Winter coats/jackets

I’ve got several coats I’m afraid. A lovely long warm, belted coat for going out posh places, a short puffy jacket and a longer one, a red waterproof-ish coat bought in a leading supermarket sale for about £12 several years ago and always get compliments when I wear it, a lovely trench coat again bought in a sale last year but hardly ever worn due to Covid and not going out! I’ve also got a Peter storm waterproof.

One of my regrets is never buying a quality camel coat. I always thought they looked wonderful on long willowy types and I'm a non willowy shortie! Considered a short coat or jacket but always felt like a compromise too far. Guess I'll never find out now. Lost the interest but not the admiration.

I had a beautiful cashmere Jaegar one years ago. The damn moths got it. Since then I've had a MaxMara one (I think they still do the best ones) but I've since decided it's too grown-up for me and I currently have a luscious fake fur one from Zara.

My oldest coat still in use was bought as a first Christmas present by my DH 35 years ago from C&A. It’s a black knee length swing style with a hood, and royal blue lining designed to show when not fully buttoned,
A green waterproof calf length coat purchased at a country fair about 20 years ago keeps me dry in most weathers, but I take an all encompassing cape when visiting the Lake District just in case!
I’ve also a more recently purchased tan faux suede zip up jacket with a fleece lining to keep me warm when it turns chilly but want to look smart.

I just checked and I have a lot of coats.
4 raincoats, 1 polar fleece jacket, 2 black and 1 navy anoraks
1 smart black 3/4 length coat, 1 black+white herringbone
smart jacket
and 1 full length burgundy smart coat. Quite a few hats too.

There is a saying that there is no bad weather, just bad choice of clothing and I think my coat closet covers all eventualities.

Not quiet as many coats/jackets/wraps etc as I have boots..........

I'm hard on coats and don't like cumbersome coats that need to be wrestled with or dry cleaned, just tough enough to last-I prefer to dress in layers- Can't stand anything that inhibits movement- My oldest is a denim jacket-

I have a long black padded coat which is quite stylish, most of my friends have one now as they are so useful and can go anywhere. I have a Landsend waterproof coat for dog walking, long mac and various others. In one for keeping old coats for gardening but in reality you only need one! I won't buy anything now with a fur trim or down filled now I know how they get it.

My favourite is my Landsend down filled jacket with a big hood I have to be careful wearing it though as it is cream and shows every mark.
I have an old Barber coat which is about 20yrs old used for wet weather and walking my dog a red 3/4 coat from M&S in a classic style to brighten up dark days.
Far too many jackets to mention its embarressing really how many I have I must downsize in the New Year.

I live and dog walk in my puffa Joules coat with a fur edged hood but treated myself to this smart “big coat” last winter when I had three funerals to go to
This year I bought a blue and green tartan wool cape which is easy to wear over chunky knits or jackets and it is nice to get out of the dog walking coat occasionally!

I have a long, black swing style mac ( with a printed jazzy lining) - 5 years old.

A black wool heavy coat with a detachable fur collar for really cold days with a black matching fur trimmed hat - 6 or 7 years old.

I have a mid weight, long M&S black coat, with a printed zebra pattered lining - 9 years old. I wore it yesterday with a purple scarf and purple gloves.

2 M&S macs in cream and beige for the summer months, which I can dress up a bit with a scarf.
A mid thigh waterproof hooded jacket for walking in the rain.

Nothing jazzy or exciting... mostly classic and in a narrow colour palette. I have to rely on scarves, hats and brooches to lend a bit of colour.

I do love a nice coat and buy one every few years in the sales at Hobbs. I have a lovely big puffa type one of theirs for really cold, wet days; a nice black wool and cashmere full length one for looking smart/businesslike and a shorter wine coloured one for wearing with jeans. I'll be looking at this years sales - I usually buy one in the summer months.

