty years ago or do they think Mrs Brown on the TV is our style icon?
I have also decided that I'll go back to looking in the Jacques Vert range when I'm over 80!

merlotgran
You saved me typing the very same opinion(s)
Why many older women wear scarves/pashminas over one shoulder...I really can't understand.

Another thing to add to my previous comment.
Find out which colours suit you.
I look better in Autumn shades than bright colours like bright red or bright blue or black or navy
Someone mentioned wearing a bright lipstick but I know that if I did that I would look awful so I stick to my pale colours.
Try to get hold of the book "Colour me beautiful 'by Carole Jackson.
By sticking to the colour palette which suits you you will look better and can do more mixing a nd matching so need fewer clothes.

I was in the Lake District a few weeks ago wearing dresses not for walking but for dinner in the evenings. I shall be there again in another couple of weeks I love to put a nice dress on for dinner.

1) Wear clothes made from natural fabrics not fabrics made from man made fibre.
2) Don't dye your hair a dark colour
3) Have a natural looking hairstyle -length not below your shoulders.
4)Wear dresses.
Two days ago I was in the Lake District.
It was a lovely sunny day and I was wearing a linen dress.
I did not notice one other person in my age group wearing a dress.
The town was full of pensioners ,mostly women and most were wearing beige ,brown ,grey or black trousers.
Depressing.

lemon grove, people have said I glide when I walk but ten days ago I had my right hip replaced and although there is only about a quarter inch difference in leg length I can’t say I’m gliding at the moment! Early days and I’m just pleased that this early on I can manage steps without a stick...but I’m being careful. The lack of exercise before and after this op have rendered me far weightier so that’s another thing ageing me at present. The cellulite doesn’t show up so much under the bruise!

I always wondered at what age do you suddenly feel like ohhh I must get some brogues a tweed skirt and a quilted jacket. Or does it creep up on you. I think attitude keeps you young

Duvetdiva Fri 07-Sept-18 08:22:06

Fiorentina51 I love your grandson’s comment! That should go viral ?

Yellowmellow Fri 07-Sept-18 08:06:49

All of the above....attitude is important. My dear old mum used to say , think old, you act old, and you get old.
I remember seeing a documentary on Bruce Forsythe and he used to walk around his pool(we would have to improvise!!), practising 'not walking like an old person'. The shuffle and the arms that don't move as you walk is a giveaway!
Put on a nice smile, nothing worse than that 'slapped bum' look'....so ageing

I have 70+ freind who had dentures all her life . Then she she got teeth implants . Really took the years off .
So after hair I would say teeth . Get them looking the best you can afford .

Agree about the “post-menopausal” hair cut, I see so many ladies with short back and sides, and they have usually not even bothered with a dab of lipstick. Also wearing beige is an instant ager. Don’t give up!

One of the things that can make you look older is poor posture and stiffness - although I realise some people have health problems which makes this worse. So, if you can, stand tall and and do those stretching exercises!!

OldMeg Fri 07-Sept-18 07:52:08

Someone upthread mentioned supermarket trolleys. I look around at those who lean over them, which makes bottoms stick out too, and force myself to stand up straight and not give in to that stance.

It would be easy to.

OldMeg Fri 07-Sept-18 07:49:34

I have two mirrors. One makes me look younger and healthier and the other shows every wrinkle and sag.

I use both (the cruel one is great for finding that hair on your chin) but I always look in the kind one last, before I leave the house.

As long as no one mistakes him for your son or nephew! Earlier this year my DS made a rare decision to accompany me to church when he was visiting for the weekend. At the end of the service a lady in the pew in front with whom I have a nodding acquaintance turned around and asked, "is this your husband?"
My son is 25 and I am pushing 60 far harder than I care to admit! I laughed heartily but poor DS looked horrified!

mumofmadboys, you ask what's wrong with scarves. Well, as a former lover of scarves I've now stopped wearing them except for warmth in winter because I suddenly realised that wearing a scarf all the time tells everybody that you're trying to hide a turkey neck? It doesn't work btw, just draws attention to your neck. Ditto polo neck jumpers.

Morethan2, there are at least 2 of us. I could have written your post word for word.

Saggi Fri 07-Sept-18 07:34:01

Oh Scribbles you made me smile. Everything you said and more. Especially the short trouser thing. Even my mum aged 92 when she died and as 'straight as a ramrod'...used to say to me " looks like their trousers have had a row with their ankles" she hated that 'look'. She always had her hair done once a week... always a straight back even after two hip and on knee replacement in her eighties! She couldn't abide the slouched over but " oh well I'm old" approach to life. If I saw much as sloped a shoulder walking with a heavy shopping bag she'd be on me like a whippet telling me to stand up straight and look the world in the eye. She never liked my husband for all those reasons.... he was sloppy at 25 ... shuffled...mumbled.... and NEVER looked the world in the eye! She called it lazy and slovenly. And about him shed proved to be right. So.....stand up straight... good haircut... NO elastic aged waistlines .... excercis.( swimming three times weekly in my case) and a good three mile walk every day. And keep the brain alive all of you . And LISTEN to young people, they have so much to teach us!

Ah MawBroon, Barbara Pym, a shared pleasure. I only discovered BP a few years ago and am just loving working my way through her books. She is an absolute delight. Her books are not so readily available in Australia, even in libraries, so I order them from UK online booksellers.

dear old Doreen, much beloved by so many. Why couldn't she be Stacey or La'Toya or Lauren?

Teetime Thu 06-Sept-18 22:25:29

Love it Telly

loopyloo Thu 06-Sept-18 21:03:41

Well my new Doreen bra has arrived, the healthy eating regime starts tomorrow so thanks for all the advice!

Telly Thu 06-Sept-18 20:01:28

Wearing clothes that are really frumpy! M&S have a good selection that will add years on most people. So to look, and most importantly feel, younger dress well and keep an eye on fashion without being a slave to it. Keeping interested in the world and people in general. Be open to new ideas and experiences when you get the chance. Buy the best make up you can afford and apply it gently. Smile. All helps.

oldbatty Thu 06-Sept-18 19:38:00

what if you are realistic and happy in your mold/mould

M0nica Thu 06-Sept-18 19:26:03

I listed them on page 1. I would only add, be confident to be yourself and don't anyone push you into a mold, least of all the 'age appropriate' mold.
