size 18 ish maybe? An older lady with shoulder length grey hair wearing, a pleated checked skirt ( mostly greys), knee length boots, a grey top with a checked woolen poncho, a soft grey beret and orange lipstick.

It looked brilliant.

Confidence....just a little bit...is all that is needed. I keep an old baggy shirt I used to 'hide' in to remind me never to dress like that again

dogsmother Tue 11-Dec-18 13:50:23

I change between electric blue and purple for my grey fringe.
As I recall when I was a child grandmother s mainly had blue or purple rinses didn’t they.
As for clothes I am hopeless ? but day to day it doesn’t really matter so long as you hold your head high.

well...…...having been reduced from smart to living in oversize clothing, unable to wash properly or wash my hair all because of a fractured shoulder and getting thoroughly depressed I asked the health visitor what have I been reduced to......she replied "a human being". That didn't help folks - women like to look good - it's nature and why the hell not!

I do like a good scarf! Does wonders for the turkey neck but also a chance to introduce another colour.

SueDoku Tue 11-Dec-18 13:31:40

I saw a woman about my age (late 60s) with gorgeous, sharply-cut short hair dyed several different shades of purple/plum. She looked fantastic smile
I mentioned it to DGD (6) saying that I quite fancied having my hair dyed a similar colour -- she looked absolutely horrified and informed me that Grandmas didn't have purple hair..!!! shock
Now I'm even more tempted... Mwahaha...grin

Lisagran Tue 11-Dec-18 13:18:29

No, not me Mawbroon - I wish it was! You definitely wouldn’t mistake me for Melania grin I’m quite a bit chunkier!

janeainsworth Tue 11-Dec-18 12:56:41

You can bet that the stylish lady had spent a lot of money on those clothes

I wouldn’t bet that at all, grannie62

My current favourite coat cost £40 last year from Tesco. I think it looks good, anyway.
It’s not what you spend on individual items that matters, but how you put them together, and as others have said, having confidence in yourself makes all the difference.

Saggi Tue 11-Dec-18 12:54:29

Lemongrove!! Have you seen some the stylish women out there with ‘long grey hair’....not afraid to look their age and enjoy it....my hero
Getmaine Greer springs to mind! It’s all in the ‘cut’,.. pay s good price from a great hairdresser and job done. No dyes ..no tints...no faffing about !!

Jalima1108 Tue 11-Dec-18 12:52:25

What are your good bits

I just washed and blow dried my hair, it doesn't look too bad smile

Jalima1108 Tue 11-Dec-18 12:51:49

What are your good bits.
um, um, um

What I need to do is to throw out all my clothes and start again - if I could find anything.
Where are all these stylish clothes?
I was helpless with laughter looking at some of the stuff in a well-known High Street store last week (along with a friend, so it wasn't just me).

hdh74 Tue 11-Dec-18 12:50:46

I need my comfort too much to even try for stylish but my DD says I do a good 'quirky' - she said I'm like Karen who was on the last bake-off. I'll take that.

Kim19 Tue 11-Dec-18 12:49:54

J1108 stop putting yourself down. Like most of us, I bet you can scrub up well. However, I would say to all of us, myself top of the list, try to invest in properly fitting undergarments and the rest will be much improved. Took me a long time to concede then practise this.

MawBroon Tue 11-Dec-18 12:46:31

Is that you Lisagran if so, you could go out in a bin bag and look fab, channelling your inner Melania Trump!
I of course look just like Christine Lagarde only not as tall, not as slim, not got the sharp haircut, or a whizz at evonomics - but I can do scarves!

oldbatty Tue 11-Dec-18 12:45:35

No J,I refuse to believe that. What are your good bits.

Jalima1108 Tue 11-Dec-18 12:42:24

I could wear all that lisagran and still look like a sack of oats.

Kim19 Tue 11-Dec-18 12:41:24

? to MB!

Gemmag Tue 11-Dec-18 12:28:09

HannahLL.........Love it, wear it with panache.
I will be wearing burgundy tights with black patent shoes with my short black skirt tchwink. Wish I was 5'9".

Lisagran Tue 11-Dec-18 12:27:59

oldbatty - some images for you. I think some style “tweaks” can make quite a difference to an outfit - like pushing sleeves up, wearing an oversized scarf....

MawBroon Tue 11-Dec-18 12:22:50

Fortunately we are all different, but feeling * good in yourself* and looking confident and self assured goes a long way.
Unless you can wear knee boots, I think trousers do look better certainly than flesh coloured tights or even dark because most of us now wear rather more “sensible” shoes than we used to. You can tuck them out of sight with trousers and jeans but not with skirts.
But if you have the legs for a skirt, go girl!

oldbatty Tue 11-Dec-18 12:17:50

Now then bijou, here is my dilemma, the rear end is encased in the black trews.

Bijou Tue 11-Dec-18 12:13:56

I do think a skirt is better for older women rather than the ubiquitous black trousers or jeans. I am sure that most don’t check their backsides in the mirror.
I likebright colours especially bright pink or turquoise. Just because it is winter one doesn’t have to wear dull colours.

MawBroon Tue 11-Dec-18 12:04:25

Result!
Thank you for giving me a little “push” , Kim19, I have not yet worn the duffle so contacted the store, explained and yes! I can return the navy one for a full refund and buy the pink one!
Admittedly after the Christmas excesses I may resemble a raspberry moose (deliberate spelling) but who cares, they’ll all see me coming! tchgrin

grandtanteJE65 Tue 11-Dec-18 11:56:46

IMO at any age, there are colours that suit us and those that don't, but we do have to check them occasionally, as what suited us when we were young, might just not suit us now. I remember my aunt suddenly started to wear pink and lilac after her hair had turned grey and they suited her very well, whereas when she was younger and had brown hair neither suited her.

If you feel good in certain clothes, you wear them with confidence which makes others think you look good too. You probably do: we are our own worst critics when we look in the mirror, or worse catch sight of ourselves in a shop window!

Maggiemaybe Tue 11-Dec-18 11:51:49

And I had some gorgeous stylish (for me) fuchsia pink leather gloves last year. Sadly I now only seem to have one. It could be something to do with the youngest DGS who was terrified of them and refused point blank to hold my shocking pink hand.

Nanny27 Tue 11-Dec-18 11:50:40

I love to see older people (men too) dressed a little outrageously. Far to many beige people out there. Btw, I'm sitting here in black tracksuit trousers and a grey T shirt but I have just been cleaning the oven. ??
