What is it with British men in hot weather?

I was driving through town this afternoon, and as the traffic was queueing, I noticed what everybody was wearing on this beautiful sunny day. Most women looked smart, and as if they had dressed for the weather, but oh dear, the men. Some with no tops and their belly over their trousers, some with too tight nylon sports tops, some with what looked like their football shorts on with a long sleeved shirt. Suit wearers had taken their jackets and ties off, and had their long sleeved shirts loose. I didn’t see even one who looked half decent, no chinos, short sleeved shirts, tailored shorts, polo shirts, or sandals without socks to be seen. I think I live in a male style desert.

Even if we had long summers, I doubt whether British men could be even bothered to smarten up.
The young women are just as bad, I hate seeing overweight women in leggings, jeggins or whatever they are- not a good look. Or those nude coloured, skintight leggings, I thing they look vulgar.
Woman who are dressed head to foot in designer brand logos is another bug bare.
No the Italians can give us a run for our money for sure.

Agreed by the bucket load!

And may I add to your list: tattoo overload and nose rings plus multiple eyebrow piercings.

witzend yes thst is correct, and true it seemed to me if many Italian men.

When working, I met my equivalent in many European countries, and the Italians were outstandingly well dressed with what was clearly beautiful quality, including their brief cases.

Milan is, indeed, the beating heart of Italy’s fashion industry and if money isn’t spent there on looking groomed, stylish and well turned out - including in the heat - then there’s not much hope!

The problem for hot weather or summer dressing by those who aren’t used to regular sunny days seems to be that those from colder or rainy climes don’t understand the concept of dressing for the heat, only undressing. This is possibly why often so many look sweaty, unkempt and a hot mess!

If the weather is very hot, surely most guys/men could start the day with a shower, then locate a pair of linen or cotton shorts, similar fabric short-sleeved shirt and some leather sandals or very clean trainers, properly applied sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat - especially those with no hair!

What seems to happen is a haphazard choice of clothing, heat is always a surprise, so synthetic fabrics, sleeves rolled up or too small tee shirt exposing bellies and backsides, or revolting soon-to-be-sweaty vests, no sunscreen and red skin. Shoes? Well, boots or flip-flops, maybe. Who cares?

As the heat increases, various items are then removed until big pasty bodies are bare and obvs decreed as highly appropriate to flaunt all over town!

Dress appropriately, chaps! And when the heatwave strikes, show a little respect for your fellow citizens, please. Save the semi-naked show for the beach, maybe, when you can attempt to dress appropriately.

All our summer residents here are reminded that they will have to leave shops, banks, supermarkets etc., if they turn up in swimwear or topless. However, if tourists want to wear absolutely nothing at all, it’s only a short stroll to one of the biggest Naturist beaches in Europe.

While I would never presume to tell somebody else what to wear in hot weather to be comfortable (or at any time) there is a tendency amoung some men to strip to the waist and strutt around as if their white, flabby, tattooed bodies are attractive. Fear not. Tomorrow, they will have a bad case of sunburn and/or heatstroke and spare us from a repeat performance.

Spot on, its nice to see a nice body, but the ones who strip off oh dear me.

whats OK - younger men in decent shorts an T shirts, large flabby men in comfy chinos or at least good quality long shorts, and big big lose shirts.

Yes the Lauren men are yummy, but you have to be a model like that and slim...

I have a neighbour who struts around without a top on all the time,a revolting sight.

Compare that with say Milan.

No contest!!

I know what you mean, but….

A DD’s Italian boyfriend once told me that in an Italian workplace you are judged largely - if not mostly - by what you wear. He said they will size up the brand/cost of everything you have on, ‘…even your belt.’ And it needs to be premium labels - the likes of M&S will not do.

I thought he must surely be grossly exaggerating, so some time later I asked a young Italian colleague of dh whether it was true.

He said yes, absolutely.

I don't find men walking around with nothing on top at all acceptable...if I were PM I'd make it illegal!

windmill1 Wed 18-Jun-25 23:38:49

Oh yes, sadly. The first sign of sunshine - at any time of year - and British men's sense of style goes out the window, and it isn't brilliant to begin with.

