Curly-wavy hair woes

Why can't I ever get a decent haircut? As I’ve got older my wavy hair has got curlier and I don’t always know how best to manage it. In the past two years I've been around at least 6 hairdressers and I never feel like I get good cut. All of them said they understand curly wavy hair and know how to cut it.

I find someone through recommendations or searching on the web, I go to my appointment full of hope that this time they'll be the one. I take photos with me and I try hard to describe what I want and don't want. I leave thinking it's fine then when I get home and wash it I see uneven bits or one side slightly longer than the other, the fringe too short, layered too much etc etc then I begin the whole cycle again of searching for a decent hairdresser.

The most recent one was in a reputable salon where the stylists are all level 3 and teach at the local hair academy too. Since I've had it done it won't sit right, if you get me. I've got two big curls at eye level growing out the side of my head like horns and it looks square shaped. I've noticed it's uneven at the back too.

All I want is someone who can cut well and cut curly wavy hair. I'm going to growit now until I can find someone I can trust to do it properly - but sadly that's easier said than done. Perhaps I'll start wearing hats to cover it up.

My hair has always been curly, more of a frizz in fact. My hairdresser puts a smoother on it and blow dries it straight. During the week it curls and waves up again, but not too much. I'm happy with that, but I do go every week. Couldn't do it myself during lockdown, and it was a messy frizz.

I would just love to have your curly hair, mine is as straight as a poker but I still have problems at the hairdressers and I have tried many.

Thanks for all your messages I can’t decide whether is it better to get your hair cut by a curl specialist who usually charges more than for a standard cut or find a good hairdresser who can cut curly wavy hair. I can't help thinking that if you are a good skilled hairdresser then you should be able to cut all hair types, although I can’t find one who I’m happy with

Oh the curly hair woes? my hair is straight on the left side and curly on the right, every time I go to the hairdresser I am.going to come out looking modern stylish and fab! Never happens of course, wake up next morning with a little crown of curls on top and wispy bits sticking out every where, I dont know the answer but I do sympathise

Did someone say fringe ?

springisinthehair.com/ I remembered one salon! Might not be so far away for you?

That place looks amazing ! Just the sort of place curly haired girls need. Too far for me though, sadly. I think when I've had it cut by 'specialists' previously they have been someone who has done the training but without the experience of cutting dry curls properly.

Hi - I have frizzy hair. I now have it cut reasonably short and layered - with a fringe! I blow dry it then spray with the amazing Paul Mitchell Freeze and Shine spray. Never have to fuss with it all day.

Does anyone on here use straighteners? If so, can you recommend a really good one? I straighten my hair in the morning but later in the day it's back to its old wayward self! Goodness how I hate my hair. I see some women flick their heads only for their thick straight hair to fall back into place. I'm so envious.

I have a friend with curly hair. I always thought how nice her hair looked, always tidy and smart but she was for ever moaning about it saying she wished she had straight hair like most of her friends. I was starting the feel quite guilty as I have straight hair.
Then one day she was really excited to tell me she was getting her hair professionally straightened - which she did but absolutely hated her new look (to tell you the truth I didn’t like it on her either).
Now she’s back to her old hair style and never says a word about her curly hair. ?

Itsnell, I have very curly hair. I have discovered that it grows in different circular patterns on my scalp & the trick is knowing how to comb it after it’s been cut. Could you get a friend to examine how your hair grows?
I have found a young hairdresser who can cut it though I have to be firm about what I want. I let her dry it so I can see what is wrong after a cut. I never expect to leave with it looking perfect.
The main problem is her trying to even it both sides which won’t work as it does on straight hair as the growth patterns are different on each side, the top & the back. I then get her to cut the bits that look odd. It’s a work in progress still. But there is hope. Good luck. Curls are beautiful.

My geography is very bad hmm but someone in our Birmingham office uses a salon called 'Spring' which I'm told is very good and specialises is curly hair.

knspol Thu 10-Mar-22 12:25:00

Unless you've had a really disastrous cut it might be worth going back to the same salon and telling them what you like and don't like about the previous cut and giving them a chance to make it better. Maybe they need the opportunity to get used to your hair and how you like it cut.

My first reaction was to 'I take photos of what I want', I always want what my hair won't do and I've been lucky that hairdressers I've used have had the decency to tell me before cutting. I would suggest that you say to the hairdresser that you want such and such length, fringe/no fringe etc and ask what they suggest will work with your hair. Good Luck.

I have a fringe but my hair there isn’t curly. Weird!

Itsnell Wed 09-Mar-22 17:56:32

Thanks. I’m adding all the recommendations to my list to check them out.

Ps I’m East Midlands and don’t mind travelling to places

Madgran77 Wed 09-Mar-22 17:25:55

Are you in travelling distance of London Itsnell? Aveda salon covent garden, Michael, excellent with curly hair! He's very experienced so not cheap but so worth it for me after years of horror stories!

Visgir1 Wed 09-Mar-22 16:54:40

My daughter has amazing curly hair which she hates. Gets it Brazilian straighten every 3 months or so, it expensive but it tames it.

AreWeThereYet Wed 09-Mar-22 16:36:36

I follow this lady, Mel, on Youtube. She's a hair dresser who specialises in curly hair (but, sadly, in Canada). She's helped me tame my frizz and work out which products will keep my curls in.

I’ve had a running battle with my not straight but not curly hair all my life. I use straighteners every day but it’s hopeless really. Whoever mentioned their fringe, definitely use a straightener on that if nothing else. Pretty curls are gorgeous but mine isn’t one thing nor the other.

NotAGran55 Wed 09-Mar-22 16:14:48

I have a friend who goes to a specialist curly hair salon and her hair is lovely. If you want to know the name of it Itsnell then feel free to message me.
If my hairdresser ever stops working I will definitely go there but I’m happy with mine as I tame it every day to bring it under control! The natural look is too wild.

LadyStardust Wed 09-Mar-22 16:04:05

I used to belong a 'Curly Girl' group on Facebook and they talked about salons you could go for a proper curly cut! I don't belong the group anymore so I cant ask. I know these salons are few and far between. I think some cuts were called Deva cuts? From what I can remember they weren't cheap either! But the before and after photos were pretty impressive! Hope someone can be more specific! Good luck. I loved my curls but the older I get the less curly my hair is! Strange how we are all so different.

Itsnell Wed 09-Mar-22 15:44:32

Thanks for the advice
Judy54 my fringe is a mess - all curled up at the ends. I’ve got a high forehead so need a bit of cover. It’s the bane of my life!

Judy54 Wed 09-Mar-22 15:29:13

Me too I have learnt to embrace my curly/wavy hair. Amazed that you have a fringe Itsnell something I have never been able to have, thought you needed straight hair to wear a fringe!
