Clothes spending

Following on from another thread, how much do you consider is a lot to spend on an everyday item of clothing?
I must admit I do shudder at spending loads on an item of clothing and anything over £30 for tops or bottoms or £50 for a dress ( I rarely buy or wear dresses) I will spend up to £100 for a good coat. I will look at items in sales usually online as I hate it when there are masses of clothes on rails all jumbled up.
I always think if you are spending £100 plus on one item then your shoes and bag also need to be of a very good quality too. But then I can't bring myself to wear that item as going to town or lunch type outfit.
Is it just me. I could afford it but something would hold me back.

GrannyGravy. At the top, look at the Brands heading, you will then find a list.

I must admit, it's not got a great selection just now, but that will change. I mark my favourites and then keep checking for reductions.
Remember, look for voucher codes, before purchasing.
Delivery is usually within two working days, an added bonus.

Sometimes before work I go on Otrium and put loads of stuff n my bsket and then delete it before leaving. I'm not sure why I exercise this type of behaviour early in the morning confused

I find Sainsburys is the worst as I go round the clothes section first and then i get held hostage in the habitat section and then it is a case of having to see what budget I have left for food blush

Joseann, I noticed that someone looked up the price. Why would you bother to do that?

A part of me is convinced that some people post on GN regarding the choice of an outfit to simply show off just how much the are considering spending on an everyday outfit.

Spending comes up a lot when people are posting about their holidays or recommending a holiday destination and/or hotel.

We are all different, have different likes and dislikes, different income brackets and different priorities for where and how to spend our money.

Unfortunately folks are too quick to judge.

MaryDoll I am going to look at the site you recommended I think it was Otrium I am not bargain averse 🤣🤣🤣

Joseann Sun 02-Jul-23 16:08:29

Why would you Marydoll? !

But why would anyone do that?
We don’t know one another, and if we felt so inclined, we could just make things up anyway.

Marydoll Sun 02-Jul-23 16:08:19

Sara19, that is my greatest pleasure too. 😍

Really? I never thought of that!

Joseann Sun 02-Jul-23 16:07:17

Ooo dear. Part of me thinks that some people who post on GN are just looking for a disagreement over spending money on anything.
I asked for advice on a dress recently, but it didn't occur to me to mention the price. Someone else went and looked it up to broadcast it!
I posted about a ferry crossing to Padstow once and was accused of boasting and "showing off!" It was £3.50. So funny!

Poppyred Sun 02-Jul-23 16:02:55

Aw thank you for your kind words Janejudge.

I wasn’t raised in poverty, but we certainly never had much, but I think this has the opposite affect on me.
Now that I can afford it, I like buying nice things, and I love taking my grandchildren out and spoiling them.
I’m definitely not overly extravagant, but I enjoy buying things I’m going to get pleasure from.

Marydoll Sun 02-Jul-23 15:53:57

I have similar Sketchers ones, they make great slippers!

JaneJudge Sun 02-Jul-23 15:53:01

at the risk of being called frumpy, I love those pull on trainer things. I bought some nicer more feminine ones from next that they no longer do, a bit similar to this

Rightly or wrongly, my history has shaped my personality and character and I can see exactly why some posts about spending may upset those who have financial difficulties.
However, does that mean, that there cannot be posts like this, where people cannot post about their purchases?

I'm sure posters, (myself included) are naive/unaware that we appear to be boasting about our purchases/homes/gardens.
I just marvel every day at what I have achieved, but understand that given different opportunities, I may have been one of the posters who is upset by some of the posts here.

JaneJudge Sun 02-Jul-23 15:49:17

maximum I would spend is £40 on a t-shirt, £60 on a skirt, £50 on trousers, £80 0n knitwear, £100 + on a dress/coat/boots/shoes. I buy most my stuff in sainsburys tbh but I have a nice sea salt coat which was expensive but has never leaked and i walk the dog in all weathers. I bought some really nice boots in moshulu sale, which are really nicely made

I have too many clothes really as I am reminded often by he who has very little space in the wardrobe.

PS Poppred, I really felt for you grin I'm sure you will look lovely in your new outfit!

Callistemon21, I really like wearing boots with dresses - as it covers my tiny, skinny, frail-looking ankles and lower legs. I often wear trainers too, much more practical, comfortable and casual.

I did buy some rather more trendy trainers thinking they'd be ok with skirts but I've yet to wear them.
My friend once said thought I had a shoe fetish but no - I'm just forever trying to find a pair that are comfortable without being ugly!

Perhaps try Mephisto, cute and comfortable.

I am not criticising anyone's shopping patterns, least of all yours marydoll, but you have me over a barrel, because of your situation.

I just wish people could just discuss all sorts of things on GN without those who are not on the breadline constantly being snipped at because they are not poor enough to be virtuous.

Sara1954 Sun 02-Jul-23 15:37:44

Joseann
One of my granddaughters lived with us for a few years, with her mum and siblings, and I refused to buy her clothes from certain fashion online stores, mainly based in China, even though apparently, everyone bought clothes there.
Now a couple of years on, I’m happy to say she wouldn’t consider it.
Callistemon
I didn’t think you were being critical at all

Joseann Sun 02-Jul-23 15:08:59

I took my DGD aged 10 shopping yesterday because she wanted new clothes for her holiday. She is at that age, (you know!), where she is chosing for herself and forming an appreciation of fashion. I encouraged her NOT to look at the price tag, but to feel the fabric, consider how the fit suited her and equally important what accessories would complement it and picture where she would be wearing it. It was refreshing to shop with someone who had no true conception of value for money and who wasn't searching for bargains (--like her mum does--!)

I love my flip flops, and I’m not a trainer person, but last night one of my granddaughters had on a sweet little dress with trainers, and she looked lovely.

I'm not criticising btw, I just wish I could wear pretty shoes!!

Unfortunately, I probably wouldn't look as lovely as your DGD whatever I wear 🙂

Marydoll Sun 02-Jul-23 14:59:45

What a load of absolute nonsense. I find your comment is offensive. Monica. You are so totally wrong about me!

I am aware that I am probably at the end of my life, due to chronic ill health. I can no longer go on holiday, nor venture far from home. I have few pleasures left in life and will spend my time and cash the way I wish.

I am certainly not vituous, but will never forget the awful poverty of my childhood and how people sneered at me. DH and I often talk about those days (he was from a similar background) and are still surprised how fortunate we now are.

Shame on you! I 🤬

Norah Sun 02-Jul-23 14:57:27

M0nica, Why does everybody have to feel that to contribute to a thread like this, they should only do so if they can claim, they only buy in sales, or just from Charity shops or jumble sales.

Why can't we admit we buy new clothes at full price, do not haunt charity shops and wear garments for less than 25 years before passing them on to a worthy cause.

I'm not sure I read the same thread as you, M0nica.

I see posters who, wealthy or less well off, buy where they buy, at whatever price they choose to pay. Donate whenever they choose.

Myself, I don't donate many clothes as I never change size and my style is timeless classic not trendy glitz or sack of potatoes. That's neither good nor bad, I'm frugal as I ever have been.

Threads are boring if nobody shares.

Me too Mary, butI have found that when one says that someone says they worked at least as hard and have nothing to show for it. It’s sad but I have learned the hard way.
