Perfumes ( and aftershaves ) from our youth.

I always remember a bottle of Youth Dew on my sisters dressing table, plus my brother used Aramis. My dad used Old Spice. grin
As a teenager I used Charlie & Cachet - I even remember the magazine adverts for those!
But I look back most fondly on the little pots of cream perfume from Avon. I think I had every one.

What did you wear in your youth?

Tweed. Haven’t seen (or smelt) it for years but I’m sure if I did the scent would know I me for six

My first perfume was Gardenia by Goya in a tiny bottle - a birthday present from my Dad when I was 12. Later, I wore Dorothy Grey's Folie, which I loved and also Aqua Manda and Rubinstein's Courant which became my "signature" fragrance for a few years. (Allegedly, it's still available on eBay but I'm reluctant to part with £55 for something which may turn out to be a camel-pee rip off.)

I wore Manhattan. It was packaged in a tall slim bottle with black top that was supposed to look like a skyscraper. I saw a bottle in a museum and I could immediately remember the smell, how odd.

I wore Moon Drops (Revlon) and I'd do anything to get me hands on some again. It used to make husband swoon grin - for some reason it was really a good scent on me.

I've tried buying some on eBay but it was a vile knock-off.

I still wear 4711 occasionally. grin

I wonder if anyone else is old enough to remember June by Goya. I wore it when I was seventeen.

I used to wear 'Bond Street' by Yardley in my teens and thought I was so sophisticated. Now I prefer lighter flowery tones.
I think I have gone a bit nose blind in my old age so find it difficult to test perfumes on myself.

Oh I remember White Fire. I used to love Aquamanda too and also Musk oil. My MiL used Blue Grass all her life so we always bought her it for Christmas and my mum used 4711 when I was a child.

NanTheWiser Tue 09-Apr-19 16:56:02

As a 14 year old, I could just about afford a tiny bottle of "White Fire" from Woolies - it was all the rage at the time. A few years older, I was given "Gin Fizz" by Lubin for Christmas and Faberge's "Tigresse" both much loved.
Older still, and Youth Dew became a staple (wasn't it powerful!)
Also liked Je Reviens, and Blue Grass.
These days I mostly wear Dior and Chanel in various perfumes.
My mother used to wear Tweed, and Attar of Roses.

LullyDully Tue 09-Apr-19 16:38:57

I used to feel very sophisticated using Je Reviens until it brought me up in a neck rash that someone thought was a lovebite!

Just remembering Aqua Manda in the orange bottle. It smelt so fresh.

I used to use Dorothy Gray's 'Midnight'. I loved it, but they stopped making it. Also, Avon's 'Topaz'.

My first perfume was 'Tweed', which was purchased from a public lavatory in my area. They had a perfume machine with about four choices of perfume. For sixpence you could get a spray of your favourite. (Couldn't afford to buy a bottle then ...)

That seems so odd now. And have you noticed that, over the years, all the 'machines' have gone? Cigarettes, bubble-gum, chocolate - and, I think I'm right in saying, even the sanitary towel and durex machines in the ladies' loos have disappeared. (?) I suppose that today they would just get vandalised. Just shows you how much life has changed!

I went to an all girls’ school, and there was a popular fad at one time for wearing Brut! (Not me though, I hasten to add!)

Khan Tue 09-Apr-19 13:35:29

Dear Jane. I feel as if l had written the letter myself.
You named all the perfumes l had loved and used.
We have good taste .they are still very popular.

I remember most of these. Je Reviens, Youth Dew, Evening in Paris etc.
Hated Tweed it always smelled like cat pee on me.
My daughter won't use Body Shop Musk as it reminds her of morning sickness Teetime

Nannytopsy Tue 09-Apr-19 13:16:34

I loved Aquamanda. It was reissued a couple of years ago at Christmas but I didn’t get any!

Aqua Manda, Kiku , Blase', the original Charlie, Honesty and Ariane from Avon, Jontue, Dewberry from Body Shop, (wore that until it was discontinued).
The smell of Brut always takes me back to the summer of 1975 and one of my first boyfriends - wonder where he is and what he looks like now?

Anniebach Tue 09-Apr-19 10:38:02

Tweed

Squiffy Tue 09-Apr-19 10:30:33

My DM was given a bottle of Nina Ricci’s Capricci. She only liked using Yardley’s Lavender, so I used the Capricci! Beautiful scent and one of my favourites - all discontinued sad

Sortilege by Le Galion, also lovely, also discontinued.

Witzend Tue 09-Apr-19 10:17:29

Brut! I remember loving the smell of it on an older boyfriend when I was 19 or 20. Seemed so sophisticated then!

Roll on 10 years or so, and we were living in the Middle East with a dog who had a penchant for rolling in vile dead things on the nearby beach.
Once he found a dead turtle - the stench was unbelievable.
After several baths which didn't shift it, in desperation I bought some Brut shampoo and washed him in that - reasoning that one overpowering stink might mask the other.
It did help just a bit.

FountainPen Tue 09-Apr-19 10:16:03

Witzend. You can still buy Worth Je Reviens.

I remember my mother and I trying Occur from the Avon lady. It smelled good on her but foul on both of us. That was when I first realised that scents react differently on different skins. I see that was released in 1963. This site says it smells animalic. It certainly did on the two of us!

I'm still very much a perfume boffin to this day and must have had a fair amount of different ones over the years, so much so that I can pretty well name a perfume if someone passes by and I get a whiff of it.

Marilla Tue 09-Apr-19 10:06:44

I used to love L’air du Temp by Nina Ricci.
L’aimant was also a favourite.
