Beauty regime - a con?

I stopped using all facial products - even moisturiser - some years ago & noticed absolutely no discernible difference! At the age of 62 I use a lovely seaweed bar soap as an all over wash & feel it does the job beautifully. Anybody else come to this conclusion?

Complaining*. Looking younger hasn't improved my proof reading!

I have used Olay since I was 14/15 yrs old(it was ulay thensmile). I was asked for id in asda when I was 47grin and I'm now 57 but still people think I'm younger. My mum never looked her age and I followed her example with the Olay so if it's cream or genetics I don't know. I'm not comllaining either way.

I use mainly M n S Formula range. (the extra rich ones) They often have 15 or 20% off if you are a regular, making moisturiser about £18. My skin is very dry due to the meds I take.
The day moisturiser has SPF in.

Serums -in posh cream they are silly expensive, so but Inkey Hyaluronic Acid is £5.55 on Amazon. (use under moisturiser for very dry skin.)

You can inject Hyaluronic Acid or similar under the skin (by experts) but thats ££££ silly I think, enuf unto the day.

When i was about 17 I read in a teenage magazine that looking after your skin was far more important than the make up you used.

So since then I have massaged moisteriser gently into my skin every morning, as I have got older i have used more and massaged longer and I think my skin shows the benefit of this, be ing much smoother and less lined than the skin of others my age.

I have always used the cheapest moisteriser I could get away with, Boots own brand and then when I began to develop allergies to some of the chemicals, I moved to organic moisterisers.

I have always taken my make-up with theatrical make-up remover, I used to buy it in big pots from Boots, now I buy it online.

I am not remotely interested in looking young for my age, just being well maintained at any age. In the way that you keep a house or an old car in good order regardless of age.

Casden ?
One I forgot.

I think a lot of the beauty industry is massively overpriced, and pushing to use 5 or 6 products.
cleanser
toner
serum
moisutizer
eye cream
spf

And that is before any makeup. Yikes.
I wash with regular soap, take off any extra eye makeup with my toner, then use a good moisturizer with spf. These don't need to be too expensive. I used L'Oreal for years, but have switched over to Marcelle, a Canadian brand. I also like Avene.

I recently had a skin cancer removed from my nose and the doc said to use Vaseline to help it heal. Seems to have worked a treat.

Holly my mom told me years ago that Shirley Bassey uses Vaseline on her face.

I believe expensive creams are a con. Cheaper moisturisers work just as well.
My favourite is Ponds Cold Cream, which is also useful for removing makeup, even waterproof mascara.
I also use Vaseline or petroleum jelly. A burns surgeon recommended it to Yehudi Menuhin’s mother and he said at a great age, her skin was as unlined and smooth as a baby’s bottom.

I use Simple products. But at the moment I'm only using a facial wash. My mother creamed / oiled / lotioned and although she looked OK for her age, she still aged. I can't see the point really.

The only thing that concerns me about aging is my access to work. Looking younger is beneficial in that respect. But other than that, I really don't care.

I avoid cream with SPF now, though I have used them in the past. There is a theory that these chemicals have a link to frontal fibrosing alopecia, which I have. The use of spf creams all year round is not necessary. I believe most skin cancers are a result of sunburn in early years of life plus the vit D I get from exposure to sunlight is valuable. I certainly don't let the sun burn me and I never sunbathe but I want to hang on to the remaining hair I have.

I’m with you on this, Tessyo. Saves money, too but you do need a decent quality soap.

I remember the late Helena Rubinstein saying "If you can't afford to use my moisturiser every day buy one you can afford. Using it every day is the important thing" I am currently using a very nice but very cheap cream from Aldi and it seems to work as well as any of them.

dogsmother Sat 08-Oct-22 22:49:20

Hmm. I try really hard nd use daily eye serum and spf moisturizer. My sisters don’t they carry more weight than me and definitely have better skin and both look younger too.

BigBertha1 Sat 08-Oct-22 22:17:33

I've done the cleanse tone nourish routine for about 40 years I think it's paid of but I now need some lifting gear

Farzanah

Genes are the main predictor of how skin appears as you age, plus as has been mentioned, not smoking, little alcohol consumption, good diet and general health. You can slather on as many products expensive or cheap as you like but they do not penetrate the deeper skin layers.

Agreed except you didn’t mention wearing sunscreen every day, That’s the biggest single thing you can do to preserve your skin.

Mollygo Sat 08-Oct-22 21:55:38

That’s the problem. What I use promises to make a difference. I use it just because I like how my skin feels and looks when I do, but I daren’t stop using it in case it really does work.

I wouldn't know. I've always put cream on my face in the morning - since I was about 14. If I don't, it feels dry and taut, but I don't know if it looks any the better for it.

Grandmadinosaur Sat 08-Oct-22 19:40:43

I agree Georgesgran I use them morning and night.

Grandmadinosaur Sat 08-Oct-22 19:39:05

AskAlice It’s L’occitane Immortelle divine eye balm. Hope it’s ok to post that.

Georgesgran Sat 08-Oct-22 19:32:28

In my experience, I’ve found most moisturizers/serums to be much the same, irrespective of cost. The secret is to use them every day - they’ll not work left in the pots/jars.

PamelaJ1 Sat 08-Oct-22 18:53:18

I have been a beauty therapist for 50years and I can say, hand on heart, that looking after your skin pays dividends.
This means- don’t smoke, keep alcohol to a minimum, eat well.
Protect your skin against UV- UVB burns UVA ages.
A simple routine -clean and protect works.
All the other extras- monthly facials give the skin a boost but without the basics you are wasting your time.

BlueBelle Sat 08-Oct-22 18:24:31

I m with you tessyo I ve never used any creams or moisturisers on my body or face just a nice soap Maybe just the luck of the draw
