What shoes?

Im going on a cruise soon - not to a warm destination - and i’m struggling to find shoes to wear with ribbed tights & skirts/dresses. I’ve got ballet pumps & low heels neither look good. Don’t want to wear ankle boots.

I'll nominate ECCO for having a great range of 'trainers' (many would never go near a gym!), walking shoes, hiking shoes, and a pump or three. Many are leather, a few 'textile'.

In my experience their products are lovely and comfortable. Not cheap though.

Having been on a cool-weather cruise, I'd be wearing trousers!

A nice wedge shoe would work well. It will give a little height too.

Reiker have lovely styles but their boots are made of cardboard or something similar, not leather and let the rain in.

Joseann Thu 04-Apr-24 22:21:10

Rieker is a German company from the Black Forest. They started out maybe a century or more ago (?) making shoes for posh Italians.

I'm not being pernickety here, because I agree with 4allweknow, that Rieker outshines Hotter by far, but since it has been spelt back to front several times on this thread, the name is Rieker, not Reiker. When you go in the shop you need to ask for Reeeker (as in sneaker).

Doubt it will be cold onboard, only on deck, I've been to the Arctic a few times and Antarctica and wore cocktail dresses and skirts with normal tights and little tops in the evening with low heeled sling backs or smart trousers and loafers

sunglow12 Thu 04-Apr-24 21:10:03

I don’t really have a choice - it’s lace up ankle boots only !

4allweknow Thu 04-Apr-24 19:18:30

By chance I found a pair of Reiker patent and black leather slip on shoes. They have a wedge heel which really makes them stylish for wearing with skirts and dresses. Reiker also do a good range in trainers. I had never bought the make before but I'm a convert from Hotter now.

I like loafers too!

It’s true - that wearing ribbed tights might be the problem - go for opaque tights. Or just flesh colored tights for evening dress.

I’m not one for Mary Jane’s. They’re great for little girls.

What sort of a cruise is this ? The suggestions for shoes, ankle boots and ribbed tights don’t sound like suitable cruise attire. I have to say I have never been on a cruise but I imagine being smartly dressed and being the ship being warm when onboard.
I suppose if leaving on excursions in a cold climate you might need thick tights and boots.

Gundy Thu 04-Apr-24 18:58:50

jabbott Everything you listed that you have is exactly what works with ribbed tights.

Are you not seeing it?

What else is left? Sneakers? Espadrilles? Sandals? Crocs? NO!!

Try the ankle boot again, if you’re going to a cooler climate. Take along low heeled pumps.

Perhaps a wedge shoe. I find them hard to wear. Not for me.

DM, Mary Jane’s?

Ok I’m going to avoid the ribbed tights & go with opaque ones & a ballet shoe. Thanks for replies

Good choice.

Gabor do some lovely ballet pumps which look good with dresses for the evening. I think so anyway.

👍

I now wear trainer-type shoes almost all the time. Hotter have some good comfortable styles in leather with leather linings. They look modern with skirts and dresses. You can even get them in silver and gold for evening wear.

Heels have almost completely disappeared!

NannaFirework Thu 04-Apr-24 13:10:07

Trainers ?
Fitflop do hundreds of styles of shoes/sandals/ trainers etc
Have a good time when it comes around

Clarks do some lovely chunky brogues.

I clicked on your link and looked at wellies, have to admit, I laughed when I saw them.

Wear "wellies" like that On our land and you won't be On 2 feet for long!

I used to swear by dunlops (the basic type) but one winter, wearing a NEW pair, twice I slipped on wet grass ending on my back and each time the bloody sheep just standing looking at me. Don't know what annoyed me the most, sheep or wellies as now, like then, the blasted things eat out of my pockets, but no, mums on ground, we aren't going to see what's happened!

But I've upgraded, NoraTherm + wellies when outside, ankle support, comfortable, 1.2kg each I think and full safety! My Bekinas steplite I think they are (also full safety) for "popping to the shops" and when I can't be bothered to put my ankle boots on which are Amblers full safety!

Shoes? Don't own a pair. To be honest I'm no longer comfortable in any pair of shoes due to my foot so safety boots for me when out and about to keep everything strapped up, tight bound, perfect position etc. House is crocks to give my feet a rest.

I've tried lower walking boots but was advised biker style with as many laces to adjust as possible by therapist! Been in laces & zip option for couple of years now as forked out for a devine pair of COFRA Lexington boots, wow, comfortable or what!!! But to get them off in a hurry?

I ENVY people who can squeeze their feet into nice shoes whatever the style. Not me, never been me.

We’re thinking along the same lines hollysteers. I’m sure the OP’s ballet shoes and low heels only look wrong because of the choice of tights.

hollysteers Wed 03-Apr-24 16:33:53

I second black opaque tights. In the evening I wear them with black patent Clarks ballet shoes and I have detachable bows and diamond effect buckles I bought online.

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 03-Apr-24 16:17:36

But must you wear ribbed tights in the evening? I think that’s a big part of the problem.

jabbott Wed 03-Apr-24 16:13:10

V3ra sorry should have been clearer in original post it’s for evening wear hence dresses - live in jeans during day

annodomini Tue 02-Apr-24 23:35:22

My favourite shoes at the moment are trainer-style lace-up shoes with a side zip which means I only have to tie the laces once to make the shoes comfy and then just use the zip to put them on and take them off. I have two pairs, light grey and navy, both from Hotter. Of course, the really 'de rigeur' thing seems to be to wear white trainers for every possible occasion!
