Is it me, or is this a pretty ghastly look? Even if you’re young?

I noticed recently on the One Show that Davina McCall was wearing ankle socks, and presenter Anita Rani later in the week was also wearing them. Is that the fashion now, short skirts and socks?

Great! I am 83 and have had to resort to ankle socks for the sheer comfort. To be told I could be in fashion is going to put a spring in my steps.

Well, I think she looks good. Especially the jacket!

I remember far worse in the 70,s and 80,s but it was what we wore even though our parents hated it.My uncle told me my GF would be ashamed to see me wearing patchwork jeans and tiny suede patchwork skirts…it was the fashion .My GF used to custom make his children’s clothes he was a master tailor ,patchwork was only worn by poor people!

But the wholepoint of being young is doing and wearing things your parents disapprove of.

For me it was very short skirts and thick black tights. 'dressd like a student' said my mother with disgust. I pointed out that I was a student. Well, you are not dressing like that when you are at home, she said - and I took no notice of her and dressed as I wished.

But it was totally different from the awful school uniform.
This isn't.

I remember my friend throwing her hat into the river on the day we left school.
It floated away downstream
I expect my Mum put mine in the bin.

Of course it's horrible. For us. We are GN not teens.

I think my teenage DGDs would snigger at that outfit.

Deedaa Sun 15-Sept-24 20:51:32

I've just bought a pair of wide leg, off white trousers in M & S but usually I just walk through the clothes section now. If I want something interesting I go and search eBay for Joe Browns.

I think she looks perfect.

Yep. Some great music but mainly awful clothes.

I think this is a popular Japanese look. similar to clothes from Uniqlo

A matter of personal taste, not mine.
On the whole M&S have really upped the ante and I’m really enjoying a lot of things from them currently.

Farzanah Sun 15-Sept-24 19:36:02

I remember stiff crinkly petticoats and full skirts GG and Bobby Socks.

Baggs

When I was younger, only schoolchildren and slightly weird people wore ankle socks. Now everyone wears them.

Young women wore them in the forties/fifties, I believe.

Definitely they were called Bobby Socks came over from America along with the full skirts and petticoats.

Nooooooo, please ditch the jacket ❌

In Oxford I regularly see Japanese girls who are dressed similarly to the young lady in the Marks and Spencer advertisement.
I find M&S are excellent for denim jeans and a wide range of trousers. Both for summer and winter wear.
They also have a range of attractive, quality shoes. I have two pairs of shoes which never fail to draw compliments. When I say they are from Marks and Spencer people are astonished because the shoes look so expensive.

Marg75 Sun 15-Sept-24 17:15:13

I wear ankle socks with jeans but not with a short skirt smile

It’s the Japanese schoolgirl look which men in Japan really go for! Not so sure about in the West tho.
The models for M&S are made to look even more strange than for any other fashion store. Usually hulkingly tall, completely flat chested and adopting gawky poses. If showing off a dress it looks five sizes to large and the model wears bovver boots with it.

Thinking about the implications of that, should M&S be encouraging a fashion like that?

Rarely buy anything from MandS their clothes have never floated my boat

BlueBelle Sun 15-Sept-24 16:34:38

Gold and brown look much better than Gold and black the model is looking very bored and underwhelmed and sulky which wouldn’t make many people warm to the advert whatever age ! the bow is horrid never seen any of my fashionable grandkids in anything like that

Dinahmo Sun 15-Sept-24 16:19:07

Our generation is gradually dying out. They need to attract younger people. There are plenty of other suppliers of clothing which attracts the older generation. In fact many of them are non-generational.

Marg75 Sun 15-Sept-24 16:18:47

Oreo Hence the ankle socks I mentioned in my post earlier!
