I desperately need some new make up (I’ve never worn loads) but struggling with knowing what to buy/which brand etc. and always feel the consultants in store are just trying to sell their brand. I need lipstick/eyeshadow/eyeliner and mascara plus a blusher - anyone found a particularly good well priced brand for over 65s?

You might like to try Tropic Skincare and makeup, which is natural and organic. Only available online or through an agent. They hold parties, where you can see their products and discuss what you’re looking for. Not cheap, but very good quality.

Recommend looking at Look Fabulous Forever too. Lots of really useful tutorials on their website, and I find their primer particularly good

I have been wearing makeup since I was 17,im 80 now and still love wearing it. Try guerlain, Estee lauder, Mac ,boots no.7 do good makeup as a starter, but don't go to a big store,go to a smaller pharmacy that do a good range. Often there is a specialist makeup artist who will give you personal attention.

You could try Look Fabulous Forever, which is specially formulated for older women. I have eye make up from them, its lovely. They have loads of tutorial videos too. www.lookfabulousforever.com/

I have always worn make up and feel lost without it. Nowadays…73…I wear less unless it is a special occasion. For every day I put on moisturiser then a thin layer of Boots No 7 tinted moisturiser which just smooths out some of the uneven skin tones whilst still looking as though there is nothing there. I use a little powder eyeshadow …cream colour…over my lids and entire socket, just a sweep, with then a sweep of colour…mink brown…over my lids and sweeping out and up. Barely there, but gives an uplift and an eye colour compliment again without really looking made up. Clinique for this as the colour can build if needed. I take a grey eye pencil…Avon glimmer stick…and with my eye closed just run it along the close. This pencil will just add a touch of colour without making a line…others often either leave a proper line or blobs, or do nothing. Again, it is a hint of darkness. I blend all the eye stuff with a brush to erase any lines or build up. Bit of mascara, firm believer in L’Oréal for this. And then, a bit of magic. I use either Touché Éclat Which? Is expensive, or Boots highlighter cream, dotting small bits under and out to the bottom of my temple…basically the under eye area. This freshens up my whole eye area and takes off years. Then 3 finishing touches. Sweep of shadow blusher in the hollows of my cheeks…just a touch! Touch of pink blusher just down the outside eye temple one on to the top of the apple of my cheek…not actually on the apple…and a bit of lips. I usually use the Max Factor long lasting one which adds colour but no gloss and lasts for ages. Takes about 5 minutes when you are used to it, then ready for what the day brings. BTW one of the favourite things my daughter and I do is book a free make up session at John Lewis and have such fun. Yes we do often end up buying something, but learn such allot of tips.

I am 78 and love L'Oréal Magic BB tinted moisturiser. It's a good price and gives you a light coverage that doesn't look like you have loads of makeup on. The other range I find is very good is Maybeline or Max Factor.

I've discovered Laura Geller Baked n Brighten it goes on like powder and stays put. I did have to try different shades and now have a winter spring and summer shade. But it will last a long time!

I'd suggest if you're not a regular makeup wearer to go to a counter & get advice on products & colours. Get a makeover & then wear it for the whole day before buying! Tinted moisturiser & blusher & lipstick. I never wear eye shadow sometimes mascara. Start there & then add more if you fancy. Liquids are normally best for mature skin, less dry looking!

Boots own range are as good as any to start..then go premium if you fancy! Loreal do a great Tinted Serum which is highly rated. Hot n Flashy on YouTube is a mine of info for products, tutorial etc too along with LFF.

Bobbi Brown & Jones Road products are good but not easy to find to play with/test, depends where you live!

My daughter bought me a Laura Geller pallette which contains blushers and eye shadow, also a compact which contains a powdered foundation. Along with this came a brush to apply. I love the products as they give a natural look without having that caked on look which is a no no for me.

I have used Estée Lauder Double wear foundation for a few years now (currently am 68 btw). Highly recommend as it goes on easily, doesn’t settle in the creases or pores and lasts hours.
Mascara wise, I am still looking! Have yet to find one that doesn’t run or smudge, since hot flushes set in. Have tried numerous. Currently using Mavala waterproof. Better than many but still have panda eyes after an hour or so on these hot days.

