Sleeveless dresses

Maggiemaybe Thu 13-Jun-19 08:14:44

Like most of you, my lovely heels - all still here and looking at me reproachfully from their shelves, but they’re strictly special occasion only these days.

And I’m now looking anew at my sleeveless dresses. I didn’t think my upper arms were bad until DGS2 said the other day that I had bigger muscles than Grandad. grin He meant it as a compliment!

Halter-neck tops and dresses. I used to love those! Also backless dresses. (I grew up in a sunshine climate).

I am happy wearing what I wear now too. I have evolved. I haven't just stopped wearing things overnight.

What I do miss is eye makeup. My eyes are so sensitive now that it just smears.

I don't really miss anything that I used to wear and like the clothes that I have in my wardrobe – some sleeveless, some with straps, some with full-length sleeves, some skirts, dresses and pants knee length and some longer, some colourful and patterned clothes and some plainer and more restrained. I still wear high heels from time to time but am happiest barefoot.

Major abdominal surgery at the age of 21 left me with a belly resembling the London tube map and I did miss wearing a bikini when I was still a young woman. Further abdominal surgery some 20 years ago, plus the fact that 70 is looming means I have lost my desire to wear one.

What is nice is that absentdaughter quite often passes on some lovely fashionable clothes either because she has put on a little bit of weight or, more often, because she has bought a heap of new clothes and there is insufficient space in her large walk-in wardrobe.

Bikinis!!

I don't get the 'I mustn't wear sleeveless tops because of my flabby arms' concerns. My face is certainly nothing like it used to be, drooping eyelids, lines round my mouth beginning of marionette lines. But that doesn't mean I should cover it up, it is how I am and reflects my life. There is nothing obscene about upper arms.

However I do struggle with showing cleavage, simply because displaying cleavage is seen as showing off your assets, and I don't think a wrinkled decolletage is an asset to be admired, so I suppose I am not being consistent.

I can't wear high heels anymore, it is just too painful, but I never wore really high ones anyway. I can't get away with full skirts any more either, they don't go with middle aged spread!

Luckylegs Wed 12-Jun-19 22:36:26

I still miss short tight skirts, loved ‘em!

High heels! I can go from the car to say a restaurant in them or to a special event, but not if I have to stand around all evening in them, comfort is everything these days, I've become very attached to FitFlop as a brand. I always wore high heels to work, not quite the vertiginous type beloved by the likes of Victoria Beckham, but highish. Women are so much more sensible these days they don't risk their ankles on escalators and the like, lots of trainers to and from work and the high heels are no doubt stashed away in the office somewhere, or maybe they don't wear them at all. Good for them!

TBH there is nothing I miss wearing. My tastes have simply changed with age and I’m quite happy where I am at. I go for classic design, nothing flashy, natural fabrics and pay as much as I can afford. I keep my clothes for ever. I washed a cashmere sweater today that I’ve been wearing and I bought it to wear on chilly nights in Cornwall with the GC when we took them on holiday. That was at least 10 years ago.

Strappy tops, stilettos and mini skirts - usually all at the same time!

JackyB Wed 12-Jun-19 20:53:08

I was never slim when I was younger, although I was slimmer than I am now. I don't miss high heels, was glad to wear flatties and never went back after my first pregnancy.

I never had the figure for a bikini and have never owned one.

I don't miss sleeveless blouses, shorts or short skirts.

Wish I could still wear mascara to some decent effect, though. My eyelashes are very sparse.

Dora thank you

The funny thing is that when I was a teenager I wore Wrangler jeans and t shirts. Now I am 60 plus and I'm wearing...... Wrangler jeans and a t-shirt! I'm still the same!

Framilode Wed 12-Jun-19 19:06:19

I saw a fabulous trapeze style mini dress in monsoon. I would have looked great in it at 20 but at 72 - No.

It just made me remember how great it was to be young and slim.

dragonfly46 Wed 12-Jun-19 19:06:06

Mini skirts!

DoraMarr Wed 12-Jun-19 19:02:56

Sara65 Wed 12-Jun-19 19:01:42

SisterAct

SisterAct Wed 12-Jun-19 19:00:00

? heels. Size 10, 12 or 14 clothes !!!!

Sara65 Wed 12-Jun-19 18:41:27

Agree with you all about upper arms, and the shortage of short sleeved dresses

This year I have bought a couple of very fine wool ponchos, they work quite well

suziewoozie Wed 12-Jun-19 18:30:28

Atqui I bought this last year from Marks. I wear it with red shoes to match the stripe - it’s very comfy but I plan my loo visits carefully

BBbevan Wed 12-Jun-19 18:30:15

Most of us have mentioned sleeveless tops and I agree with that. Also strappy or strapless evening dresses.

Atqui Wed 12-Jun-19 18:21:48

I like the idea of a jump suit but wouldn’t be able to get it off in time to go to the loo even if I was slim enough to wear one!!

tinaf1 Wed 12-Jun-19 18:17:34

Sleeveless dress I too don’t like my flabby arms ☹️ High heels bought some low heeled hotter shoes but miss my stiletto heels

TwiceAsNice Wed 12-Jun-19 17:37:06

I can’t manage very high heels otherwise I wear what I like

EllanVannin Wed 12-Jun-19 16:50:34

I've never had much flesh on my body anyway so there was nothing to sag. Nothing wrong with my arms really only that I'm so nesh that they're permanently covered up in case a breeze blows. I've always been the same for as far back as I can remember.
Even in my younger years I never felt " right " wearing casual clothes ? Abroad, I'd wear a chiffon long-sleeved top/jacket. I remember having a lovely safari suit that went everywhere with me.

I'd like to wear the heels that I had, but that's out of the question now as I'd probably look like Dick Emery from behind, besides, they'd cripple me.

Gonegirl, wish I could run too ( though I don't know why or from what ) or even dash around like I used to do.
I've never owned a pair of jeans.

Last time I wore a bathing costume was 10 years ago when I was 69---only because where I was staying it was a private pool and I was with friends who I knew/know.
