Make Up over 65

I desperately need some new make up (I’ve never worn loads) but struggling with knowing what to buy/which brand etc. and always feel the consultants in store are just trying to sell their brand. I need lipstick/eyeshadow/eyeliner and mascara plus a blusher - anyone found a particularly good well priced brand for over 65s?

I’m 73 and have not worn make up for around a year and a half since diagnosed with interstitial lung disease and being on supplemental oxygen 24/7!

It’s a shame really as I used to like going out with makeup on. But when you’ve got a wretched cannula on your nose you feel ugly anyway. But I mustn’t complain as it’s keeping me alive 😔

I live on my own and spend 90% of my time in my recliner watching TV and have become reclusive since my diagnosis but how I long to go out somewhere again, nice dress on and makeup!

I always use a tinted moisturiser now. It gives a light cover without looking painted. I'm not bothering with eye makeup during the hot weather because it just makes my eyes itch, but I think lipstick is a must to give your face a bit of life.

Estee Lauder Double Wear foundation is the best ever. I've tried many brands over the years but always come back to it. All skin imperfections are concealed and it stays in place no matter how hot and sticky the weather is!

Hi me again sorry … if you have not noticed there is a large free standing box for recycled products except glass. Just hand them to counter away from cosmetics 5 at a time they put 500 points on your Boots card brilliant I have been going through all my products they must be empty also take sample sizes. I have made at least £100 then wait for a £10 voucher week on No 7 and also combines 3 for 2 day and with your points great savings. Ps they also have a big box by the prescription counter for blister packs (tablets)

Hi I am 84 still particular about hair and face. Foundation always sinks in lines BUT there is hope I use L’Oréal perfect match concealer only most days covers brown patches dab some on my nose and around eyes Boots help you choose right shade slim square shape. Does not sink in the bigger version is awful Also Boots new range No 7 Pro Artist weightless silk foundation is excellent does not sink in lines a little goes a long way.mascara Pro Artist is also excellent no clumping or bits under eye. Clinic blusher in Apple is brilliant very light you can apply more but it blends well. Added good thing is No 7 tinted sun cream Protector and perfect intense advanced facial sun protection I use fair I think there are 3 shades.

Elf is a good buy, I use their primer …. I am 72, and try to look reasonable🤞🥰

I find more is less to make me feel good. I currently use Superdrug’s Solait 50 as a base to prevent the sun’s damage. Throughout the rest of the year I use Nivea nourishing day cream
My “go to” foundation is Esteée Lauder Futurist Hydra Rescue and Avon True Colour blusher which lasts all day and gives me a glow that enhances my natural pale complexion. I rarely use eye makeup but find L’Oreal telescopic mascara best to put on ageing eyelashes. Finally I have a range of lipsticks from cheap and cheerful Rimmel to expensive EL in a range of colours to suit my outfit and my mood. I’m 73 and I’m told I look much younger!! As a well known supermarket would say “ every little helps” 🤭

I live this is gives you a tiny hint of colour glow .
Plus Clinique mascara the silver tube
Clinique lips
Charlotte tilbury eyeliner only along half your lower eye
Some body shop powder to Matt me but I know more dewy looking is in .
A quartet of revlon eyeshadows in mink beige shades as it shows you different shadow ideas on the back .

The blusher I use is Nars ,Orgasm. I have had friends say how well I look when I have used it but they always think that I am joking when I tell them what it is!

Estée Lauder Double wear foundation. Brilliant.
Also Estee Lauder Double Wear Zero Smudge Lengthening mascara (in black) which is the only mascara I've tried which literally doesn't smudge! Cheapest is on Amazon. And Bourgoise eye pencil - cheap as chips and I think I bought my last green one on amazon.

I wear a tinted moisturiser with SPF and elf eyebrow pencil, mini eyeshadow palettes, lip balm and coloured eye liner . All from Superdrug , I have yet to find a long lasting lips stick that doesn’t dry out my lips or mascara that doesn’t make my eyes run .Have fun .

