Curly-wavy hair woes

My hair has got wirier and curlier as I’ve got older. I’ve now found something that works for me. I have a bob style with minimal layering at the ends. The fuller length keeps my hair from frizzing so much while the layers at the bottom help stop the ends from poking out.

I’ve also ‘embraced my curls’ by taking tips from the Curly Girl Method. I do still use a shampoo, but a mild solid shampoo. Moisturising well then using a styling cream for curly hair helps it all stay under control. If it has frizzed overnight I dampen my hair again apply a tiny more styling cream on my hands and run my fingers through my hair to form the curls.

I have curly hair and I think you're on a hiding to nothing, sorry ?

People who know how to cut and manage curly hair seem to be very few and far between. Although of course it depends on what you want and what your hair is actually like. I went to London for my last cut (before the pandemic) and it was okayish but not great. Now I just let it grow and give it a trim every now and again.

Why can't I ever get a decent haircut? As I’ve got older my wavy hair has got curlier and I don’t always know how best to manage it. In the past two years I've been around at least 6 hairdressers and I never feel like I get good cut. All of them said they understand curly wavy hair and know how to cut it.

I find someone through recommendations or searching on the web, I go to my appointment full of hope that this time they'll be the one. I take photos with me and I try hard to describe what I want and don't want. I leave thinking it's fine then when I get home and wash it I see uneven bits or one side slightly longer than the other, the fringe too short, layered too much etc etc then I begin the whole cycle again of searching for a decent hairdresser.

The most recent one was in a reputable salon where the stylists are all level 3 and teach at the local hair academy too. Since I've had it done it won't sit right, if you get me. I've got two big curls at eye level growing out the side of my head like horns and it looks square shaped. I've noticed it's uneven at the back too.

All I want is someone who can cut well and cut curly wavy hair. I'm going to growit now until I can find someone I can trust to do it properly - but sadly that's easier said than done. Perhaps I'll start wearing hats to cover it up.
