The TuTu Skirt?

In the Guardian (5 April) there was a fashion item pointing up the latest trend in skirts: the TuTu Skirt, an adapted ankle length, chiffon, lightweight fabric affair, layered and NOT sticky-out like a traditional ballet skirt.

Hmmm.....can't see it making much impact among the masses unless the masses are 6' tall plus and as thin as a stick of celery. Certainly wouldn't work for me: 5'1" and dumpy Bramley apple-shaped! It looked ultra stylish on the model in the accompanying pic but she looked all of 21, size 4 and veering into the anorexic zone. No, no, no.

I agree, the shorty ones are more for fun and partying. Definitely for the young.
The longer ones are quite romantic in a way. Could be a wedding or cruise outfit?

The original classical tutu has a rather unfortunate etymology. It is thought to come from the French, and is a cheeky (!!) word for bum, bottom or arse! Cucu.

Here's a beautiful one!

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 11:25:51

Joseann, I adore that colour!

I love them and think they are so feminine (if that’s not a dirty word these days..)
In fact I have the beige and black spotted skirt upthread and a burgundy one I am wearing for music recitals. I wouldn’t go near a short one however!

The beige and black is beautiful Holly

I think there are quite a few catwalks coming back to this look Joseann - I also love the look to be honest.

Here are some tuile skirts on larger ladies:

I do think that if you are on the larger side (like me!!!) you have to choose much more carefully if you don't want to go "full apple" though! grin

Thought I'd just put a couple of photos here - this is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

The waist looks gathered and rather bunchy.

I had a lovely black chiffon skirt years ago, it wasn't gathered, but it was full at the hem, the hem was stiffened with something (soft wire?) So fell in soft waves.

I loved it.

I had a dress very similar to that, many sizes ago. I absolutely loved it and got so many compliments.
It cost me £10 in a sale!!!

Callistemon I also had a wired hem one years ago... 😍
In the days of cocktails and evening wear!

Yes some of these most certainly are a bit "bunchy" at the waist but I had an off the shoulder 2 piece once where the floaty skirt was on a basque and that was fabulous. Theh ard probably out there - just need to know where to look!

This thread is bad, very bad. It has set me off in search of a skirt. I've found a couple, one is actually Royal Academy, so I could tell DH I'm splashing out for my hobby!

NotSpaghetti Sat 06-Apr-24 12:06:57

Oooh. joseann
Yes.. it's a bad, bad, bad thread!
You 😈

Marydoll Sat 06-Apr-24 12:08:10

Now we need appropriate shoes to go with them. wink

MissAdventure Sat 06-Apr-24 12:08:50

Someone ought to buy the black one in NotSpaghetti's pictures.

I think they are lovely. I like the 3rd one and yes I would wear it.

Jaxjacky Sat 06-Apr-24 13:22:48

I would wear one if I was going somewhere that merited dressing up, unlikely in the near future. I do like that one Visgirl

Now therein lies the problem!

I don't look good in the long/not very puffy ones but I still have two, they are so comfy and oh well, I may as well live a little while I can!!

They are quite popular amongst the school run locally!

Gala Sat 06-Apr-24 18:25:40

I have a long cream one bought years ago for a wedding. I'm a week off 75, not as slim as I used to be & I still wear it..... not for the school run though.

Oh dear I love both of them 😱££££

BlueBelle Sat 06-Apr-24 18:56:10

Gosh I must be well out of order I think they re all awful I wouldn’t be seen dead in any of them even if I was young I wouldn’t want to have one

SueDonim Sat 06-Apr-24 19:06:09

I love that look and had similar skirts, way back when. Not sure about today, though! grin

AreWeThereYet Sat 06-Apr-24 19:30:18

Love the long ones, not the short, puffy ones. I wear mine with a vest, trainers and denim jacket in the Summer. Much cooler than jeans or shorts.