Bluemini62 Mon 14-Jul-25 18:01:04

It’s Trinny London UK

Bluedaisy Mon 14-Jul-25 17:38:08

I’m another one for Charlotte Tilbury but I also like Trinny online. I’m 68 and love make up that once on stays put as I can’t be doing with faffing during the day. Trinny BFF is beautiful, light but with a soft doesn’t sit in lines and looks lovely on.

I wear make up every day. I don't feel complete without it. My friend suggested I use M Asam Magic Finish classic for my wedding day 2 weeks ago. I am not a fan of foundation unless absolutely necessary ( post major surgery etc) but felt the day warranted it. It's very light ( mousse) and felt comfortable to wear and still looked good 12 hours later. I ignore all the rules about either eye or lips and wear both. Eye shadow is from an Avon palette of 4v with lovely blues and greens and greys (still available on eBay)! My eye liner is like a felt tip in a deep blue/green and my mascara is blue one ( I told you I ignored all the rules). Lipstick is the Maybelline one they've just discontinued that lasts 24 hours it's in a dull copper colour which I love. If you feel more comfortable then go and get some advice and before you buy any of their recommendations buy some cheap versions and experiment. You really don't need to spend a fortune on make up...buy and do what suits you best. Good Luck.

Another vote for Laura Geller. I really like the baked foundation they sell, it suits my skin which is normal to dry. I find it quick to use and it gives a light covering which lets your skin show through

As I get older after wearing make up every day since my teens, I find I cannot wear eye makeup up as my eyes stream (I've tried lots of different makes even for sensitive eyes and contact lens wearers ) but my eyes still stream.

Mojack26 Mon 14-Jul-25 16:44:59

There are many good brands that are reasonably priced. You're 4 years younger than me go into Bootsor big dept store and get some helo

Cronesrule

I have used Estée Lauder Double wear foundation for a few years now (currently am 68 btw). Highly recommend as it goes on easily, doesn’t settle in the creases or pores and lasts hours.
Mascara wise, I am still looking! Have yet to find one that doesn’t run or smudge, since hot flushes set in. Have tried numerous. Currently using Mavala waterproof. Better than many but still have panda eyes after an hour or so on these hot days.

Have you thought of having your lashes dyed? That might be your answer. I used to do this, but missed the full look that mascara gives, so I applied clear mascara. No runs and lovely lashes!

I can’t believe I just said that I am 77 I really don’t recognise that coukd possibly be me ( recent birthday).

Join the club! I feel about 35 (I’m 79…eek!)
When I look in the mirror, I don’t see my Mother, like most people do. I see my Grandmother.
It’s a bugg*r getting old, but I can’t say I fancy the alternative!

Tenko Mon 14-Jul-25 16:30:04

I’m 66 and wear makeup most days . I wear a Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser during the day , it has 30 spf and jones road cream blusher or a trinny of London one , also doubles as a lip balm . I use a brown or bronze eye liner pencil . I only use mascara if I’m going out and use a MAC one . Oh and I use an ELF primer , it gives a dewy look .
I’m another beauty pie convert , they have lovely products at a great price . They have a lovely chest and neck serum .
If you’re not confident, go into a large boots for advice or a branch of space NK , they both have lots of different products.

I’m a fan of Look Fabulous Forever. Their make up is specially for over 50s. It’s reasonably priced and you can return it free of charge within 30 days if it doesn’t suit. The staff at LFF are very good with advice. There’s also a series of helpful videos online. All the make up is sold online.

Littlebea02 Mon 14-Jul-25 16:28:09

My best makeup tip is a magnifying mirror. I have one and it stays with me wherever I go. I don’t use Foundation the older we get the fine lines simply are defined if we put foundation on our skin I do use shadow a very very light colour and mascara and eyeliner There again. My best tip is magnifying mirror so that you don’t overdo and it really shows you what you look like, lol. I’ve tried so many mascara I’ve always been looking for one that does not clump and have never been successful.
