My DD is a very kind and generous girl, and has just given me an extraordinarily expensive jar of face cream.
It pretty much promises to restore my old face to its teenage brightness, but I have my doubts!
It’s very nice, and smells lovely, and there’s no doubt that the beautiful jar makes a statement sitting on my dressing table, but is it worth spending the price of a week’s groceries on 30ml of face cream?
I’m 71, a lifelong user of good old Nivea, and tho’ I say it myself, I have less wrinkles than average. Therefore, although I accept my daughter’s loving gesture with immense gratitude, I probably shan’t stick to this expensive stuff!
What do other Gransnetters think - is it with spending a fortune on skin care, or shall we stick with the well-known everyday brands we were brought up with?

Love that one Lemongrove!

Daisymae Sun 11-Aug-19 16:39:44

Well if you use it every day, you will be able to see if there's any difference. I use loccitane serum and no. 7 moisturizer as it has a sunscreen too. I have always understood that the sun is the most damaging factor when it comes to ageing. Plus of course you need to protect against melanoma.

Jane10...happily I can enlighten you, as I have been reliably informed that micellar water is from mice urine, and the mice are kept in a cellar, free range, so no cruelty involved.?
( this is not fake news.) wink

I also use Elemis paddyann after buying a mag with a little freebie which was the SOS cream (15ml) which lasted forever and was great for the odd blemish etc.

Have since treated myself to other unguents but I only buy in the sales at Xmas and when they, or Debenhams, do special offers as it is on the dear side. However the products last a lot longer than some of the cheaper stuff I buy as you only need a 5p dot rather than a dollop!

I've used the blue tub Nivea every day since my teens. I'm told I don't look my age. ( unless they're fibbing) smile

Good old Oil of Ulay (Olay) for me. I've used it for as long as I can remember and my face is fairly wrinkle free at 70.

Luckygirl Sun 11-Aug-19 13:43:33

DD goes in for expensive toiletries etc. She does not buy them for me any more as she has worked out that I am a lost cause!

I use Garnier face cream and only buy it when Tesco online has it at half price, which it does regularly.

paddyann Sun 11-Aug-19 13:32:49

I use Elemis ,the serums and creams the cleansers and toners the bath stuff and body lotions .Its not cheap but I like it ,my skin is very good ( for 65) and I like the ritual of a double cleanse routine at night .Its my wee treat to me .My late mother was always image conscious so its been passed down...or indoctrinated

My daughter get a deal or a knock off? Yer ‘avin a larf, incha?
She loves expense, always has, and will go without rather than buy what she perceives as ‘poor quality’.
She’s also generous to a fault, so I can’t be cross with her.
My dear mother was the same, always bought the most expensive thing she possibly could.
It’s funny, because we’re a family who have known and struggled through times of hardship.
I guess my late mother and now DD felt the need to kick back after spells of managing on very little. I like to enjoy what money I have, but would rather buy nice things for my children and DGC than spend it on my old carcass!

Hey a placebo is absolutely fine. If it makes someone feel better then why not?
Since I stopped washing my face in soap and water and now use micellar water to wipe it, I now find I don't have to use much moisturiser at all. God knows what micellar water is but it's cheap and seems to be very good for my huge fat face.

GrannyGravy13 Sun 11-Aug-19 12:34:51

Use it and enjoy it sluttygran.........because "you are worth it".

lilypollen Sun 11-Aug-19 12:33:37

Keep the pot and put your Nivea in it.

lemongrove Sun 11-Aug-19 12:25:58

No, it isn’t worth it ( spending a lot) any old moisturiser will do, anything else is a placebo effect.

lemongrove Sun 11-Aug-19 12:24:28

Good idea!

Pantglas1 Sun 11-Aug-19 12:22:06

Use it up and then keep the posh pot for earrings etc

GagaJo Sun 11-Aug-19 11:39:55

At 54 I suppose I should be taking care of my skin. But to be honest, after a day of teaching and bath/bedtime with darling grandson, my face is lucky to have the makeup taken off with a baby wipe.

quizqueen Sun 11-Aug-19 11:36:16

She may have got a great deal on it, you don't know. My daughter sometimes buys me more expensive face cream for Christmas etc. but buys cheaper for herself. I too then revert to the good old Nivea after use, which I do actually prefer to Avon etc.

Alima Sun 11-Aug-19 11:33:57

Any chance it could be knock off slutty? (A term I am familiar with after watching too much Brookside many moons ago).

glammanana Sun 11-Aug-19 11:33:55

How thoughtful of your DD I would use the cream as a treet and use it say once a week until it is used up then have the wonderful pot on your dresser.
I can't use any expensive creams and can only use "Simple" products its ideal for my needs and keeps my skin wrinkle free.

SparklyGrandma Sun 11-Aug-19 11:29:33

Nivea is great and I have used it for years sluttygran I use their lovely day moisturiser £4.10!

tanith Sun 11-Aug-19 11:24:54

I recently thought I’d try an expensive face cream I was very diligent and followed the instructions daily till I’d used the pot and the result was absolutely no difference at all
so it’s back to my usual Olay daily moisturiser.

Ngaio1 Sun 11-Aug-19 11:22:33

I would use the super one and enjoy! After that, you may be able to see if it has made a difference. I love some luxury in my life.

Jane10 Sun 11-Aug-19 11:11:31

It was a very kind gesture by your DD. I think you should use up then go back to your trusty old Nivea. No need to tell her when you've run out of the expensive stuff.

MissAdventure Sun 11-Aug-19 11:09:42

Up until a few years ago, dermatologists stated that all that was needed was moisturiser, and nothing else.

I don't know if that has changed now, as I'm not overly interested these days, but the thought was that cream can only lay on the top of your skin, not alter what goes on beneath it.

Minniemoo Sun 11-Aug-19 11:09:16

I have a few and I've indulged in expensive shampoos and 'masks' and whatnot. Don't think there's a huge amount of difference apart from the smell. And the expensive ones do tend to smell much nicer
