Is it me, or is this a pretty ghastly look? Even if you’re young?

OMGos..I'm glad seone else has brought this up..I saw this picture last week, and I was absolutely stunned. I'm fed up for the most part looking at Big store models who look as miserable as sin in the clothes they are modelling, but this one in M&S..completely took me aback..Totally Alien looking, far too skinny and too young..if in fact it;s supposed to be an adult woman... and utterly miserable. The idea of models in catalogues and Websites is for us to see ourselves in thhe clothing the are wearing.. when you see someone who looks utterly miserable the last thing you want is to buy what they are wearing..

Not for me either. The outfit reminds me of some of the garments from 'Dress the Nation' made in partnership with M&S

Just no

I wish we still had M&S here; I remember my mum stocking up on staples (underwear and tights!) for us back in the 60's.

Unfortunately over the years they grew with that same demographic, and did not do much to keep up with the latest trends, or cater to a younger generation. In 2020 they had their first loss of profit in over 90 years, so they need to do some drastic re-structuring.

They opened up to selling third party brands, and got rid of some of their in-house brands. They have re-vamped their looks to gain a market share of a younger demographic while still delivering what the older generation expects.

Their sales have increased 50% over the last three years, telling that their new strategy is working. here's an article.

Even if you don't like the look of the clothes or model in the ad, I think most of you could still find clothing that would appeal to you, at a decent price. We can order on-line here, but shipping costs are too much, and there are return fees, so I haven't ordered, although I do look at their site from time to time, and I see quite a few items that are on trend but wearable for me in my 60's.

The jacket and skirt are OK but a white jacket would look better. A colourful blouse is needed it looks odd with that one

SparklyGrandma Mon 23-Sept-24 11:54:12

Terrible. The jacket looks like the inside of a freezer bag.

Nil points, M&S.

Having been in M&S today, a very large store, I can reassure you that whatever they show in their adverts their clothes in their shops remain as dull as they ever were.

Allira Sat 21-Sept-24 19:51:15

It's just rather boring.

Oldnproud Sat 21-Sept-24 18:56:19

I think it's safe to say that the outfit isn't meant to appeal to our demographic, and that if it did, it would almost certainly be a total flop with its intended market. That's fashion for you.

I still remember what my parents and grandparents thought of the 1970s fashions aimed at my generation, and I can imagine how horrified I would have been at the time if they had bought any of those outfits to wear themselves. 😂

Wasn't it the last M&S thread where lots of people said the model in the ad was awful and didn't like that she was so happy and dancing around to music???

Maybe M&S read it and put a serious face on this one.

She looks great. 8 billion people in the world - thank goodness we don’t all want to look the same.

I think she looks great too..

It’s the Japanese schoolgirl look which men in Japan really go for! Not so sure about in the West tho.
The models for M&S are made to look even more strange than for any other fashion store. Usually hulkingly tall, completely flat chested and adopting gawky poses. If showing off a dress it looks five sizes to large and the model wears bovver boots with it.

Quite! And when will people realise we are in th UK, not Japan! Too many models nowadays are foreign and tall and thin. When will stores realise that few of us are like that!

The model and the outfit reminds me of the school girl assassin character 'Gogo Yubari' from Kill Bill'! Absolutely awful!

😂 yes!

Nannimo Mon 16-Sept-24 21:08:10

I would ignore them all . I am sick n tired of fashion houses telling me what I should wear ! Just because they want to sell you stuff . Head over to you tube n watch Melissa Murrell giving sensible pointers as to what you could wear to flatter your figure .
She gives sound advice on what to look for depending on your shape . Yes she does post links to her shopping list but she gives all sorts of price points from high end to basic high street. And she has master classes on what to wear for your body shape . It’s taught me a lot about not buying on impulse and actually planning a wardrobe . Check it out !

Well, I love it. Both myself & my son wear just what we like. My son has pink & green hair & he drives massive lorries & wears pink t-shirts. We both love a bit OTT style.grin

Jennerdysphoria Mon 16-Sept-24 20:21:26

I don't aim to follow fashion when I buy, but the impression I have from the slumped, sulky models and clothes displayed is a message of "Anything goes, the looser, bulkier and odd-looking the better". Or, as Melania Trump literally signalled on her coat "I really don't care". I was puzzled by that, but maybe this is the answer.

Ilovedogs22 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:57:47

Sorry got confused & answered myself!!!!!grin

Ilovedogs22 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:53:27

Agree 👍

Ilovedogs22 Mon 16-Sept-24 19:52:23

Agree, a cool, super cool look. 😎

I think it’s fine. Everyone has their own taste. We express ourselves through what we wear.

sunglow12 Mon 16-Sept-24 18:47:11

I won’t be buying it - even if it turns up in a charity shop in years to come !

I think it looks fine. Can we maybe not waste time and energy criticising outfits that others might like?

No one is wasting time or energy - just having a simple vote of Like It or Don't Like It. Just as you would when looking at a piece of art. Fashion is art.
