Hairdresser!!!! Wavy Curly thick hair

I count myself lucky. My friend cuts mine in the kitchen every 4 weeks. She cuts to the curl and apart from washing, I never need to do anything with it. It just sorts itself out into curls. I never ever use a hairdryer of any description as that guarantees frizz.

Needless to say I spent years straightening it when younger! ?

He cut it OK last time although he seemed a bit bored

sodapop and Callistemon I wonder whether they get bored after the first cut, or maybe it’s a a way to get rid of you. I was going to an “award winning hairdresser” and all was going well, then after 2 or 3 cuts I noticed that my hair was shorter on one side - I told him and he said it was my fault for moving my head!! So I didn’t bother to go back.

Yes, why is it a hairdresser can cut it beautifully once, then make a mess of it another time!

My husband has really thick curly hair and hairdressers regularly make a mess of it then they dry it so it looks like an old womans perm!!!Like me the first thing he does is wash it when he gets home and I dry it for him with a diffuser .My daughter has her fathers hair she keeps hers very long and with the fabulous curls it always looks great.Try growing yours to shoulder length and see if that helps

Sealife and Gramaretto I’m glad you’ve found a way of managing your hair Soadapop I’m sorry about your hair and I know I’m lucky to have such thick hair- I just wish it didn’t look like worzel gummidges aunt sally ?most of the time.
Writing this post has spurred me to look again for a hairdresser who can work with my kind of hair. Fingers crossed, I might have found one - I googled hairdresser for curly hair and my nearest city and have found one who specialises in cutting, among other types, curly/wavy hair. I rang her up and she sounded lovely and knew what I was talking about when I explained it to her I’ve an appointment in a few weeks time - so I’ll report back. If anyone is interested in her contact details I’m in a the East Midlands.

It's always hit and miss with me and hairdressers too. Like you I have thick, coarse hair with a kink rather than curls.
At last, touch wood, I have found a local man whose own hair is very similar!
Maybe that's the secret.
He opened a salon near us a couple of years ago after training in salons in the city.
But really we should be so grateful for our luxuriant locks. So many older people thin on top, especially men.

I have similar hair to you, and I have given up straightening it. I have struggled to find a good cut too, as it can go so frizzy and bushy. I have so many hair products I have tried, that didn't live up to their promise.

I now have an angled bob, it is cut in at nape of neck with some longish layers at back, so has good shape at back of head. The front is angled down to my chin. She did thin the sides a little with a layer or two. I have a side fringe.

When it's partly dry, I blast it with dryer with my head upside down. It dries wavy, but at least it is a recognisable cut so not such a bush, so I am fairly happy with it. I use L'Oreal Elvive hair oil or Aussie Miracle Shine Leave in Conditioner Spray. Very short hair is hard work for me, I like this option.

I wish I was in your position Aglassofroseplease what I wouldn't give for thick wavy hair. Mine is straight and very thin, no amount of good shampoo or conditioner helps. You are very lucky.

I’m glad there’s others in a situation although I know I’m lucky to have such thick hair - even my mum at 93 has a good head of hair.

I constantly feel like my hair is work in progress either growing out a too short cut or a bad hair cut or wondering why it won't sit right once I've washed it a few days after a cut.

I don't know if its me, or my hair that's the problem - maybe I'm not clear enough with the hairdressers about what I want, I don't know.

I've now got to the point that I'm scared of trying out a new hairdresser. I read recommendations on Facebook, I ask friends, etc but I convince myself they won’t be any good and I’ll end up with another bad cut. I've made and cancelled loads of hair appointment as I've got cold feet. I'm worried I'm getting a phobia of hairdressers ?

I have thick curly wayward hair too. My hairdresser a very experienced older lady gets it just right. I know that my hair will stick up if razors or thinning scissors are used on it and it needs an oil before blow drying to make it manageable. I use Elvive Extraordinary Oil. I do give it a light going over with the straighteners sometimes but when the weather is damp that's it back to curly wirly.

I've found a hairdresser who will cut my hair exactly as I want it, and when works in the Salon at the bottom of the hill. It takes me about 5-10 minutes to walk there. ?
I only ever have a dry trim, but this young lady listens, and cuts it exactly as I describe.

Aglass Have you ever thought of finding a salon which specialises in cutting Afro hair they are the most remarkable stylists you will find my DDs African friend goes to one in Liverpool and her hair always looks terrific.
I have trouble even finding a stylist who can cut straight never mind anything else all I ask for is a trim every couple of months, my hair is long down my back and I wear it up in a scrunchie or big clip but finding someone to trim it straight is a big issue

The only decent " cutter " of thick wavy/curly hair was in Australia when I had my hair done there in 1994. It was like wild mint and half the time I couldn't get the brush through it.
However, it was trimmed/thinned beautifully and a triple colour was then put on in streaks, blonde, copper and a goldy colour-----not gaudy just a noticeable touch.

Sadly nothing ever lived up to that expertise here and I just gave up. It has thinned over the years but I suppose for my age I still have a decent head of hair, but won't get it cut as I don't like following the " norm ".

I think you are right. My hair has always been a bit like yours and it's no good trying to get it to do what it doesn't want to do - which is go straight.
It took me a while but you have to 'go with the curl' unless you want to get it thinned. OTOH be grateful to have lots of hair. Our thin haired sisters have a terrible time too.
Would a choppy pixie cut flatter? Fairly easy to look after.
