You need a stylist who's good at curly hair, it's a different technique to straight hair. If it's cut well it should style itself. I've a very trendy "wolf" cut and it curls nicely. A wolf cut is the one where you pull it up into a ponytail on top of your head and cut the end off. It's supposed to work best with wavy or curly hair

I am never going to a hairdressers again, as I posted earlier I was going back to get the mess sorted that the hairdresser had cut last week but she's made it even worse - I am so annoyed. Like Germanshepherdsmum I got my Husband to cut the back and I've had to sort the front out.

My husband only cuts mine because it’s long and all one length. I do the fringe myself. If you have short or layered hair you really do need a hairdresser. Sounds like you need to find a different one and go armed with pictures of what you want. Good luck!

I always take photos with me on my phone - from Pinterest. Wouldn’t go for a haircut without them!

It's very difficult. Im convinced your hair changes as you get older. I often think younger stylists don't know how to cut seniors hair. It took me years to find a hairdresser that I felt understood me and my hair. Autoimmune conditions and medications definitely take their toll. I had to stop colouring my hair as I was taking a reaction to the dye. Ive had more compliments on my hair now than I got when colouring it. Im relieved not to have the hassle anymore, just wash and go.

Must admit though , the number 8 wasn't my best look ?

I’m going to try a new hair dresser today! Going back to chin length, but I’m mighty tempted by the no. 8 ?! I may well work my way to that.

I totally sympathise. Ive had short hair since I was 12, growing it no longer than chin length in that time. Mostly its been a pixie cut. During first lockdown I got so desperate I used my husbands clippers ~ a numer 8 all over. It looked ok and did it a couple more times but it wasnt layered so didnt grow as I liked. Ive had brilliant and horrendous experiences of how good or bad it's been cut. Paid £10 to £75. Most expensive not always the best. I wasnt happy with the few cuts I’d had before lockdown so was looking for a new hairdresser. And I’ve found her. Absolutely brilliant and only £25. I go every 6 to 8 weeks. It’s similar to Judi Dench in the Marigold hotel film but not as grey. Wash, run my hands through and leave it dry. I was told long ago not to use shampoo evey time as it clogs the hair. Now I only use shampoo every week to 10 days and its in farbetter condition. Good luck to those in search of a skilled hair cutter ?

Yes, take a photo of what you'd like, so they know to do it completely different.

Thanks everyone! When I was younger sometimes I could just wash my hair and let it try naturally. Those days have gone!! I’m at the hairdressers again next week so will go armed with photos etc!

Glenfinnan, next time you are at the hairdresser, can you ask her not to use any styling tools other than the dryer? This way she can see how your hair dries with the waves. I have some very strong waves just over my ears, and my hair will stick straight out if it is cut the wrong length. Using a straightener or curling iron on it only lasts for a few hours, and the waves bounce out again. My hairdresser knows my hair now, and will make sure to cut it at the right length for that wave.

Have you tried a hot brush? You can often get one for a fiver in a charity shop or borrow one from a friend or family member.

It really is much easier with longer hair. No styling required. Tie back/put up if needed. I had shorter, layered hair once and it was a nightmare. Never again. My husband cuts mine as it's all one length, did it again today. Now I've gone grey I save a fortune on hairdressers' bills.

I use a heated hair straightener to take out kinks and curves , I use it with light spray of heat protector , works wonders .

I always take a photo in with me and it's currently really short but she always does what I ask for and I'm really happy with the result.

I totally understand, I have had so many disasters at the hairdressers. I'm actually going back tomorrow because I had my hair cut last week and it's nothing like how I asked, I showed her a picture and said what I wanted but I cannot get it to go right, she's left it too long and not done enough layers.

Much easier with longer hair I find. I’ve always been hopeless with hair but with shoulder length hair I just tie it back and it looks fine and no bother at all. I also have a selection of scrunchies and those claw type clips to add variety.

I used to get the same when my hair was really short.
It ended up looking like a box on my head.

Yes I am also in the same situation. I have gone from short pixie style to longer hair which is thick, white, and has waves in it. Decided to grow it long as the hairdressers have got so expensive, so it is now just shoulder length and I use a diffuser on my hair dryer and run some curly no frizz hair gel through it. No fuss or bother and it seems to be looking ok and easy to manage.

Glenfinin I m in exactly the same situation as you I ve had short spiky pixie style hair for a long time A couple of years ago my hairdresser died very suddenly after a freak accident I was really flapping where to go when a close friend recommended her granddaughter in law The cut was ok, not as good as my other lady, but ok, I ve been going every six weeks since and I swear each time I go the cut gets further and further away from what I first had
It’s going to be difficult as

a) I don’t know where to go and
b) my friend won’t be overjoyed will she ?
Help !!!

Some are hairdressers.
They can get it in the right shape by using all the tools of the trade.
Then when you have a go yourself...

Cutting, not curing!

I would find a new hairdresser who is good at curing hair as it’s often said ‘it’s all in the cut’. Do you know someone who has a good cut? It doesn’t have to be the same style as yours.
When I moved, I needed a new hairdresser and asked friends who had good cuts. The hairdresser I found is great at cutting, both straight and curly hair.
Also, perhaps a hot brush styler would help when styling and drying your hair.

I recently had my hair cut into a jaw length bob. It was shoulder length, but thin and straggly at the ends, and now I’m grey, it looked ‘witchy’.

I am hopeless with hair. Looks great when my hairdresser does it, sticks out a bit when I blow dry it, but life’s too short to worry about hair.
