My late MIL came home from wig shopping with a friend with two truly dreadful wigs, she was having chemo and nearly bald.

The wigs were sold by someone recommended by the hospital.

I did a lot of research and found someone 50 miles away that would give a full consultation then cut and style wigs for her, it was a really bespoke service and good value.

She was thrilled, the wigs looked so natural and were comfortable.

We got lots of this ladies leaflets and took them to the hospital, the staff known to my MIL couldn’t believe she was wearing a wig.
When we returned to get MIL a new Christmas wig she got a huge discount as she had so much business through the leaflets.

When we used to go for appointments we could tell the ladies that had been to her!

Even when her hair grew back she would wear one of her wigs.

I have Androgenic Alopecia and wear wigs. There are two really good and professional wig companies who also have shops, but too far away from me, so I have ordered online.
Simply Wigs
Joseph's Wigs

They are incredibly helpful and empathetic on the phone for advice, and their websites have plenty of free information. There is no problem returning a wig if it's no good, but obviously it's best to spend some time measuring your head, choosing the right colour, etc. There are dozens of colours and hundreds of styles to choose from.

I can't afford the human hair wigs so have had the synthetic ones, but honestly they are so realistic that even my hairdresser couldn't tell. Because I was used to having thin hair for a long time, I asked my hairdresser to thin out my first wig so it wasn't too much of a change.

If you like the look of a wig, then check it out on YouTube. There are hundreds of wig videos. It's amazing how different a wig can look on different people.

Have you thought of looking at toppers .I have one which is a low density one which is more realistic because it's not too thick.i got mine from a company called K couture
It wasn't too expensive .it's real human hair it cost £220 last year but may have increased in price like everything
The good thing is they will make it he colour you want

If you watch youtube, there are lots of wig wearers, for various reasons, who review cheap/expensive wigs, and give tips on how to customise them.

I am hoping to change the colour of mine, first.

Thanks all. I've tried extensions / hair on a wire thing ... I'll keep looking at wig websites!

Her hair was much worse originally, she also took some vitamins and that really helped

MissAdventure Sun 04-Dec-22 19:29:47

That was money well spent, Debbi smile

I didn't realise, but I just zoomed in, and I can see the wide parting.

I have those all over my head, plus patches where there the hair has completely white, round circles at the roots.

My daughter had thining hair after having a tumor removed from her thyroid glad. After years of suffering I paid for her to have extentions put it . They are fitted with invisible tapes. You can have whatever length you want

MissAdventure Sun 04-Dec-22 17:53:26

Oh they look nice.
Bet I could make them look a whole lot worse.

JaneJudge Sun 04-Dec-22 17:49:02

my friend buys them on ebay, they mainly come from hong kong but they absolutely look real

I just googled and this place came up. I know a lot of the reviews are from young people but they look very nce/natural

Ooh, I have just had a thought, there are "wigs" now, that are basically hair on a wire.

You put it on like a headband, arrange your own hair to cover up the wire, and Bob's your uncle!

MissAdventure Sun 04-Dec-22 17:40:16

I have a few, none of which is right.

It's the colour match that is a problem, but then I've ordered them online.

I am going to try and persevere though, because my hair doesnt look as if it's coming back anytime soon.

Amazon have decent (cheap) wigs, if you wanted to try a couple out.

For the past 10 years my hair has progressively thinned, to the point where I now despair of it! I used diy hair extensions for a couple of years, 7 years ago - but they eventually made it even worse, and it's taken me a few years of having the broken ends (halfway up my head!) cut off to thicken it out again ... but, it's still very very thin - it takes me less than 2 minutes to dry it.
I'm happy to add volume on the crown with product / gentle teasing, but I'm now considering a wig; have any of you bought a wig? where from? I see them online, but am dubious about their quality ... I don't want to look like Danny La Rue 😆
