What counts as “old lady clothes” nowadays?

I need the brilliance and sharp eyes of Gransnet! As I approach Birthday No..
61 , I worry more about dressing like an ”old lady”.
I’m aware that many clothing choices that look normal to me look old fashioned to my daughters.
It was ages before I realised my jeans were the “Wrong” length for example.
Is there anyone here with a keener fashion sense than mine who has a list of no-go looks that scream “EIGHTIES”?

I am between sizes in Hotter shoes. Unfortunately. Fit flops for me. (Including lace-up flats shock)

Gonegirl Sat 07-Sept-19 15:25:26

Can you still buy them?! ((Rubs hands excitedly))

Oldandverygrey Sat 07-Sept-19 15:24:27

Not much hope for me, not only do I wear Hotter shoes, but I also wear the granny pinnies as well.

But fleeces are so warm! I have got a lightweight Jack Wolkskin one on at the moment. Black with a fuschia zip.

Below knee floral shirtwaister dresses are the height of fashion this autumn and are worn with chunky white trainers. Comfort and style.
I don't rule out elasticated waists as long as they aren't visible.
Just no beige or fleeces!

I have been wearing cotton traders shorts all the summer.

Sad that shorts weather is finished. sad

merlotgran Sat 07-Sept-19 15:11:51

Nothing wrong with Cotton Traders. Their sizing is reliable

trisher Sat 07-Sept-19 15:09:01

Well today I have got skinny jeans on but I bought a pair of wide legged culottes this summer and I think they are the coming thing. I love them because they have pockets and they are cooler when it's hot. I'm beginning to worry that my skinny jeans may be on the way out and I don't want to be still wearing them if they are old hat. I think you have to keep watching yoonger people.

midgey Sat 07-Sept-19 15:08:49

What ever they are I am probably wearing them! grin

Poppyred Sat 07-Sept-19 14:58:12

Anything by Damart and Cotton Traders ??

MissAdventure Sat 07-Sept-19 14:57:25

I wonder who decides these things?
Is there a panel of experts in old ladyism who have weekly meetings, with charts and graphs to study old lady stuff?

M0nica Sat 07-Sept-19 14:43:39

Millie22 spot on, especially the remarks about M&S

Millie22 Sat 07-Sept-19 14:35:17

Basically anything from marks and spencer except knickers
Lace up flat shoes
Coats and jackets that always look too big

merlotgran Sat 07-Sept-19 14:33:57

My granny used to wear those pinnies as well. Her long hair was always in a hairnet indoors and a smart bun if she went out.

She looked just like Grandma Walton grin

I wear beige because it suits me but never ever with pale colours. Usually with black or very dark brown.

MOnica is right. I've lost my way a bit, clothes wise. So I've started looking at other people, YOUNGER. people my size who look good. I clearly go for 'alternative' but I've had some good ideas. Done nothing about them yet, because it'd involved 2 things I don't like doing. 1) Shopping. 2) Spending money.

Gonegirl Sat 07-Sept-19 14:22:42

Can you still get those pinnies that went right over your clothes, sleeveless, and crossed across at the front. My granny used to wear them.

MissAdventure Sat 07-Sept-19 14:22:00

Listen to Maya reciting her poem. smile

Those cable knit cardies with enormous buttons look like 'old lady clothes' IMHO.

There's more - sensible sturdy lace-up shoes worn with a tweed skirt and thick stockings.

Anoraks

MissAdventure Sat 07-Sept-19 14:15:44

I don't know what old women's clothes are, and luckily for me I don't care. smile

Marilla Sat 07-Sept-19 14:14:35

M0nica, what a fantastic poem! ?

Gonegirl Sat 07-Sept-19 14:06:53

Lessismore, position a mirror somewhere in your house that makes it really flattering, and only look in it. It's what I do.

M0nica Sat 07-Sept-19 14:06:09

LIM read the post above yours.

Lessismore Sat 07-Sept-19 14:04:53

I hate my appearance.

M0nica Sat 07-Sept-19 14:02:52

Lessismore Do not be so foolish. Bigger ladies can and do look stunning. Look around you there are lots of really stylish larger ladies in supermarkets and generally going about their business. Anybody any size any age can look good

As Maya Angelou says in her poem Phenomenal Woman www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/48985/phenomenal-woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I’m not cute or built to suit a fashion model’s size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I’m telling lies.
I say,
It’s in the reach of my arms,
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I’m a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That’s me.

There are 4 verses. I have given you the link.

Read the poem, all of it, then memorise it and each morning, as soon as you get up, you look in the mirror and say Maya's poem out loud so that you never agaim need to write: No idea what to wear. I look awful. 2/3 stone weight gain, I better just accept it and dress accordingly
