Would you buy a dress you are unlikely to wear?

I saw a gorgeous dress that I really desired (my Mrs Harris goes to Paris moment🤣). It's not Dior price though), quite affordable but I can't see me being anywhere to wear it. I fear such occasions are behind me and it makes me very sad. I'm hoping on this thread there'll be others who feel like me & not telling me to stop being ridiculous, wasting money and get over the fact the fact that life has changed. I can't post a photo as I can't find it now but it has just left me longing for a lovely dress but knowing I'll never have any where to wear it.

I would buy it and wear it for Christmas with joy.. you'll look and feel fabulous.. and I bet your hubby might even take you out in it..

It's a tricky decision. I do sort of regret not buying it.....confused. Perhaps we should treat ourselves to some other little thing as consolation. grin

I would buy it too. It doesnt matter if you don't have anywhere presently to wear it, get it anyway. I saw a dress when shopping recently in Cambridge and thought l love that but l won't wear it.
I came home, told my friend, she said get it if you love it. I did and its so pretty and makes me feel good.
Go for it, live for the moment is my new motto.

Well, who knows - an occasion might suddenly come out of the blue.

I know what you mean though - I sometimes agonise over things I just know I won’t have the opportunity to wear, and eventually turn away. It’s taking a long time to recognise that my lifestyle now is very different to what it was, though I’m content with it.

Although it's a bit off-topic, for me, having some lovely clothes is a very pleasant feeling. I have no problems about wearing the same thing to different occasions. Someone I know (nice person, but not a great friend) was shocked that I would wear the same thing to 4 family weddings over the last 10 years, and another 2 due next year.
As I'm anonymous, I don't mind saying that the fabulous floaty top in the most beautiful hand painted fabric cost £400. I don't pay that sort of money not to wring every bit of pleasure out of it!
I was a bit too polite to ask how much she would spend on each outfit, that she won't wear again (though I do think she tries to sell them on), and frankly (as I'm anonymous) they looked rather 'ordinary' to me!

I bought a beautiful dress, reduced to £5 from hundreds of pounds. I had no idea where or when I would wear it. It was a work of art in my eyes. DH encouraged me to buy it.

It lay in the wardrobe for a couple of years, then my daughter was due to get married on the day after Lockdown and I had planned to wear it at the wedding. Obviously it never got worn.

Last year my son got married and encouraged by my daughter, I wore the dress to that wedding, receiving many compliments.

Absolutely yes! Provided it doesn’t bankrupt you, do it! Life is short and you should take pleasure and treat yourself if, & when, you afford to, but the dress and enjoy it x

Jaxjacky Mon 18-Dec-23 11:57:42

No, I wouldn’t, I last wore a dress (other than old summer floaty ones) nearly four years ago.
I couldn’t just buy something that wouldn’t be used.
But I’m not you, if you really yearn for it and can afford it, then buy it and enjoy.

Lovely posts MaryDoll and NannaRose.

I wore a dress to a party Saturday night which I bought 8 years ago. Wore it once before at a meal in a Spa Hotel 2 years ago. So Saturday was the 2nd time. Everyone says how lovely I looked it in.

So go for it, you never know when an occasion may arise to wear it.

The £5 dress! The photo doesn't do it justice. It was a silky brocade, with flecks of gold thread.

Theexwife Mon 18-Dec-23 12:41:40

I would buy it and then arrange an event to wear it.

I had a dress I bought just because it was lovely, never wore it, but I kept saving it for some event that never occurred I don't even know what it would have been suitable for. Hanging in the wardrobe for several years caused it to shrink so I sold it on Ebay for about the same as I paid for it.

gorgeous Marydoll.. I bet you feel wonderful in it..

Lovely dress marydoll. I didn't buy a dress which I had admired and often think of it. I could have worn it to a few occasions in the past so I would say if you can afford it buy it. At the time, I couldn't afford it

Oh, we’ve all had that happen!

grin and wink

I would buy it, if you really like it then it will bring you joy.

silverlining48 Mon 18-Dec-23 13:42:45

I paid £5 in an MandS outlet for a dress and shruggy jacket and wore it to a wedding. My daughters actually. Yes I know!

I now have 3 dresses for weddings , taking up wardrobe space, all worn just once, though the £5 one has been worn a few times.
As to buying another which may not be worn.?
No I wouldnt.

SueDonim Mon 18-Dec-23 14:24:01

If you love it and it wont break the bank, buy it.I wear dresses a lot ,in fact most of the time .My OH will steer me towards a dress he thinks would suit me when we go round the shops. It doesn't have to be an "occassion" to get dressed up a bit most things can be worn more casually .Enjoy its only money, and you cant take that with you when you die

Summerfly Mon 18-Dec-23 15:01:02

Suedonim 😱

Elegran Mon 18-Dec-23 15:44:49

Was it one of these? Perhaps you will find it again among them, then you'll be able to go for it!

It definitely wasn't a full ball gown, more of a cocktail dress I'd say. Fitted, lacy sleeves, midi length, I just wish I had somewhere to wear it 🤣

I would buy it and wear it to something.
Even if i had to investigate where I could wear it.

How often do we fall in love with something? Not very often I think.

Woollywoman Mon 18-Dec-23 16:18:19

Go for it! Life is short, as has already been said… Here’s hoping you buy it, and an occasion pops up sometime and you will be very pleased you bought it. She who hesitates…
If you had a wardrobe full of new things you don’t wear, that might be different, but it doesn’t sound like that’s the case?!

Norah Mon 18-Dec-23 16:40:52

I often buy clothing I don't need, not necessarily dresses as I wear the same ones -- but ski coats, how many can one skier use? Many yearly, apparently - don't ski better but I look good.

If you can afford it and love it - enjoy and find a use later.
