Home dyed hair too dark - how to lighten?

I’ve been home dying my light brown hair blonde for years - but since going grey, it’s looked rather ‘brassy’. So, last night I used a darker home dye (dark blonde) - but now it’s too dark, and I look sallow!
Google says to strip the dye out by washing frequently with medicated shampoo - I’ve done this several times - slight improvement. Any other ideas?

Have you tried the purple neutralising shampoo’s ? I would try one but not leave it on your hair, wash in ,wash out and see what you think?
I have “chemically enhanced” hair !! And if I think it’s looking a bit brassy I shampoo as normal and then do a quick shampoo with the purple products.
Hope this helps.

My hairdresser told me to use Head and Shoulders shampoo. Ive never tried it though.

Some years ago on GN this came up and remember tomato sauce being mentioned ., not sure how it was to be used.
I self dyed my hair for years using Clairol and it started getting darker which looked a big harsh on me so I found a hairdresser who visits me at home; am
Happy now and hair is completely grey/blond ish,

You can buy stuff that will strip the colour out. It’s on the shelves with the hair colour.

I used it once when I made the same mistake. I just can’t remember what it’s called.

It worked!

Boots and Superdrug both do one. I think mine was Clairol.

When this happened to me a few months ago, I tried putting a lighter hair colour on - didn't work at all (as probably everyone but me already knew!) I ended up getting highlights put in at the hairdresser - pricey, but looks good.

Thanks for your help - I’ll ask in Boots tomorrow. My daughter says it does look a bit lighter now - washed in medicated shampoo about 15 times!!

Hi Sarah
Go to the hairdressers to get it sorted. This could easily be a frying pan / fire situation.
I’ve been dyeing my own hair since my teens, but I wouldn’t risk stripping it myself
Good luck!

Can’t afford to go to the hairdressers! It’s not a disaster, and it’s a semi permanent, so will gradually grow out. I’m going to just keep shampooing it - that seems to help.

It will fade so I would leave well alone rather than risk damaging your hair.

Head and shoulders definitely works.

Another poster mentioned tomato sauce, it helps when blonde hair gets a green tinge after too much swimming in highly chlorinated pools.

I find that my hair is usually a little bit to dark when i follow the instructions. I find it fades to an acceptable colour after a couple of weeks of normal washing. Plus, of course exposure to daylight, so take lots of walks over the next month.

When I was younger my hair was very dark brown with some golden streaks in the front .
If bleached it would turn a carrot shade .
Now it's white and grey I use a red shade from Nutrisse which everyone days looks nice .
But I've had some
disasters :
Everytime I've tried other makes I've ended up with very dark purple hair -just right for Hallowe'en .
I've tried Head and Shoulders and baby shampoo , but this works better :
lemon juice mixed into baking soda , left on for five minutes minimum 20 maximum and rinsed off with water and vinegar .
I wouldn't wash it 15 times though .
Three times a day maximum and a conditioner afterwards .

Good luck !

I haven't had to use it three times in a day -once is enough until I'm happy with the faded dye .
It is strong .
Please be very careful .

This once happened to me and I phoned the L'Oréal helpline. They told me to use the cheapest dandruff shampoo I could get. I put it on dry hair like a conditioner, popped a shower cap on top and left it for a few hours. It helped and I washed it daily for a week or two after that. Better quality dandruff shampoos protect the colour hence the recommendation for using the cheapest.

Sun is the very best solution so your timing is unfortunate.

It will get lighter so don't fret and surprisingly most people won't notice.

Golden blonde suits me (it was my natural colour) so I always buy a 9.3. Golden blonde. It can be muted with purple shampoo.
Ash blonde looks aging in my opinion and artificial, you don't get the healthy looking golden shine.

Thanks for all your advice, Esspee. Yes, I’m using a cheap medicated shampoo, and it’s definitely working. It’s quite sunny here at the moment, so I might also try diluted lemon juice / hair dried in sunlight.

Just to say the cheap medicated shampoo has definitely worked! Quite sunny the last couple of days too, so have been outside a lot. Phew!
