Hi, I'm looking to update my winter wardrobe but I don't know where to start! In the winter months I usually opt for dresses, tights and boots but my old faithfuls have seen better days sad I'm 64 and I feel like the high street only caters to young ladies or ladies in later life, I want to feel great in what I wear. If anyone could share any recommendations for where to buy comfortable and casual but stylish dresses, it would be much appreciated

Bit late and you’re probably sorted but Next on line is fantastic as they carry loads of other stockists like Whitestuff , Seasalt, Fatface , Roman , Joules. You order through next and return to them too and it’s usually next day delivery and free if you do click and collect.

Sainsburys TU range also carry other brands like Sosander and Finery London and so do M&S and John Lewis, who price match. Whitestuff currently have a sale on but did t have my size. Was able to get the dress same price in JL.

It’s called White Stuff meaning ‘snow’ rowyn. The founders sold self-designed t shirts to fund their snow boarding lifestyle in the Alps.

I personally love www.beachcafe.com/ and although they are 'beach dresses' they have some fab long sleeved dresses which are super comfy to throw on and around this time of year i find what I order from them is quite thick so perfect for winter xxx

The problem with shopping in charity shops, is that you have to be the sort of person who buys clothes at random as and when you see something they like.

If, like me, your clothes buying is very focussed, for example I am currently looking for a good quality winter coat, dark grey, mid calf, unbelted, in a size 12, then the chances you will find exactly what you want in charity shop, unless you are prepared to visit hundreds of them, are, regrettably, very low indeed.

This not to say that I do not look round charity shops and occasionally buy something. If I see something I like, I am unlikely to buy it unless I can see exactly when and where I will wear it and whether it will fill an existing gap in my wardrobe.

This is a good point, M0nica - and while there are people who can sniff out exactly what they need/suits them/fits them, sadly I am not one. I also find it very hard to “see” what I like in a crowded environment hence sales shopping is usually disastrous. Two of my DD’s are brilliant at finding designer items at the likes of TKMaxx, too but I have never had any luck.

I have just ordered this White Suff dress. I have difficulty dressing and this one pulls on easily. I have several others in the same style. I will wear it with boots and opaque tights.

The bonus was, as a regular customer, I got 25%off new stock. There is 20%off today.

I like the colours and prints for Autumn and will add a cardigan for the coldest Winter months. Am in my 60's

I popped into my favourite cancer charity shop yesterday with a few things to donate and found a lovely Wallis dress which fitted me perfectly ( it doesn’t often happen) for a mere £5. Double bubble everyone wins. Delighted. 😀

This is great! A great find !

Fatface for me; I have 8 or 9 of their dresses...
Also have a look at Live UK, available in John Lewis or on line.

My mother had a grey checked one like that in the late fifties. It would be so fashionable today!

MaryDoll I love that coat.

I always thought that a swagger cost was a flared hip-length one - or so DM used to say.

A swagger coat.

Monica, yes, I’m talking summer dresses, I bought three similar one year, probably eight to ten years ago, still worn regularly.
To be honest, everything I’ve bought there, not a huge amount, a few tops, a jacket, seem good quality, but they have yet to stand the test of time.

Toast is pricey, but it lasts forever, so not a bad investment, as long as you don’t get fed up with it

I stopped buying from Toast because I had several very poor quality garments from them. One corderoy top looked like a damp rag after only a few months. At which point I saw an almost identical garment in the late lamented M&Co for a third of the price, bought it and wore it for several years. I would probably be wearing it still if I hadn't got a blob of bleach central front.

On the other hand I bought 2 summer night dresses from them and they are going strong after 10 years

JamesandJon A swagger coat flairs out from the shoulders so that it has a very wide hem and the coat has a movement of its own. You can swagger about in it with the fabric spinning out from your body.

JamesandJon33 Tue 17-Sept-24 05:41:33

What is a ‘swagger’ coat then? I think , as a child, I had one of those, but I can’t remember the style .

If it buttons all the way down, you could double up and use it as a duster coat.

What’s a duster coat?

A trench coat is usually tailored for a snugger fit, especially in the waist, and often features a belt, while a duster has a looser design, and is often worn unbuttoned.
