Has your look/style changed in a surprising way as you’ve aged ?

For example I lost most of my hair through chemo and some has grown back so I have very very short close cropped hair and have discovered it actually suits me, and have pretty much abandoned wig scarf etc.

I also can’t wear black any more (my mother was the same)

Doodledog I just let it do it’s own thing! It’s in the best nick it has been since I was in my 20s. It was falling out for years due to an undiagnosed vitamin D deficiency.
I (loosely) follow the curly girl method (loads on line)
People probably think that it looks a blooming mess most of the time, but after being that close to having a hair system, I just love my new improved hair.
I would have just shaved it all off, but I’m far too fat to confidently carry off that look at the moment!

Thanks for the thread Lucca, I love chatting about stuff like this! thanks

I love that, Yammy, - your bottom has migrated to the front.
Mine too! And there was me thinking I was pregnant! grin.
Oh, for an easy way to avoid the diabetic police! confused

I no longer have an 18 inch waist ?

I had to change my footwear following my brain injury, I literally cannot walk in many shoes, so that hasn’t changed due to age.

Now my hair is turned silver I’m still working out what colours suit me.

I too lost my hair during chemo and I loved the close crop look but as it grew my hair became very curly so I had it cut very short and it eventually went back to pre-chemo. However, I have kept it pretty short since although I do find I need a bit of slap or I look a bit grim. I can't wear black or white near my face as I look ready for the undertaker.

I used to have lovely feet and legs but swollen now with oedema so I wear trousers nearly all the time.

hulahoop Fri 26-Aug-22 14:48:12

My hair is very thin due to chemo I have been a blonde
grey for a long time I keep it short .I have very sparse eyebrows and if I don't pencil them in I look washed out I suit bright colours best but I'm still here even though I have some false bits ?

I do the cumlygirl thing too, Fanny. I use Only Curls products (I even have a sleep cap!)

I am going to find a new hairdresser to look at it with fresh eyes and help me decide what to do with it.

FannyCornforth Fri 26-Aug-22 15:08:52

Cumlygirl! grin

FannyCornforth Fri 26-Aug-22 15:11:29

I have a sleep cap too, but it won’t stay on.
There’s not a great deal that I can do with mine, because I can’t grow a fringe.
I just put clips in the front to give it a bit in height.
And I cut bits off it myself, more like pruning really

I decided I’d like to try a ‘beach wave’ hairstyle, so I got myself one of those hair curling machines that suck the hair in and curl it.
Well … instead of the waves I got Shirley Temple curls, unfortunately they still didn’t go into waves when I brushed them out. It’s a good job I did it at night and only the family saw me.
How I looked a) and how I imagined it b) ??

I don’t wear black now as it makes me look ill. I don’t wear high or polo necks now as I feel too hot , I wore polo necks a lot when I was young.

Apart from that I wear whatever I like although can’t manage high heels any more as balance not great due to spinal stenosis. However I love bright colours and wear trousers, dresses, skirts, shorts whatever I feel like. I’m not a believer in a “ certain wardrobe only” when you’re older

Cumlygirl! grin

I didn't even notice that grin. If 'comely' is a euphemism for overweight, it's not far from the truth, although 'girl' has been pushing it for a few decades now.

Try putting the elastic of the sleep cap behind your ears. Mine won't stay on unless I do that. It looks terrible, but we have to suffer for our comeliness.

That's very fetching, GrandmaSue. Is that a bonnet you have fastened with the blue bow?

Mollygo Fri 26-Aug-22 18:05:47

Menopause curls totally missed me. I’ve had my hair cut short-not quite a pixie cut since before Covid. I thought I’d let it go grey, but I can’t quite bring myself to do it, partly because of all the long haired young things I work with. This summer, the sun gave me highlights, for free.
Like many on here, I don’t wear much black tops any more, but I wear lots of white tops and I only have 2 pairs of boots with heels now.

