At what age do I stop using eye makeup? I am 81 and don't want to look like mutton dressed as lamb.I stopped using eye liner last year and now just use eye shadow and have my eyebrows tinted.I have white hair. Please advise.

My mother used all sorts of make up her entire life from 14 to 92. She certainly had some subtle eyeshadow and mascara in her 90's though i don't think her poor eyesight made eyeliner easy, so she never wore that. At 62 I have discovered eyelash extensions, don't laugh, they make an amazing difference to how I look and I need only a tin application of mascara on the lower lashes and a slick of subtle shadow to go with them. Highly recommended.

I am 73 and would not be seen without eye makeup at least. I use all Look Fabulous Forever products and follow their guidelines for "Over 70". By using their Eye Prime, makeup truly stays put all day. Use their wedge-shaped brush too to PUSH dark eye shadow into the eyelash roots to get a smudgy effect - much more flattering than a hard line when you have crepey lids.

Some of the tops brands are noticing a movement in makeup. We (as the consumer) want more. We not only want more natural ingredients, but we want a pure addition to our daily makeup needs. While some brands have been working on this for years, others are just beginning and making a real impact by launching brave new innovations using not only organic but vegan ingredients. Here is a selection of the top organic makeup products you can buy.

One hint I read about make-up when older was to have a good magnifying mirror, as sight gets worse! I have one which sticks to window with suction cup so get good light too. It’s a bit scary looking in it and seeing all the wrinkles, hairs growing in wrong place but it helps to get make-up on straight.

I have eyelash extensions done every four weeks. Individual lashes are added between your existing lashes. A few fall out between appointments but they make a big difference and really open your eyes up. No more need for mascara.

Lullydully I use eyelash curlers. When I first heard of these I thought 'why', but they do make a difference. Also I find put the first couple of layers of mascara on almost dry, use an old one. After that use your wet one. Also blink a bit whilst applying and this seems to lift the eyelashes.

I have to use waterproof mascara as my eyes water sometimes

Thanks, NanKate, that's helpful to know... I think I'll go for it. On the rare occasions when I wear mascara I find it tricky applying it as I can't really see what I'm doing very well! Then, just when I think the jobs done, I put my spex on and check in the mirror and see this clown gazing back at me and have to start all over again!

I have had mine tinted once before Joy and they first of all put a dab of the chemical they use behind your ear a couple of days beforehand to check you are not allergic. On the day they put cotton wool eye pads below your eyes you then close you eyes they carefully paint on the dye. You lie there listening to relaxing music and 10 minutes later they check it has taken and voila you have darker lashes (black or brown). It costs between £15 - £20.

I rarely wear eye make-up now as my eyes seem to have become very sensitive and get red and itchy. I've tried various brands but they all seem to have the same effect. The idea of having lashes tinted had never occurred to me till I read this thread so I'd like to try that but am a bit worried about dyes/chemicals so close to my eyes, I did have bletharitis about a year ago. Anyone got any advice about this?

mollyc Tue 23-Oct-18 20:28:55

Thank you all so much for your advice I will continue with my eye make up but without the eye liner.I will also go on line to Look Fabulous Forever. Thank you Freyja.

I am having my eyelashes tinted on Friday to avoid having to wear mascara as I have dry eye which oddly makes my eyes water and my eye make up get messy. I paint in my eyebrows each morning with eye shadow and it makes a great difference.

I bought a lovely lipstick from Natural Collection at Boots the other day, I think it was about £3.00 and it is great.

Just caught up with this thread. Sadly no amount of serum or tinting will bring the lashes back. They are shedding due to alopecia. Just thought false ones would give me something to flutter again....or maybe just grow old gracefully .

I have never seen my next-door neighbour without her makeup, no matter what time of day it is. She confided in me, recently, that she has rosacea, and has always put on her makeup first thing in the morning.

She told me that her husband has seen her put it on for many years. "I've told him," she said, "That if he wakes up one morning and finds me dead, he is to put on my makeup before phoning the doctor!"

I wonder if the poor man will comply, if the time comes. the mind boggles!

Lancslass1 Mon 22-Oct-18 18:15:54

I am probably in the minority but I don't like eyeliner at all-even on younger women

As for mascara.......
I was advised by an assistant in Boots to use No7 Stay Perfect which is light and doesn't smudge.
I don't use powder either but just use No7 Stay Perfect foundation.
I believe less is more as we age .
I was once told that as long as you ie some form of moisturiser your skin will be fine so at night I use coconut oil or baby bottom butter.

gilld69 Mon 22-Oct-18 18:03:15

im only 49 but ill be wearing my make up till the day i meet my maker if you feel good keep wearing whatever you like x

Gma29 Mon 22-Oct-18 17:06:09

Keep wearing whatever makes you feel good! Look Fabulous Forever has some very helpful “how to” clips, and it’s aimed at an older audience, so the looks are not done on 18 year olds with perfect skin! You obviously don’t need to buy their products, but it might help to reassure you, seeing other makeup looks.

Squiffy Mon 22-Oct-18 17:03:43

Jaxie I forgot to mention that I use their eyeshadow as eyeliner. It’s a powder and very easy to use. The jars look tiny, but a little goes a very long way!!

Squiffy Mon 22-Oct-18 16:52:14

Jaxie If you Google ‘jtshop.uk’ it should come up. They sell on eBay as well. HTH ?

M0nica Mon 22-Oct-18 16:22:44

Well I am 75, wearing well, though I say it myself, and I intend to continue nurturing my skin and wearing make-up, especially eye make up, as long as I am able to do it.

DD recently encouraged me to get my eyebrows shaped and tinted and I cannot understand why I didn't start doing it years ago. The difference it makes, especially as my eyes have always been one of my better features, is incredible.

I have never used eyeliner. Eyebrows and eyelashes are what I have concentrated on so always wear mascara, and tint my brows as mentioned above.

Overthehills Mon 22-Oct-18 16:11:26

As many have said - as we get older less is more.
But nothing is just, well, nothing! Keep going, I certainly will!

Theoddbird Mon 22-Oct-18 16:09:07

I use eyeshader for liner...just push it into base of lashes with a sponge thingie...much softer than liner. No age limit on wearing makeup

123kitty Mon 22-Oct-18 15:53:41

If you like makeup and it makes you feel good- don't stop wearing it. I like lightly applied waterproof mascara which doesn't smudge or run, but find eyeshadow in any bright colour ageing.