I have quite a few, I can’t resist them. My long-standing favourite is a Musto quilted belted jacket, it’s red so warm and cheerful on dark miserable days for dog walking - it’s probably about 8 years old. My very oldest is also a Musto jacket, lighter weight, belted, it still looks really good after multiple washes, and is about 12 years old I think. Last winter I got a navy wool smart jacket in Joules sale, and I’ve just bought a fleece lined waterproof one for the rainy cold days. I must have about 10 in total, and love them all!

All of my coats are old, Navy wool, Camel wool, dark brown with fake fur collar, black with velvet collar, a couple of Summer macs, blazers, fleeces and a waxed jacket for dog walking.
So at the moment it’s my waxed jacket and a fleece that get worn every week as apart from dog walking or a brief trip in the car I don’t go anywhere.

An embarrassing amount?.
However one Barbour mackintosh that’s 20 years old and a brilliant waterproof Gortex walking jacket that was £7 in a charity shop.
I tend to buy quality classics and keep them a long time.

But my latest acquisition is a pale blue velour coat from M&S, a bargain at £40.

I hated coats for years and years then fell in love with them.

My current favourite is a Seasalt, blue, loose weave one or a Seasalt midweight waterproof. I have a couple of really warm Lands End 'big' coats and a good black coat, a couple of coatigans and I think I'll stop there!

I ve got a parka for on my cycle lovely big hood and warm as a duvet ( always had parkas or duffles) and then a really stylish River Island coat from the charity shop for £8 which I love and use as my best coat I really like that one, when I say best I mean for everything apart from cycling and work I don’t mean put away for a special occasion I don’t have one of them because I don’t really have special occasions ?

I bought a Jack Murphy riding coat when we got our first horse. I have worn it almost daily for 17 years. The zip is going now but it definitely doesn't owe me anything.

I tend to buy lightweight jackets as I can add layers under them as I please. I don't like to feel or look too bulky in padded jackets. Olive green or navy are my favoured colours.

My best coat is a long charcoal Windsmoor wool coat, about 15 years old. Very rarely worn, but it will come out tomorrow for a funeral.

I have a black wool long jacket I’ve had for years comes out for funerals, and a blue and rust check wool coat for going out I bought in a sale.

Kim19, a camel coat never goes out of style. You should be able to find one that suits you, then you will feel stylish every winter. Mind you, actual camel wool is very expensive, so definitely an investment.

I always favoured the duffle coat style with the toggle buttons but have never had one.

I wear a Joules type padded jacket, a birthday present from DS and family a couple of years ago, also have a suede type duffle coat I bought in a factory sale many years ago, oh and a camel suede effect fake fur-lined ‘best’ coat that I hardly ever wear.

For hanging out the washing and being in the garden, I have a very old and shabby tartan padded jacket. The lining of one sleeve is all ripped and my arm often goes in the wrong area when putting it on. But I still keep hanging on to it.

As you can tell, I don’t dash out at the start of each winter and buy a new coat.

I have a dark green Peter Storm coat with a fur lined hood and quilted lining for really cold days, it is full length so keeps my neither regions warm on the coldest days.

I also have a light weight coat which is shower proof, althought the hood on it is useless!!!

There is a burgundy coloured jacket for warmer days and i have a couple of fleeces too.

One is so old i cant remember how long i have had it, use to use when walking my dog and she has been gone over 7 years now, i use it when working the garden on chilly days.

I have a 'good' black coat for special occasions.

Every winter I get one, the latest I regret as it has fur all round the collar and so it has to be dry to wear it, plus I feel very large in it.

My dog walking wet weather gear. So rain jacket with hood and waterproof trousers.

I have a selection of casual quilted jackets of different weights according to how cold it it, from a puffer that makes me look like Michelin man to a lightly quilted spring type jacket.

Formal coats - so a camel edged with fur. A cerise coat and a brown coat with a hood lined with fur (False of course) , and a Persian blue.

Some I’ve had for donkeys years but they still get worn as they are all classic style. I did charity one last year as it had 1980s shoulders and looked very dated.