So many favour those appalling Cargo Shorts, ultra-baggy three quarter length shorts, usually in a drab and washed out khaki, with pockets all over. Very much favoured by distinctly out-of-shape blokey's, the waistband either balanced on top of their beer gut or tucked underneath, with hairy little legs poking out and topped off by the scruffiest trainers.

And, it goes without saying, these guys obviously don't believe in ironing anything. I can only suppose they think that Real Men Don't Do Ironing.

Let's not forget, how could we, the ever-present Baseball cap.

British men, in warmer weather, display their "take-me-as-I-am" attitude via their sartorial laziness and boorish ignorance. They truly look as if they dressed in whatever happened to be lying on the bedroom floor when they rolled out of bed in the morning.......

The only place DH wears shorts is on the beach - and we are talking swimming shorts. He is short in the leg and as shorts make most short legged men look squat, he sticks to trousers.

hollysteers Wed 18-Jun-25 20:47:16

It’s difficult for people in this country to dress stylishly in the summer as our weather is not only so uncertain, but not warm for long periods like Latin countries.
We tend to grab what comes to hand (layers, umbrellas and white cardigans).
Temperamentally too, our nature seems averse to peacocking, mores the pity.

CanadianGran Wed 18-Jun-25 20:45:52

When we were on holidays in Spain last year, I suggested to DH that loose button up short sleeve shirts were nicer and more comfortable than a t-shirt, also that tank tops (sleeveless) are more meant for along the beach, not in town.

What I hate are the very loose tank tops with wide openings for arms that show off men's nipples and hairy underarms.

I think what we call tank tops you would call vests. Perfectly fine for around the yard, pool or beach, but not really for town. In my opinion, anyway.

We moved recently and one thing I won’t miss is my neighbour a perfectly pleasant retired teacher who thought it was acceptable to wander around topless, he even went to the supermarket topless

Casdon Wed 18-Jun-25 20:19:58

Your small local town won’t be dissimilar in demographic to mine M0nica. In fairness it was mid afternoon and very warm, so there were fewer older people out and about than there usually are, on the whole they are smarter, even though they wear socks and sandals.

Italian men have a real talent for looking smart whatever they wear, don’t they. It’s clothes (and bodies) that just don’t fit any more that let British men down most I think. I suspect they are blissfully oblivious too, so I don’t hold out much hope for change.

Yes, like the women, they have a style that is cool and relaxed but oh so sexy.

Tbh you can always tell a British person by the way that they dress when abroad.

They just don’t seem to get it somehow. I’m including myself in that. What I feel very happy about in the U.K. I feel totally different when I see Italian women. So put together and understated.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 18-Jun-25 20:15:43

Chap across the road had on shorts today, T-shirt and hat, but he was gardening.

Dressing appropriately is key I think.

Mind you, the only time my DH wears shorts is near the equator😄😊

I was in my local small town today and all the men seemed to be dressed as normal. Certainly nothing to attract adverse attention. As far as I can remember, shirts or T shirts on top, mainly trousers, but a few in shorts below.

As I said above, I suspect that what men are wearing is immensely variable. I will have a look again tomorrow as I go round Waitrose.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 18-Jun-25 20:07:37

I reckon the Milanese men take a lot of beating.

Gucci more like! 🇮🇹

Silverbrooks Wed 18-Jun-25 19:32:50

The connection was linen and how good men look in it.

I've been in Milan many times in summer. The men always look cool and elegant.

Handsome Milanese men in linen suits
Ralph Lauren.

I think Ralph Lauren is American. The RL models in that collection have been working for years with the company, not sure about the Milanese connection?

Here in France, 33 degrees today, not seen one man without a top. DH wore a white Charles Tyrwhitt polo and beige shorts.

I absolutely hate seeing men in public with no shirts on……..by the pool it’s ok, on the beach perfectly acceptable BUT walking the streets, in shops, in pubs, in cafes it looks dreadful. I haven’t been to Europe recently but I do recall that in France, men have to wear a shirt/tee shirt everywhere in public.

It is not a nation wide law. Each municipality can make their own ruling.

Another one here who can't bear to see overweight men with no tops on walking through town. Yuk!

My DH wore a turquoise polo shirt, navy chinos and navy deck shoes today and a looked smart, he's always been very well groomed, that's just who he is.

Another thing I've noticed is that in very cold weather, men wear shorts with a hoodie and gilet. Their legs must be freezing!