GrandmasueUK Fri 26-Aug-22 20:21:04

I’m thinking I should get a bonnet now Doodledog, preferably one with extra hair attached. I tried one of those hair pieces that sit on top of the head. It looked like a curly hat and was completely the wrong colour! When I FaceTime the family I have to make sure I don’t have the light behind me as I look bald.

Doodledog Fri 26-Aug-22 20:30:50

Well, you never know. Bonnets might catch on as fashion items grin

GrandmasueUK Fri 26-Aug-22 20:47:24

I could be a trendsetter ? and make my own in matching or co-ordinating fabrics

Georgesgran Fri 26-Aug-22 21:43:00

Blimey - little house on the prairie look!

My hair’s a nice shade of grey and I usually have a purple streak. I wear a lot of black, navy or charcoal in the Winter, but with bright scarves/bags to draw the eye away from the rest!! I’m just glad there’s nothing seriously wrong with me - long may that last.

Hallo , as a fashion hairstyle the shampoo and set please for men is gaining popularity. I have white hair and at 66 years old and a heterosexual man it suits me very well . A lot of the women liked my hairstyle done like this, I have to wear skirts of course with hairstyle, but long and maxi skirts nd long dresses only. I was surprised recently to see mini skirts handed in to charity shops mainly blue denim and black leather material. Mini skirts are not suitable to wear anyone can be raped by a group of people. Always dress modestly .

BigBertha1 Fri 26-Aug-22 22:14:40

I've developed this odd sneer I think maybe a mini stroke a few years ago and my arms are dreadful despite playing golf and netball. I think I'm going to develop a multi layered style of dressing floaty things and scarves to disguise it all. DH has a portrait of me at 35 pm his desk ..drives me bloody mad I would like to set light to it.

Georgesgran Fri 26-Aug-22 22:24:29

COLLIN66 - think you’re barking up the wrong tree here!

CanadianGran Fri 26-Aug-22 22:35:09

Lucca, I'm glad you are feeing comfortable with your short hair, and hope the treatments are going well.

I have to say my style has stayed the same over the years, but now I have a bit more disposable income to buy better quality, and take a bit of planning with my clothing purchases. When I was younger, I was drawn to anything on sale, but often it didn't fit very well into my wardrobe.

My colouring has also changed with my greying hair. I've never worn black much, but now I have veered away from warm earthy colours to more grey, blue and cooler colours.

Also, for years I wore turtlenecks all winter, now I just can't, even though I still like the look.

lixy

Wrinkles! GS mentioned the other day that my arms look like 'that paper we use at Christmas to make the table look nice'. He was being kind but, yes, he did mean crepe paper. At least my arms aren't red, green and white!

Glad to hear your hair suits you Lucca.

I find I'm wearing more unstructured clothes now I'm at home more. I hardly ever wear anything with a waistband anymore.

This made me smile ? Aww love him! I’ve got Christmas paper arms as well ?

Bijou Mon 29-Aug-22 12:20:14

My arms and legs are now thin and skin like crepe paper but my tummy looks as though I am pregnant.
Used to alway wear earrings and pearl necklace but have given up.

nanna8 Mon 29-Aug-22 12:38:50

I’ve still got very thick hair but my brain is getting thicker, too. I can’t remember things like I used to. Also the skin on my legs is getting drier and drier, yucky. I’ve still got all my teeth but I was wondering whether to have them whitened because they are beginning to look a bit creamy yellow, double yuck.

I'm known fir colour and funky clothing which has developed over the past 20 years slightly changing design over those years.

I started to find myself in my 40s and have developed my own unique style.

I own one black dress kept for "those" occasions when black is required. Bought new in timeless wear 3 years ago.

My last one went to the charity box has I had worn it for my late husband celebration of life service in 2018. I wasn't wearing it again.

I do colour and also my hair too. I have long hair and it will remain that way.

If I ever was to lose my hair because of an illness it would be a wig here. I'm a Leo and my mane is my pride and joy.

This is who I am. Others do what's right for them
