size 18 ish maybe? An older lady with shoulder length grey hair wearing, a pleated checked skirt ( mostly greys), knee length boots, a grey top with a checked woolen poncho, a soft grey beret and orange lipstick.

It looked brilliant.

I nip round the shop in my slippers sometimes. blush

Day6 Mon 10-Dec-18 23:36:11

I’m a size 12 and always look like a bag of slack

Oh gillybob, that made me laugh, but I bet you don't. I envy you your size.

Must admit*oldbatty*, older women who look chic and stylish do catch my eye. It looks so effortless. Some women have such style, without slavishly following fashion. They just know what to put together.

I as with relatives this last weekend, celebrating, and was complimented and told by several women that I looked lovely. That will keep me going for the next few months, ha ha, but normally I often hope no one will knock the door when I am having an at home slobbing out day! grin

I do have some French genes - perhaps I should string some onions round my neck too.

Jalima1108 Mon 10-Dec-18 23:19:41

It does have a bit of purple in it - it's good to wear purple grin

trisher Mon 10-Dec-18 23:16:32

If you can't look a bit mad when you are older then whenever can you? Don't ditch the beret Jalima1108 wear it and flaunt it. Otherwise you are in danger of slipping into the boring old lady in beige category. If I have to choose between 'a bit mad" and "bloody boring" I'd go for the mad every time. It's the wearing purple with a red hat scenario. Start now before it's too late! grin

Jalima1108 Mon 10-Dec-18 23:04:40

Sorry, but a beret always looks a bit mad on an older person IMHO.
Oh dear!
My friend knitted me one which I love.
It will now be passed to one of the DGD lemongrove

(see what I mean about never getting it right? grin)

GillT57 Mon 10-Dec-18 23:01:29

She sounds effortlessly stylish oldbatty and I envy her!. Some people (my late mother included) just have a way of owning it. I do try......but just don't quite manage it

lemongrove Mon 10-Dec-18 21:59:15

I think Columbo put me off beige raincoats for life!

lemongrove Mon 10-Dec-18 21:58:40

tchgrin

merlotgran Mon 10-Dec-18 21:52:53

Unlike the huddled masses in their beige raincoats.

That'll be me then grin

Lynne59 Mon 10-Dec-18 21:31:37

I'm a larger woman, at size 20, and I always wear bright colours and always have a full face of make-up on (though not overly done). I dye my hair a chestnut/plum shade.

I think if I'm big/fat, whatever, I won't by some miracle look slim if I wear black or baggy clothes, so I tend to wear colours I like - pinks, reds, purples, usually. I'm 59 and like to look feminine. I would never go outside without make-up on and small heels.

Some just have style. I don’t but then again I prefer to be warm and comfortable with generally no makeup and sensible shoes. Doesn’t matter what the season is, I’ve just given up being stressed about it.

MiniMoon Mon 10-Dec-18 20:53:25

I have no style!!! I need a makeover!!!
I've been looking for a long (full length) warm skirt. I don't want Tweed or jersey though.
I can't find anything even on eBay.

MissAdventure Mon 10-Dec-18 20:37:32

smile
I love people watching, and people like that are a breath of fresh air.

oldbatty Mon 10-Dec-18 20:30:07

Yes that was it paddyann. It was different and vibrant and she owned it. Unlike the huddled masses in their beige raincoats.

paddyann Mon 10-Dec-18 20:10:22

I love to see someone bucking the trend, there's no law that says everyone over 50 has to be frumpy and identical to each other.Grey hair can look fantastic and as for the length although my hair is dyed its way beyond my shoulders and I have no intention of cutting it anytime soon .My late mother used to say I was too old for long hair when I was in my 40's .She'd be apoplectic at it being long at 64 .

hdh74 Mon 10-Dec-18 20:08:01

Whatever I wear I look like a cube in a sack, as that's the shape I am. Ought to be able to pull spongebob I spose....

And I love it when people notice how nicely someone else is dressed. I really dislike the posts you see on a lot of sites, and in newspapers etc, which basically bash any woman for not looking like a style icon. In the words of the immortal thumper, 'if you can't say nuffin nice....' (grammatical errors forgiven for a good sentiment)

Baggs Mon 10-Dec-18 20:00:05

<Curtsies back> lightheartedly.

oldbatty Mon 10-Dec-18 19:54:07

ah well, there goes that light hearted bit of fun. I bow to your superior knowledge.

Baggs Mon 10-Dec-18 19:20:08

It depends how you wear it as well.

Baggs Mon 10-Dec-18 19:19:38

Not if it's a genuine Breton "Boina", lem.

Txapela if you're speaking Basque, MrB tells me.

oldbatty Mon 10-Dec-18 19:16:53

lemon, you are so right about the long hair and the beret. It can look awful. The beret was soft, angora maybe? It looked great.

Agree long grey hair, all wrong but not so for her. And the orange lipstick, just wow!

EllanVannin Mon 10-Dec-18 19:03:06

Bathsheba worry not because I'm clueless too. Though I say it myself, I've got the height, a size 12 a lot of hair with no style in it as it's that way to keep my head and neck warm much the same as my body is covered in thick jumpers thick tights and trousers because I'm such a cold creature.

Makeup, again I haven't got a clue and when I attempt it---------well, picture Bette Davis hahahaha. Or Lucille Ball if I really push the boat out and don mascara, though I've been known to resemble Alice Cooper if I've forgotten about having the mascara on. Humph ! I give up.

Just tell yourself there's no need to gild the lily !

Charleygirl5 Mon 10-Dec-18 18:58:59

I saw a woman on a tube a few months ago and she was also looking very stylish but what went through my mind was that she was a target for a robbery.

lemongrove Mon 10-Dec-18 18:56:55

Sorry, but a beret always looks a bit mad on an older person IMHO.
Ditto long grey hair.
The rest of the outfit sounds good though.
