HOW MUCH DO YOU TIP YOUR HAIRDRESSER?

Two threads today about hairdressers reminds me that I keep meaning to ask on here about tipping. I always feel I should but am never sure how much. I never give less than £5 but if I've spent £80+ for colours etc, it makes it a very expensive visit. The salon is small and friendly and my usual hairdresser is lovely - good chat and useful advice. Do people have a set amount? Or work out a percentage as we sometimes do with restaurant bills? Or not at all? Or does it depend on how pleased you are with the result?!

I have very short hair.
Use a Barbers
She is the only person I’ve found who will cut my hair as I like it
£16 every 4 weeks
I don’t tip 😊

My hairdresser is very well off judging by house, car and holidays. My need is greater than hers. 🙂

Gummie Sun 07-Sept-25 15:25:36

Nothing. I pay the required price for whatever treatment I had.

I don’t tip my hairdresser. I’m already paying her to do my hair. She doesn’t tip me for teaching her grandchildren or for running a free computer club that they enjoy, so I reckon we’re quits.

Robin so do I.

I have a salon owner do my hair so I don’t tip.

I don’t tip much, certainly not hairdressers. Aussies don’t tip much, we are a tight fisted lot that way. The wages are quite high ,though, unlike America where they rely on tips.

Do you cut it yourself? That must be difficult.

I don’t. I haven’t been to the hairdresser since lockdown. I used to pay £50 for cut and blow dry and give a £5 tip. Now I have long hair and more money to spend on other things.

I very seldom go to a hairdresser, why should you leave a tip when you,ve paid for the hair cut. who tips the postman, delivery driver ect.

I tip the postman at Christmas and the refuse collectors. My hairdresser gets £5 usually but a little more if my bill is higher. Last month she was very excited about her new house on which she was about to complete so I gave her a Dunelm voucher as I'm very fond of her.

£5 on top of the £55 bill. I wouldn't normally tip the owner of the salon but she was my hairdresser and she then bought the business and don't like to stop. I'm happy with the service.

£5 .

I stopped tipping years ago when prices got to the ridiculous level. I now pay £42 for a cut and blow dry which although less than some gransnetters here, I think is still a lot. Gransnetters, where are all your cheap hairdressers?!
Nobody ever tipped me as a legal secretary - nor did I expect it!

Chardy Sat 06-Sept-25 20:11:41

Between 10% and 25%

Eloethan Sat 06-Sept-25 20:03:27

My hairdresser is quite expensive but I still tip 10%.

Skydancer Sat 06-Sept-25 18:40:07

Nothing. Mine only takes cash. Hmm.

Oreo Sat 06-Sept-25 18:39:31

10% always.

I’ve never tipped the hairdresser and can’t understand why people do this. It’s their job and they set the price so why should customers pay more?

I don’t routinely tip the window cleaner, gardener, cleaner or podiatrist so why is hairdressing special?

You are absolutely right! BUT……my problem is that my hairdresser is the salon owner. I have been going to her for about 25 years and have always tipped. Now I understand I shouldn’t have.
My question is, how on earth can I stop now after all these years?

I tip my hairdresser £5 for a cut £10 for cut and colour. He is lovely, does my hair exactly as I want it and makes me free coffee. I also give him a bottle of wine at Xmas

rafichagran Sat 06-Sept-25 17:40:10

£55, home hairdresser, cut and high lights, every 7 weeks. I make coffee and snack and give £5 tip plus extra £10 at Christmas. She is very good.

SusieB50 Sat 06-Sept-25 17:25:48

I have my hair cut and blow dried at home, I wash it before using my shampoo and hot water and she blow dries it using my electricity. She’s with me for about 45 minutes and asks me to pay cash £40 . She also had a number of us in the same close vicinity. So no I don’t tip I think she earns enough tax free !

Mel1967 Sat 06-Sept-25 17:14:13

I don’t tip mine

Usedtobeblonde Sat 06-Sept-25 17:12:23

I hate, hate, hate the card reader system now where a tip is suggested.
It usually starts at twelve and a half per cent going up to 20.
Sheer cheek is my opinion.

Reading this i feel that I under tip I have a cut and colour every 6 weeks costing £115. I have short hair and I notice that when I come to pay the card reader first asks how much i want to tip in amounts of £10 upwards. I have always given her £5. I also always have a conditioner treatment. Am I being ripped off?

Depends where you live and the level /seniority of the stylist?
Mine is £138 every 6 weeks for cut, half head colour /highlights. I have been going to this Hair group for about 25 years, and get a loyalty discount.
I give her £5 as tip.
