I had to buy a dress for a Uni-ball in a hurry. It had a black and flowered patterned skirt and a black pin-tucked top. Staying with a friend I put it on and stood under the light the top was completely see-through and the black bra underneath screamed. I had to wear a borrowed nude body stocking [remember those] My friend who was shorter than me and I had to walk like Quasimodo as it poppered at the crotch. Halfway through the night I gave in and undid the poppers and hoped my skirt didn't ride up.
I think that was the night I got my proposal !!!!!!

I bought a maxi coat. It was huge, tan with a big fur collar. Unfortunately all it did was swamp me so I didn't have it for long. Before that I had a bright orange trouser suit with gold buttons. Thought I was the bees knees....... I'm fairly sure that I went to a wedding in hot pants.

I saved and saved for an Afgan coat and was so pleased with it until I took it home and mum would not let me in the house with it because of the smell it got banished to the garage until the smell wore off which took an age.

My sister and I also had afghan coats and we hitched all the way to Holland in them one Christmas, they absolutely reeked..

A Biba dress in a colour called oxblood, that barely covered my bum.. fortunately I was very slim then

My boyfriend said I looked as if I should be selling pegs
😱

I had a big black astrakhan coat and vintage brown suede and black 20s button up boots from a second hand market.
My mother said “I’m not walking down the street with you looking like that”.
Throw in two lovely black eyes (which I hold on to somewhat), long black hair, pale lips and skin and you get the picture.
My boyfriend said I looked as if I should be selling pegs.

I wore black satin hot pants - sadly no photos exist! Back in the 1970s page boy haircuts and duffle coats reigned. Here’s me with both.

I had very few clothes in my teens so at the time I thought how awful I must look - I have perhaps half a dozen photo’s of me as a teenager and now I think I look pretty much okay in them.

Pretty moderate, really. I was a 70's hippy, broke, no "proper" job ...dungarees, long quite pretty hippy "bo-ho" dresses and skirts. I think the most extreme thing I had was a home made pink skirt with bib in cotton. Flares, of course, what else. No heels - clarks sandals in summer and suede bootees in winter with trousers and a pair of boots with dresses. So photos OK.

A lot of brown stuff - brown was the in colour not black?

Satin loons and hot pants...nuff said!

crazyH Fri 17-Mar-23 18:50:56

Skinny legs on platform heels - that’s me, looked hideous😂

Bakingmad0203 Fri 17-Mar-23 18:22:29

Same here. I was just thinking that today as I was walking behind a girl with auburn hair ( exactly the same shade that mine was) and she looked stunning. I always thought my hair and skinny frame were a turn off to boy, but when I look at photos of me in my late teens and early twenties I was actually pretty!

Kittye I m just like you I always thought I was ugly ( growing up 50s/60s and no confidence ) but looking back at photos I really wasn’t at all I was really pretty and dressed great but just never ever knew it

Shropshirelass Fri 17-Mar-23 17:58:04

Oh yes, a friends wedding, I thought I looked lovely but now when I look at the photo I think not! It was lovely at the time though.

Kittye Fri 17-Mar-23 17:50:44

I had absolutely no confidence growing up in the 50s and 60s.
When I look at old photos now I wish I knew how pretty I looked then, my life could have turned out so different. Wrinkly old bat now so I don’t care what people think😊

I wore some cerise pink hot pants with bib attatched. Looking back I cringe🤣🤣 and had a mullet hairstyle, very trendy at the time, makes my grandchildren smile

I had an amazing Afghan coat, early 70s, I loved it! Sadly the smell was less lovely……

Deedaa Sat 14-Jan-23 20:53:29

Actually I don't think I looked bad at all. I had some really nice mini dresses and trouser suits from Biba and Bus stop and I made quite a lot of my own clothes too. I remember a silver mini that I wore with shocking pink tights and a pink boa, and in the 70s a pair of Oxford Bags that I made from some tweed I bought for 50p in the market. I certainly think I looked better than some of the girls I see today in their "creations"

My mum was a trained dressmaker and made a lot of my clothes from when I was very small to my early teens. Some were terrible - a bright tan maxi skirt in what I can only describe as sofa material was one of them, and a fucshia pink crimplene dress that sat just below the knee when mini dresses were still the norm.

Others were lovely at the time. Brown soft needle cord dress with leg of mutton sleeves which was the envy of my friends. As I got older, pencil skirts and swing jackets in beautiful fluid woollen mix fabrics that she bought from a local market stall at knock down prices. The good thing was that she could draft her own patterns so they were all "made to measure" and fitted perfectly.

Unfortunately, as I got older I fell for the "want to wear what everyone else is wearing" and bought some real horrors with my Saturday job earnings. A navy blue polka-dot mini dress with a cutout back in a really horrible synthetic fabric springs to mind - I spent the whole evening giving everyone electric shocks whenever I came near them. And a pair of what I thought were the "bees knees" white slingback Mary Quant platform sandals with a purple daisy on the front which made me walk like Lurch and went with nothing else in my wardrobe! Luckily, no photographs survive of my fashion disasters...

Oh yes.
Even I knew, by the end of the 70s though, I looked down at myself and thought, this will so not look trendy going forward.

It was Hot Pants for me. Home made too. My word no photos of the outfit around thank goodness!
