down coats are everywhere at the moment, but aren't they cruel? do they still make down by pulling the soft feathers from baby ducks?

There are legitimate sources of down which are taken from birds that are dead or from collecting down that the birds themselves pluck from their breasts.

Most companies now only use ethically sourced down.

I consider down collection to be cruel and wouldn't touch anything manufactured with down. I don't believe that there's a way of checking where it has been sourced with 100 percent certainty.

No, down doesn’t come from baby ducks, or ducklings as I would call them. It comes from older ducks. Cheaper coats probably have polyester filling. I have a warm padded coat, but it isn’t down. It’s a plant-based padding.
