Summer dress - help!

I have set my heart on a summer dress, but oh lord, can I find anything that looks anything like. I am 5ft 6" tall with a long torso and everything I look at is short-waisted. I don't want a waist that sits somewhere under my boobs! I am a standard size 12. I have given up on JL, M & S, Next. Even browsing the more expensive websites brings up the same issue.

Anyone got any advice on where to look next?

I agree, Seasalt dresses are stylish, but I found them very shortwaisted. I'm 5'7", wouldn't have said I was especialy long-bodied, but haven't had any luck with them at all. Tried on three or four occasions, but have given up now.

The dresses may be longer waisted than they look. Typically models are used who are much taller than most of us, so the waistlines appear to be much higher. When you actually try the garment on at home you find it's much longer everywhere than it appeared. My problem is the other way round - I'm quite short-waisted - and it's irritating to order something that looks as though it will sit closer to my bust only to find the waist line is down to my hips!

Try Wallis or Silk Fred

In past years I have bought patterned shift dresses in a linen mix from Next, the Edinburgh Woollen Mill and Asda. I know next some this year. I am 5ft 1in tall and not particularly thin.

Try Seasalt. Some really nice maxi or midi summer dresses with sleeves.

The White Stuff?

Sorry, MaryGrand you already said SeaSalt upthread.

TillyTrotter Wed 13-Apr-22 12:58:38

SeaSalt have a few attractive midi dresses (expect to pay around £80).
A bit pricey for some people but I would spend that on a dress for an occasion.
The models wearing the dresses are all young, but they will suit us more mature ladies.

Try Adini and Skyla. Love their tops.

Take a look at Monsoon they have some lovely dresses this year my DD bought 2 from them last month and is really pleased with them.

Another vote for Monsoon, I have a long torso and find their clothing quite good.

Have you looked at SeaSalt? I love their dresses.

I also vote for Boden, John Lewis and Monsoon .
I eagerly anticipate their sales .
Recently I was disappointed with M and S .The fit was poor .

I have just bought a lovely blue floral dress from peacocks it’s midi. I also bought a white floral dress from New Look midi. Last one black floral dress from Matalan all midi lovely dresses. Same height as you size 14 I have to wear midi because of legs (veins) all the dresses are very pretty.

Another vote for Boden, also The White Company, Hush and Mint Velvet have some beautiful dresses in at the moment.

They all get my vote too.

The This Morning programme yesterday featured some dresses from Oasis so I looked at their on line shop. There were some lovely dresses.

I have seen some summer dresses which have a tie belt at the waist which you can position to suit your body shape. Sorry I can’t remember where but think it was John Lewis.

Hermia46 Wed 13-Apr-22 09:41:17

A big thank you, I will have another browse. Maybe I will be dressed for summer eventually!

I like Boden too and have recent brought a summer dress from Finery which is lovely. East has revived itself - some lovely dresses but pricy. If you are going mad you could try Cheffin.