I'm a great fan of Boots No7 makeup, they are a great midprice range and often have 3 for 2 offers and £5 off vouchers, so it's not too much of a waste of money if something turns out not quite right. I've also had a few make up palettes as a freebie when I've bought from their range and it's a great way of trying eyeshadow and blusher. I particularly like their hydroluminous foundation (lovely, non-cakey coverage) and their tinted moisturiser for summer, and their tubing mascara is my favourite, it stays put through hell and high water. The consultants are always well informed and not at all pushy IMHO.
And no, I don't have shares in Boots 😁
Best of luck and have fun!

a few months ago before my niece's wedding I made an appointment with the makeup consultant at the No7 counter she spent ages with me and demonstrated a really good new look would recommend and I was not forced to buy anything I did not want.

I have a subscription to Beauty Pie which works out at less than £5/month. They have dupes of high end skincare and makeup (made in the same labs apparently) and the prices are so reasonable that I don't mind experimenting. They have online quizzes you can take to guide you and their customer service is great for advice too. My skin has improved so much, I just need products that enhance the glow. 65 in December ☺️

I’ve found- sorry

Fairlandia Mon 14-Jul-25 14:27:41

I’m 70 & I’ve always worn makeup; it makes me feel put together & polished. I suggest matte eyeshadows, which are good on crepey eyes. Cream blushers are best on older skin because powder can look too flat and a transparent lip colour looks more youthful. Everyone from Elf to YSL does them.
The big no nos for older faces are - no heavy black liner, no powder all over the face (just a tiny sprinkle on the t zone) and no dense matte lipstick. Also, get colour matched for foundation & concealer because skin becomes paler as we age. Good luck👍

TwiceAsNice Mon 14-Jul-25 14:14:28

I like elf eyeshadow palettes really reasonable and last. I have tried lots of lipsticks but always go back to Clinique , not cheap but the best I fond personally

Time2 Mon 14-Jul-25 14:07:19

OP I used to work for Clinique Cosmetics as a makeup consultant. You are correct in thinking that each make up counter will be trying to sell you their particular brand. The good thing about using some of the more expensive brands, is that if you find they don't suit your skin, you can send them back and either get your money back, or try something else. On the other hand, you could try purchasing from good old Avon, who also allow returns on any of their products if you're not happy with them. I've used their stuff on and off for years, and find them to be reasonably priced, compared to many, and obviously the peace of mind of being able to get your money back if it doesn't suit, is an added bonus.

Jcar Mon 14-Jul-25 14:00:44

Look Fabulous Forever is really good - I have been using their stuff for a few years now (I am 72) The online tutorials are really helpful and their customer service is second to none!

dogsmother Mon 14-Jul-25 13:59:36

I go for moisturiser, lip liner and lip moisturiser.
Waterliner as an eyeliner. Occasional mascara and bb cream and blush. This sounds a lot as I look but it is minimal.

Babamaman Mon 14-Jul-25 13:55:18

I use L’Oreal’s BB tinted cream. So good, so economical. Much lighter than traditional foundation.
Primark has very good products, not too expensive. So if you make a mistake or don’t like a colour or something you can easily change it.
Less is always best ! Good luck

Another vote for LFF

Prime Prometics, Jones Road, and Rumi are all very good. Jones Road is available at Liberty and is Bobby Brown. The other two are only online, but are specifically for older women. I have tried them all, and they are all good quality. I think multi use sticks are great, so think lip, cheek, and eye are good. I also think Revolution are great. They are much cheaper, but their products are great. Finally, look at Pixi - at Boots and Superdrug. I love their skincare, and makeup. There is a massive market out there. If you know if you are a warm or cold skin colour, that is a big help. Look at the veins on your wrist.
Finally- change your lipstick Winter and Summer. Don’t keep the same lipstick for ages. Experiment, and the right make up will give you confidence to love yourself.

I really like Laura Geller bronzer for this time of year and their pressed powder foundation used lightly. Mac Brûlée eye shadow cream and a Mavala gel pencil eyeliner in Forest. I use a waterproof Estée Lauder mascara and a light rose lipstick. I’m 66. It’s a mixture of brands but after trying most over the years these suit me best now!

mokryna Mon 14-Jul-25 13:48:46

I rarely wear make up these days, I found it too heavy on my skin but I do have bought Charlotte Tilbury and do like it.
I do admire women who wear makeup, they give a good impression that they care of their image, my DD’s MiL 80+ always puts me to shame but I am lazy.

AlpineGranny Mon 14-Jul-25 13:37:55

There is Look Fabulous Forever created for older skin. They have very good makeover videos too and a vibrant Facebook group
