I asked my ex, while we were on honeymoon if he thought I looked pretty or beautiful on our wedding day - his reply was "No, but the dress was nice" !!!

Oh jaylucy, I’m sure you looked lovely! A friend of mine had an arranged marriage and they hadn’t seen each other before the actual day. Apparently her husband did an obvious doubletake when she lifted her veil. When she asked him about it, years later, he said he thought she was a man! Oddly enough they’ve had a long and very happy marriage.

I got married in 1970.
I wore a black Indian embroidered long dress and matching headband.
I wasn’t at all conventional.

Thank you heavensjoy, yes the fabric is thin silk and the lining even thinner silk. I have a friend who is a dressmaker, she sewed the dress.

If any of you know someone who might want a dress like it, the pattern is from Neue Mode Stil nr. V22175, with both a short-sleeved version and a suggestion that the bodice could be lace fabric.

1972. My dad kept it in his loft until he died then it came toour loft and it's still there.

There was not much variety in wedding dresses where I lived so would have meant long distance to the bigger shops. On asking H, hoping that my efforts and limited choice would have brought a 'you looked beautiful' what I did receive was 'the brides maids dresses were nice' The brides maids dresses had been made by our local dressmaker.

DD was married 27 years ago and her choice of dress was way different to mine. She was in a rock band at the time, hence the huge hair.

The dresses made by mother in law

I got married in a hot pants suit!! I was a size 8 or 10. Back then. And sandals that laced up to the knee ! Height of fashion at the time. I wish I could find a photo... ?

Looking back at the wedding photographs not impressed with my choice.I did however sell it just a short time later as our next door neighbours daughter found she was pregnant so it was to be a rush job! before her bump became obvious.
She took the veil and headdress too.

I wore my sister’s wedding dress, just needed slight adjustment, she married 6 years before me. Artificial bouquet, both of us used to have bad hay fever. We’ve been married 37 years

When my ex and I split up, he(for some reason best known to him) kept our wedding album! Considering it was full of photos of people he didn't know (my large family - his, apart from his sister, BiL and stepfather were all in Australia)
I bought my dress from Laura Ashley in Covent Garden - it was £50 in the sale and was a seersucker type cotton, Victorian in style with a high neck, a frill from the shoulder to the waist, with a sash, leg'o' mutton sleeves and I loved it - the only one I ever actually tried on!

Mine was Victorian style, with long sleeves and high neck. This was the style in the seventies but I wish I'd bought something that showed the tiny waist I had in those days.

Do people still give those black cats on a ribbon to brides these days? I must try and find one for GD to give her uncle next month.

I hated the "meringue" dresses of the early 80s so bought mine in the Debenhams sale meaning to wear it again....never did!
MIL crocheted the shawl and a friend of Mum's made the headband.... I still have those.

Maggiemaybe yes I remember those photos mine was in a brandy glass, 1978 that was, still have the photos but thankfully not the husband ?

It was January 2nd and snow on the ground. The dress was velvet so I was warm but I’m not sure how the guests were feeling!

Mine was made by my mother in law,Who also made the maid of honour dress,bridesmaids dresses and pageboy outfits,I bought the material from Debenhams and got staff discount,as I worked there at the time,married in 1976 at the end of the heatwave

Me in 1985 when I still had plenty hair! Made my own dress and was still sewing the flowers on and stitching the hem the night before, after the rehearsal! Marriage lasted almost 19 years but divorced now.

I got married in short white lace dress along with white ankle boots and bonnet. This was in 1966 so strongly influenced by Mary Quant! I'll post a picture when I've found it and worked out how to do it!

This is a lovely post. Beautiful photos especially the one from 1912, which was the year after my Granny's wedding. No photo from then, so loved seeing what was the style. Still figuring out how to post a photo here.

I was married in 1946. Still needed clothing coupons then so just wore an ordinary turquoise dress for the quick register office wedding. Both hard up as we had both been in the Forces. Very happy marriage for forty three years until he sadly died.
