Knickers

I have relied on M & S for underwear for years but been very dissatisfied with the multipacks over the last few pairs, which are now the only option for cotton. They seem to develop holes and the seams fall apart very quickly. It appears they focus more on the price of the pack than the quality, but it is not very sustainable to continually replace them and customers may be willing to pay a little more for a better-made product.
Would it not be possible to have a better quality in cotton (or mainly cotton) in say, white, black and nude in a multipack if necessary? If pack price is an issue, reduce the amount in the pack.
Wrote to M&S along these lines and usual cut and paste reply. Anyone got any good alternatives?

I think most shoppers now have got so used to paying next to nothing for clothes that they wouldn't want to pay more. That's exactly why we have so many cheap imports from India and China.

Very daring of you, GranJan60 , to mention the colour nude. Best get behind the sofa pronto ?

I haven’t bought any from M&S recently as I have far too many already. There are other places selling pure cotton undies but Marks are the only ones that have the shape and coverage I prefer. Have you searched online? Damart is probably a good place to try.

Damart has been my go to store for the past couple of years and I have been pleased with my purchases from them.

I remember my mum always bought Ethel Austin double gusset cotton knicks she must have been their best customer at the time.

I know just what you mean !
M&S has always been my go to for knickers for quality, fit and comfort and the fact that for some time they were one of the few places that actually sold multi packs.
Decided my undies needed replacing so bought 2packs knickers plus 2 packs of the multipack bras.
I only opened one pack of the knickers and after only 6 months the seams are coming apart.
Of the bras, I had one pack that were plain cotton that were soooo comfortable, I was thinking of buying more - until I wore the second one in the pack.
The underwire started poking through so it looked as if I had 3 boobs by the middle of the afternoon (not a good look when wearing a t shirt!) .
I complained to customer service by email and all I got was a reply saying "Thanks for letting us know, we will let our quality control dept know"
I have long thought that as soon as M&S started using overseas industries to produce their products , that the quality had fallen for most things and wonder how many millions they lost over the years by having to refund for items of bad quality ?
My ex husband works in textiles in China and has often said that he frequently gets in trouble with the company directors over the amount of stock being made that he returns to the factory - they seem to have no concept of actual quality control - you show them the standard and after a short time they slip back into the unacceptable.
Not the worker's fault - they are often paid per item rather than on the finish , so rush and make mistakes.
Maybe it is also our fault for wanting to have cheap clothing!

I have one word - Sloggi.
They are well made, a great fit, and last for ever through hundreds of washes.

Last knickers I bought came from John Lewis. I like cotton rich panties and these had the highest cotton content. They seem to be wearing well.

I bought new M&S knickers last year and haven’t had a problem with them. I did struggle to get the beigy ones but I got some of them from Primark which are comfy.

Try Sainsbury’s, surprisingly good.

Antonia Tue 01-Feb-22 15:30:54

My knickers are all multipacks from M & S. I've not had any problem with them, I just buy new ones from time to time, but they wash and fit (even my large posterior) well.

Oh I used to love the cotton M & S knickers, but the last lot I got were awful quality. I’ve just discovered taking shape.com and their lovely knickers. They are an Australian company but have outlets in this country. They have bamboo knickers and organic cotton ones, in sizes from 12 to 24. Some of them have crossover type leg openings which lie flat and don’t dig in and feel so good on. They have a sale on at the moment and I admit to spending hours on their site.

This just reminds me my mother always used to buy new knickers if she was going on holiday . I buy from Bonmarche .

Blossoming Tue 01-Feb-22 16:06:54

Floradora9 I buy new ones every time I have a hospital stay, that’s probably how I’ve ended up with so many grin

Nannarose Tue 01-Feb-22 16:07:30

I know not everyone can do this, but I make my own.
I am very fussy about my underwear, and I buy expensive bras when they are reduced - which means that they are often unusual colours. I buy stretch satin or cotton remnants when I see them, keep a stock of soft knit cotton & elastic, and can make a nice pair in an hour.

Another vote for John Lewis here. I swapped to their multi pack knickers after having some problems with the quality of M and S.

I’ve not looked back, they wash and wear extremely well.

Forget knickers, according to Woman’s Hour today we’re all being nudged to get back into thongs (?), which are apparently making a big comeback after falling out of favour. And they must show prettily and lacily above whatever garment is worn over them, which means a return to low-rise jeans, shorts, etc.

I once heard a young woman refer to them as instruments of torture.

Oldbat1 Tue 01-Feb-22 19:30:16

Sloggi for me. Used to be M&S knickers but Sloggi all the way now so comfortable and long lasting.

‘Instruments of torture’ is about right!

Plus one for Sainsbury's multi-packs. They seem virtually indestructible, feel comfortable and look pretty.

Serendipity22 Tue 01-Feb-22 20:20:05

Haaaa, i wear nothing but thongs . I am paranoid about knicker lines being evident. Ive worn thongs for absolute years.

Actually, saying that about knicker lines i dont know why its such a huge issue with me because i take on the understanding that if a bum is not worthy of being shown to all on sundry then it should be covered up.

Hahaha thats my take on the matter. X

Jumblygran Tue 01-Feb-22 20:39:33

Have to admit I have never taken to thongs I have worn Sloggi knickers for years, they are comfortable.
But I have just found some that are even more comfortable, Boody.
It is a terrible name but they are very nice to wear, not cotton but bamboo which makes them breathable and sustainable.
Buy them online.

Jane43 Tue 01-Feb-22 20:48:56

My friend swears by Sloggi too, you can sometimes get them in T K Maxx.

Grannytomany Wed 02-Feb-22 00:51:40

Sloggi maxi for ever.

Jalyn Wed 02-Feb-22 00:57:05

Sloggi midi for me. Last ages and so comfy

HettyBetty Wed 02-Feb-22 07:35:30

Another vote for Sainsburys knickers. I buy the packs of "full briefs", they are comfortable and last for ages. No thongs here, even my mid 20s DD says they are torture.
