What is the oldest thing in your wardrobe that you still wear?

I went to a party yesterday lunchtime, and wore a silk embroidered Chinese jacket that I bought in Hong Kong 33 years ago (I know the age, because my daughter was with me, in a pushchair at the time). It got me thinking, and I realised it is the oldest clothing item I own that I still wear, I’m usually quite ruthless. Has anybody else got anything you bought years ago that you still wear and love?

I have a blue panne velvet evening dress I bought for a school dance when I was 17. And a black cashmere polo neck, sleeveless column evening dress from Jaeger that I wore with black over-the-elbow gloves. Love these dresses, I can still fit in them, tho admittedly less ‘lissom’ than I was, but then I’m 72!

I still have my Laura Ashley going away outfit from 1989, which I wore to a few weddings later on. Sadly, I was much smaller then and it wouldn't go near me now. In recent years, l have bought some vintage St. Michael jumpers and cardigans on Ebay and Vinted. They are such good quality and as stylish as ever.

Navy wool coat bought from M and S for a niece's wedding. They've just celebrated 35 years of marriage. Was quite astonished when I realised how old the coat was.

My dressing gown. I bought it over 34 years ago.

I have a Wallis leather zip up parker style coat which I bought in Debenhams about 30 years ago. I still wear it occasionally. I also have a dark purple swirlish design ski jacket which I bought when my two children were in primary school so that is about 33 years old. It has no zip or buttons to do up it just pulls on over the head. It is so warm. I just wonder how much I have spent over the years on clothes that I no longer have.

I have two striped long sleeved tops, one blue and black the other black and white. They are older than the DCs, about 48 years old I reckon. They are a bit faded but wearing well.

My graduation dress, worn in 1968. I made it myself out of Swiss embroidered cotton. I was incredibly slim then, so I can only hold it up in front of me now.

A St Michaels ( before it became M & S ) cotton dressing gown purchased around mid 1980s .
Sadly , it's a size or two smaller than I am these days , but still fine for the summer months .

I have a pair of Biba boots which were bought for my 16 birthday in 1975. I can wear them, but I don’t want to ruin them after all these years

Forgot all about my sheepskin jacket - also a 21st birthday present in 1972.
My red wedding dress of the same year is still here, but that doesn’t fit either!

I have a long black velvet off the shoulder evening dress my mother wore in the 1930s but she was a lot thinner (and taller) than me - so it sits on a hangar waiting for a suitable new home. Boned bodice and all.

I can’t remember exactly how old probably about 33-40 years a multistriped 3/4 length sleeved cardigan from M&S which is quite shabby but SO soft and comfy, can only wear it really in the house now for shames sake but I still love it (I had another in a different colourway but that’s long gone)

Younger but still fairly old a peach coloured linen shift dress that I still wear every summer although it’s very faded from much washing . This I remember was £10 from Asda. The quality was much better than some more expensive shops.

My oldest was a knitted tank top Clothkits, that I bought for less than a £ in a charity shop in 1979. But I finally got fed up of it & sold it a couple of months ago on Vinted for £10. (It's too trendy for me now). It's been washed & washed & washed! I have a white linen shirt that's 30 years old & still wear it for best.

My genuine sheepskin 3/4 length coat bought in the January sales in 1968. It's so warm and still fits.

I have a tea towel which I bought for my mother in law nearly 50 years ago .
It has the flowers of the Holy Land and biblical quotes.
It's full of holes , but I can't throw it away .

I still have my favourite Winter coat from M&S that has a size 16 label and I know for a fact that I am NOT a size 16 anymore. I deliberately bought it too big at the time too. Its at least 20 years old and possibly 25 and it still has room to wear a thick jumper underneath. I tried to replace it several years ago and also last year but in order to get the same fit I would have to buy at least a size 24.

I have 3 t-shirts and an alpaca cardigan bought on my trip to Peru over 20 years ago. I buy t's as souvenirs on my trips so I know how old they are. Getting rather a big pile now

Probably, my black velvet Donna Karan evening coat. I only wear it during the Christmas / New Year´s Holiday Season ..

It is quite well cared for and looks brand new.

W winter coat which I urchased 35 years ago, still like new, you get what you pay for.

I have lost a lot of weight in the last couple of years and am now wearing some items that I thought would never see the light of day again. I also have a black cardigan with some beading on, bought when I was in my first job after uni. It's a bit bobbly and too small to fasten up, even if it still had all its buttons but I wear it regularly. I'm retired now so I guess it's over 40 years old!

My academic gown bought on 1991 which is far longer ago than I like to think

Ladyripple Sun 02-Mar-25 22:01:46

A sheepskin jacket my parents bought me for my 21st in 1969.My daughter has also worn it.

Marg75 Sun 02-Mar-25 21:52:47

Talking of wedding dresses earlier, I have mine from 1968 and my Mum's from 1940.
