For many, clothing is a necessity, not something to indulge in or fret over. A limited, well chosen wardrobe can work for so many.

I am in your camp, not necessarily dresses, but a more casual wardrobe with many different trousers, tops, jackets and shoes. I don't want limitations! I see something I fancy at a shop and I manage to somehow fit it into my wardrobe. It could be seen as some as wasteful, but I would feel very limited with such a narrow amount of clothing as your friend.

Let me tell you about my good friend.
She is very thin and is a marathon runner.
She shaves her head because she can't be bothered with hair when she's camping (which is frequently.) She suits the shaven look as she has beautiful high cheekbones and a slender face.
She uses soap and water and a basic moisturiser/sunscreen, nothing else.
She owns 4 pair of shorts, black, 4 tee shirts, grey, 4 pairs of jeans, 4 jumpers, all navy blue. Apart from 2 pairs of shoes and a raincoat, this is her entire wardrobe and she just replaces like with like, when necessary.
She wears no makeup at all.
She looks fabulous!

I am a close friend. However:
I wear makeup and have my hair highlighted.
I own (and wear) at least 25 casual floral summer dresses.
My wardrobe is bulging and I like it that way.
I am overweight.
I would never go camping and like the finer things in life when on holidays.
My friend thinks I look fabulous.

We don't envy each other but here's the thing, ladies:
We are both happy in our own skin!

So, unless you're really unhappy about the face/body you present to the outside world, just remember we are all fabulous.
If you feel you need it, get some style advice to boost your confidence but if you're happy, just be yourself.

You have to do what feels right for you. I enjoy clothes shopping and I like putting outfits together - scarves, jewel et, etc. That makes me sound smart - in fact I like quite a casual but coordinated look.

Being happy in your own skin is very important but I think it's a failing of human nature to compare ourselves to others, isn't it? The beauty and fashion industries rely on us wanting something different which constantly changes.

I think many of us become more comfortable in our own skins as we get older, at least I hope so.

Good post - I don't usually read anything about style and beauty as it's not a topic that interests me- however, this is a very positive attitude for anyone to take

I have a friend who is like your friend and has a very, very small capsule wardrobe with just two of everything!! two jumpers two pairs of jeans two pairs of trousers two jackets et cetera. She accessorises beautifully and therefore can make fabulous outfits out of such a small wardrobe, I have tried, no chance…? if she does buy something new like a jumper she will get rid of one of the jumpers she already has…

I’m in your camp AussieGran but I do have my travelling days when I feel invisible, no make up, jeans and anorak. Very enjoyable.
Sometimes it’s possible to have a taste of both sides of life.

Your friend’s lifestyle sounds incredibly liberating
