Does anyone know the difference between facial Day creams and Night creams ,, do we need both ? Does the night cream only work at night with a special ingredient that won't work during the day ?, just wondering ,

Having spent 13 years living in Middle Eastern deserts, I do think a lot of it is down to how much sun you've been exposed to. It's certainly pretty obvious now, which of my ex-expat friends would lie in the sun, rather than sitting in the shade.
Although it was never possible to avoid it altogether, and there wasn't a lot in the way of moisturisers/sun creams available then, so we all show effects to some extent.

I've nearly always used Olay for daytime - I hate anything thick or greasy-feeling on my face, and Olay just sinks in. I do use something a mite heavier at night, though not fussy about brands.
Also need to moisturise arms and legs after every shower or bath, otherwise my skin feels horrible and I start to resemble some prehistoric scaly lizard. Lately I've started using up half a drawer-full of hand creams - all presents - for the purpose. They work a treat.

Paddyann I got sick of people telling me to cheer up when I developed marionette lines. Bit the bullet and had dermal fillers, love the result should have done it years ago!

It's down to genes, not creams, imo.

I remember once on TV where a dermatologist examined the skin of a woman who for very many years had only moisturised one half of her face (I don't remember the woman's reason for doing this, but I think it was curiosity)

The dermatologist concluded that although he could detect a very slight 'difference' in the skin on the two halves of the face, it wasn't one that indicated which half had been receiving the moisturiser. He couldn't tell.

I once told a friend I used Olay and she said "Oh does it work?"!

The trouble is you don't really know if it's worked or not as you don't know how many wrinkles you'd have without it.

I got Olay Total Effects as a Mother's day gift, so used it with relish in front of them . 2 hours later I was on anti-histamine - face still itchy and hot now ! Back to Bio oil for me !

Day creams usually has sun protection which are useful in day time. But if we talk about night creams which are heavier with moisturizing components and will not interfere with makeup you are applying.

My mum used Ponds cold cream and when using their vanishing cream dad used to tell her to put plenty on !

Ages ago one of the tv breakfast presenters mentioned Aqueous Cream. She remarked that you could use it as a facewash, as well as day or night moisturiser, and general all round skin softener. I've tried it and it works. Costs a fraction of the price of some others I could mention, and which have been mentioned on here.

It seems the presenter was told not to advertise cheaper alternatives for fear of steering people away from brand names.... [surprise]

I also find that a paste of bicarb and coconut oil used as a cleanser leave the skin lovely and soft all day.

Nivea for me creams and lotions. I use the blue tube for night and the white tub for day. The lotion for an all over body moisturiser.

My daughter bought me an expensive day cream for my birthday. No difference at all. Didn’t tell her that of course.

I've just started using astral after a thread discussing face creams a while ago.
I can't say I've noticed much improvement, but I just take my glasses off and have my own 'soft focus'.
It smells lovely, doesn't it?

rockgran Fri 11-Jan-19 19:15:46

Since I was a teenager it has been Astral by day and more astral at night if I could be bothered. I have always had a good complexion so never saw any reason to change it. I hope they never discontinue it!hmm

Grandmama I too read a good review in a magazine about this simple skincare at affordable prices - £1! It's been compared with No.7 having a lot of their ingredients. We have good genes i n our family - my mother always used Ponds creams and had lovely plump skin with few wrinkles. Now I'm an octogenarian and have had compliments about my skin. This anti-ageing range is named #6 from Poundland.

I agree face cremes are only as good as your genes ,but please remember meditations can be included in cremes and they are absorbed
Having said that I nearly always remove my makeup & receive many compliments on my skin .

i dont use any creams . but i do use suntan cream during the day whether its sunny or not ,and esp when its a cold north wind. been doing this since i was 18.... got nice soft face, and loads people say i dont look my age. (preen)!!!!! i am 61 yrs old.

Starbox you made me smile about 'the wealthy' resorting to facelifts. That hadn't crossed my mind before. I am brunette with average skin and used Ulay/Olay throughout my 20's & 30's - but I also sunbathed relentlessly without any additional skin protection. Now in my 70's I have no apparent wrinkles although, unlike Paddyann, I now have marionnette lines appearing beside my mouth despite being overweight. For many years now I have used a wide variety of face creams, especially Aldi's, but admit I'm grateful for my good genes.

annsixty Thu 10-Jan-19 19:15:44

I used the Aldi creams for some time but suddenly found that if I got any close to my eyes, it migrated and made them very sore indeed.
I have had no further trouble and I did like the creams at such a good price.

Grandmama Thu 10-Jan-19 19:11:27

Having read a good review in my local paper I bought a pot of day cream and a pot of night cream, both 50ml for £1 each from Poundland. Also a tube of serum for £1. The creams are just as good as my usual Olay.

I was in hospital a couple of years ago and the sister in charge kept saying that she couldn’t believe I was the age I was and what was my secret! I said “moisturise every day and a good husband”. This still applies! I don’t buy expensive moisturisers - I always used to use Boots Time Delay until,in their wisdom, they discontinued it and replaced it with Lyft, which I really don’t like. Boots have also upgraded their No7 creams, they are much more expensive, so I don’t buy them any more. I find the Aldi products vary a lot, depending on which one you use - some of them are very heavy, and some of them are lovely. The trouble is, I can never remember which is which. Now I just buy whatever is on offer anywhere and it seems to work OK as I haven’t suddenly turned into a wrinkled old crone!

travelsafar Thu 10-Jan-19 18:16:17

Aveeno for me, use it night and morning my skin feeels moist and fresh, plus of course a good diet and eating walnuts helps too

1974cookie Thu 10-Jan-19 17:45:10

Aldi do some great face creams etc and at a fraction of the price of the Famous brands. I am sure that if you compare the ingredients in both brands, you would find that they are very similar or indeed the same.

juneski Thu 10-Jan-19 17:12:03

I'm sure there is a difference between Night and Day Cream, I'm not sure what it is exactly, but night cream always seems heavier. I use Elemis. You can get cheaper, but I only buy it on offer, it lasts a lot longer than cheaper brands and it seems to suit my skin. I do follow a fairly simple routine of cleanse and moisturise. My best friend watches all the QVC ads which tell you to double (or even triple!) cleanse, use different types of serums, day creams and masks for this that and the other.... that all seems a bit of a con to me to make you buy more products.

Grannyanna12345 Thu 10-Jan-19 17:11:21

Like many of you I also use cheap moisturiser, but my skin improved so much when I was finally persuaded by my fitness-instructor daughter to drink plenty of water. Still don’t really enjoy it but it I’ve cultivated the habit.

winterwhite Thu 10-Jan-19 17:03:28

I notice a difference in feel-good factor.
I enjoy the common sense thrifty high ground when I buy basic / cheapest, but it says nothing to me when I put the stuff on. Whereas when I shop upmarket (usu Lancome or Clinique) I feel an ouch in my conscience as well as my purse, but putting it on somehow boosts my conception of myself.
First I've heard of complexion / wrinkles being influenced by heredity. So many of our own mothers and grandmothers would have been part of the lifelong-smoking generation that you'd think that would skew the conclusions.

Theoddbird Thu 10-Jan-19 15:46:40

I use a mid priced day and matching night cream but I buy in super drug or savers where it is cheaper. Coconut oil is good if you are younger with few lines. Just the solid stuff you buy for cooking. I do notice that the cream I use tightens up that saggy bit under my chin...
