Making Face Masks

fevertree I've got a few of those tray cloths and table cloths that were embroidered by an aunt, many years ago. They just sit in a cupboard but yours is a great way of using them!

Clever, MiniMoon! I never got the hang of crochet but my mother was an accomplished tailoress and she taught my older sister and me. My younger sister was more interested in riding horses so she never learned.

I've made some out of old (vintage) embroidered traycloths. Very happy with my masks, made from a very simple pattern: a circle (I used a dinner plate as guide) cut into quarters, sew together the rounded sides on two pieces, then right of the two halves sides together etc.

Here's my crocheted mask, complete with filter pocket. I made it with some leftover acrylic yarn. It might be a bit warm for the summer, but I'll only be using it in enclosed spaces. I have a white cloth one for walking about in the street, if it ever comes to being needed.

PamelaJ1 I've made some for men too. I have two sons and a son-in-law. I made one as a thank-you for a friend of my son, who nominated me for three free Hello Fresh meals (automatic subscription duly cancelled!) and I'm busy with one for my karate instructor. They mostly request plain black with no lace or daisy trim! Can't think why... ?

FarNorth I iron them, principally, because ironing is important when you're sewing things. But the heat of the iron is also a brilliant way of killing germs.

lizzy and vegansrock , yours are so pretty. Mine are a little scary but they are for men. I have made others in the fabric I had left over from the kitchen blinds. I expect the liberty ones are light to wear.

I’ve made loads of masks in Liberty tana lawn , which is very light and very fine weave, lovely designs. I’ve made nearly £600 for charity making them for friends and neighbours. I do the pleated sort and the shaped ones. Plus still making scrubs.

Iron them?? I wasn't counting on doing that.
I iron almost nothing - where is my iron anyway??

I was happy to pay a few pounds to someone who is skilled enough to make masks.
I don't think it works out to a high hourly rate for her.

I used a sort of printed fish wind sock??‍♀️ that I bought years ago. I knew it was a good idea?

There are loads of tutorials on YouTube and many of them are for people without a sewing machine. I made the pictured masks for my daughter out of a tube scarf that I never wore. She wanted blue but not baby blue. They are not difficult to make, although I used a machine. Grammaretto Yes, you need a few so you can wash, dry and iron them.

Better get sewing everyone as it sounds as if they are going to be made compulsory in shops.

I admire your efforts, I'm no good with a needle and thread, I've just ordered 3 on line from Gap in attractive prints, that can be washed, to ring the changes from the utilitarian disposable ones I have at the moment. The mark up for scraps of material must he immense, never mind we need to spend our money on something. I find myself increasingly on line looking for masks these days, who'd have thought it a year ago

Yes, me too, some plain and some "novelty". Have given some to our GP surgery, who offer them to patients. There is also a local group who collects them to give to schools. That is apart from me giving them to family members.

Wow!! well done. I have made 6 now for family members and moi but we will need to keep washing them I suppose.
It is compulsory now in shops in Scotland.
So at least I won't be the only one any more.
I have hardly been inside a shop since March. Maybe 6 times altogether. I was a bit hopeless as I didn't notice the one-way system.
I have ordered mor elastic online but it probably won't arrive for months.

I made them too, also sewed scrubs for a local Care Home. I've stopped now as they seem to be well stocked with professional PPE and my hands were playing up anyway. (carpal tunnel).
