I was a Saturday girl in Lilley and Skinners Oxford Street many years ago. We got commission on selling’ the extras’. I never got much commission as I wasn’t a pushy sale person.

It’s z bit like using insurance from the holiday company, nice little earner for them.

Never succumb to after sales. Have a standard selection of shoes polishes which I use regularly and a suede brush. Has worked for many years now.

I’ve bought coloured polish (usually a cream) to match shoes, and have used it.
Nothing much else.

I get that neutral shoe cleaner - I think it’s Kiwi and use for most shoes. Occasionally, however, if a coloured leather shoe gets scuffed you need a coloured polish. If you didn’t buy the polish at time of buying the shoes it can be very difficult to match. So I think it depends on the colour of the shoe and especially if it’s one of the reds.

I used to but no more!
We have a shoe cleaning box full, must sort it out.

No. I use shoe polish when needed, which is hardly ever as I live in slippers and crocs!
But, on winter shoes and boots I just use Cherry shoe polish. Or furniture polish if I have no proper stuff.
Brush off suede gently.

I pay for my suede shoes and boots to go in a machine to be treated in Deichman shoes, it’s about £3, it is worth every penny

Many years ago, my daughter had a Saturday job in a shoeshop. The extras were where the shop made their biggest profit, so they got commission on all the cleaning products and acessoriesthey sold.

Do you enthusiastically say 'yes' to all the insoles, shoe-cleaning products, waterproofing or whatever the assistant says is important for the care of your new shoes? And do you ever use them?

I try and refuse them, but often I am convinced that they are indispensable. I rarely clean the shoes though. And so often I have been told that the insoles can be washed, but I never do! And I've never put trainers in the washing machine.

I remember shoes lined up on the coal bunker every Sunday when I was at school. Had to polish the leather ones and whiten the plimsolls. Recently I had a clear out and threw away some dried-up shoe polish and leaky tubes of shoe cream with hardly anything left in them.
