Instant coffee….advice needed.
I am starting yoga in the New Year and don't know what to wear.
I did yoga many years ago but at that time we wore leotards and black tights. There is so much exercise wear that I am confused. I had thought to wear leggings and loose t shirt. Also, should I wear trainers or socks? I have a yoga mat.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

T shirt and leggings, something comfortable because you will be stretching.
I get my leggings for yoga from Sports Direct, cheap & cheerful but they do the job. I wear a fairly loose t shirt & a sweatshirt to start with then peel the latter off as the class goes on. Definitely bare feet! Of course, we do have ladies in the class with amazing matching sets, pristine hair & beautiful make up but most of us are just normal!
Leggings and a t shirt or yoga pants, Sainsbury have nice black ones. Anything loose and casual

Definitely leggings and long or short sleeved T-shirt.,
I wear a cardigan or light jumper over them if it’s cold and take of if it gets too warm.
Definitely no socks until relaxation.
Your feet need to grip the mat,
I wear joggers and a lacy sleeveless vest I can tuck into them underneath a looser larger t-shirt. Comfortable and discreet for the older, fatter lady. But I do very gentle yoga for chronically ill yogis.
Bare feet, so you don't slip. Non-slip yoga mat if possible. High waisted yoga leggings are my faves as you hardly know you have them on. For the top half, I wear a short sleeved tee with a warmer, long sleeve top over the top of it until I've warmed up, then remove it until savasana when I don it again along with warm socks. I also take a blanket and a pillow (again for savasana) and blocks to help me reach some poses, not forgetting water to be sipped throughout. Have a great time. I live for yoga!

Hi Mazgg, I would suggest something stretchy, comfortable & washable too ( you can get a bit sweaty -Betty after downward-
dogging!). Buy yoga clothes that make you feel like a Goddess and fit well. Above all avoid the the dreaded 'Camel toe '!!!!
Also, be prepared to be outdone by a couple of ladies who always seem to turn -up at these things!! Who seem to know absolutely blooming everthing & never, ever fart doing some of the more vigorous moves. 😊
This made me laugh. I was doing a 3 hour yoga workshop and we were finishing with a long period of 'legs up the wall'. Coming down I trumpeted into the high ceilinged hall. I laughed but nobody seemed to have noticed!

Leggings and loose T shirt fine. I also have some yoga non slip socks (very cheap on Amazon) which help. Enjoy yoga - I love it!
Do try and find high waisted leggings to buy before you start your classes …..I find when I wear regular waisted leggings I am continually tugging them up after many of the poses. And loose fitting tee shirts and tops don’t work either because they slid up and engulf you when doing the downward dog pose. Wearing clothing that gives you freedom of movement for wearing for yoga definitely doesn’t mean loose and baggy.
Have been to yoga for over thirty years.The secret is to be as comfortable as possible.I wear a pair of soft pull on yoga pants and wear a baggy cotton tee shirt- short sleeved when it’s warm and three quarters sleeves when it’s cold.Bare feet in summer and comfortable socks in winter.
I make sure I have leggings which don't fall down and a top/ t shirt which doesn't ride up.
I have a long vest which I wear under my t-shirt.
I often get cramp in my legs and tonic water with quinine not gin
was suggested to drink not to rub on
I prefer bare feet and a non slip mat.
Luckily our village hall has a heated floor.

If you’re not wanting to spend a lot of money until you know you like the classes, have a look in the major supermarkets or Matalan they usually start to stock sportswear at this time of year. As some of the major brands such as sweaty-betty or Luke lemon and Nike can be quite expensive.

You should wear whatever you feel comfortable in but it needs to be practical for doing the actual postures.
In yoga you can warm up and then cool down so take a couple of teeshirts that you can add and take off as necessary.
Agree long tee shirts are best so can be tucked in.
You need to concentrate on the postures themselves so for inverted postures something (a long trouser?) with elasticated ankles to preserve modesty?
Take spare warm socks to keep your feet warm when you do a cool-down /relax at the end. Also a blanket as someone else has suggested.
My last teacher swore by modern cotton pyjama bottoms and a tee-shirt.
That's more or less what I've always worn.
I've bought the yoga socks from Amazon as you suggested. They fit very snuggly so should be fine. I like the cross over elastic fronts.

I agree with others that the t-shirt cannot be too loose or it will ride up when doing downward dog. For now you can tuck one side into your leggings, or tie a knot in the bottom to snug it up a bit.
If you enjoy the classes, and I hope you do, then later on treat yourself to a new top and perhaps sports bra. They are generally designed to firmly support the breasts and stop any slippage of straps. Nothing more distracting than slipping bra straps and t-shirts coming over your head!
I love yoga and try to maintain 3 x per week at home with on-line class. It helps with strength, balance, flexibility and mental awareness.
A t-shirt and leggings are fine, but now it's winter I usually wear a loose jumper with my leggings, or a cardigan over the t-shirt
Also if you have cold feet, you can get yoga socks (from Amazon) which have little non-slip spots on the soles, a thinner version of slipper socks.
My DD2 teaches yoga and I have been to some of her classes. What you suggest will be fine. We often start with socks on, but they may come off as we warm up. Before winding down we can put socks and layers back on to be comfortable. The lovely thing about yoga is that it’s non judgmental and you do whatever is best for you. I hope you enjoy it.
If the t shirt is too loose it may lift as you bend etc. make sure it is long enough that when your arms are raised it doesnt expose your torso.
Easy and comfortable is the way to go.
Leggings and a top will be fine. You might wear socks but most yoga teachers encourage bare feet.
