Summer dress - help!

I have set my heart on a summer dress, but oh lord, can I find anything that looks anything like. I am 5ft 6" tall with a long torso and everything I look at is short-waisted. I don't want a waist that sits somewhere under my boobs! I am a standard size 12. I have given up on JL, M & S, Next. Even browsing the more expensive websites brings up the same issue.

Anyone got any advice on where to look next?

Online shopping has made it very easy to buy summer printed dresses in Pakistan. Women can now explore different designs, colors, and fabrics from the comfort of their homes. This saves time and makes shopping more convenient, especially during hot weather. wearochre.com/collections/eid-festive

Tilly
That's a lovely dress. I have a top in a similar material.

Millie I really like my new Hush dress. Brighter colours and nicer than the picture suggests.

I love Mint Velvet and my new favourite is Hush. They are a lot like Oasis used to be but a bit more pricey.

I would be careful if you buy from any of the ads as the sizing can be all over the place.

I'm 6' and a size 18 and love Monsoon and Joe Brown. Both within my price bracket. Just bought two dresses/tunics from Monsoon - with sleeves as I don't like exposing my upper arms these days.

Monsoon have great reductions at the moment. Up to half price.

I wish I could afford Mint Velvet every time as they have some very unusual styles.

Hermia46 I have axactly the opposite problem. All my height, what is left of it, is in my legs and I am currently looking for a denim jacket which comes to the waist and no further.

There are plenty in the shops. It is just, on me, they fit several inches below the waist.

Don’t believe everything you read on TrustPilot. It’s a business, it’s not there to protect the consumer.

There are lots of dresses advertised on Facebook that look really nice, but from companies I don't recognise or necessarily trust. Does anyone ever buy from these brands?

Look for reviews on sites such as Trustpilot. Read a selection of good/bad reviews to help. Check out the credentials of the company.
Personally, I wouldn’t trust anything from a company posting from the Far East or indeed from Facebook!!

East have some gorgeous dresses if you like Indian style prints. They aren't cheap, but there are still some left in the sale.

I have bought a couple of dresses from Woolovers in their sale and they’re really nice.
Cotton Traders are worth a look too.

Too many dresses at the moment have tons of gathers and make women look bigger than they are. Not flattering.
I saw a lady wearing one the other day, a dress with lots of material and lots of 'shirring' I think it's called?
It looked OK on her but she was very petite and very skinny.
It would have looked horrendous on me.

Someone wake me up when this horrible fashion dies a death and we confused once again see more flattering dresses in the shops.

Today I have given up shopping for clothes!! I am 69 and 5.2 and overweight , the flowery frilly midi dresses do nothing for me . Gone are the days when you had the likes of Richard’s , Debenhams , Wallis et al, I bought a dress on line which was stated as Coral , when it arrived it was bright orange !! Do any of you lovely ladies have any luck finding modern clothes that don’t look like you have come out of Western movie ?

To Hermia 46, I enjoy dressmaking and most of the patterns have a raised waist - as you say - up round your boobs. Not flattering unless you are trying to hide a thick waist or a pregnancy bump. Maybe, try and find a skirt and a blouse or top in a matching fabric. Me, I'll try and find and perfect pattern - might take a while.

I'm tall too and have the same problem. I got this from Roman it looks fabulous on, and the splits don't reveal anything.

Thank you Paperbackwriter ,
I’ve just looked at Hush and ordered a dress ?

My mother used to make all our clothes, she could run up a summer dress in an afternoon. I’m thinking of doing a dressmaking course, I learned the basics at school years go and would love to make dresses and nice tops.

SeaSalt are a lovely range

Ask around the family to see if you have any sewing enthusiasts that could run one up for you. Between the ages of 15 and 45, I made most of my own dresses and the beauty is a) they fit perfectly and b) you know no-one else will turn up in an identical outfit.

Riverwalk

Try Boden - their dresses come in many different cuts and are petite, regular & long.

hadn't looked at Boden for ages - and was shocked at the prices!!

Have you tried H&M on the High Street (and online) or Joe Brown's?

Theoddbird Sat 16-Apr-22 19:19:59

All my dresses are Italian linen bought on ebay. Love them. I detest shopping in shops. Bought online for years and years.

Oops sorry .
Repeating myself...
Or two or two ...

Esmay Sat 16-Apr-22 18:45:06

Hi Hermia ,
Hope that you 've found a lovely summer dress or two or two .
I think that once you find what suits you - maybe buy more than one in their range .
I know that Zara and Wallis aren't going to fit me ,but Boden and Monsoon will .
And I bought a cheap frock in Primark .
It's great !

Good luck with your shopping .
