The pros and cons of elastane

It seems to be everywhere, is it just me, or do you not want elastane in your tops and T-shirts either? I’m not overweight, but I find I’m having to buy bigger sizes because tops with elastane in my size cling to every less than perfect part of me, and look unflattering, and the bigger sizes don’t fit as well on the neckline, shoulders etc. On the other hand, trousers and jeans with elastane fit better…

I don't mind a bit of elastane. I have tops with it and tops without it, depending on the style.

Having said that, I have been known to go up a size if the elastane makes a top too clingy.

Isn’t it what we used to call Lycra?

AmberGran Sat 16-Aug-25 15:07:50

Pretty much - I think it's all elastane, Lycra and Spandex are brand names I think.

Aldom Sat 16-Aug-25 15:11:37

Elastane is the generic term. Lycra a brand name.

One thing to consider is that 100% cotton garments will decompose in time - those containing elastane will stay on the planet for ever

I just don’t think it’s flattering unless you have a sylph like figure, although it’s fine for exercise clothes, and it ensures that clothes don’t stretch. Maybe manufacturers don’t take the cling factor into account, and should use more fabric to compensate.

Yes. Lycra is the brand name.

I find them to clingy in the hot weather and prefer to go for 100% cotton for comfort. Also usually go up a size as fitted clothes don't work for me in the heat.

I like knickers to have a bit of elastane so they feel slightly supportive.

OP with me it is the other way around. Jeans with elastane are a no-go, as they cling in the wrong places, whereas tops are all right, although I do prefer t-shirts that are pure cotton.

I have found my skirts all seem to ‘come with stretch’. So freshly washed they fit a little ‘snug’! However by the end of the day they have grown, it’s so annoying.

Bridie22 Sat 23-Aug-25 15:11:10

I find clothing with elastane in very scratchy on my skin.

Greciangirl Sat 23-Aug-25 15:22:06

Yes, I’m not keen on stretchy tops.
Much too clingy.
I prefer something a little looser to hide my tummy.

Vests are nice with a bit of stretch in them.
And as mentioned, stretch in knickers are very comfortable.

I have no waist and narrow hips so the only chance of a women's pair of short fitting me is if they have stretch on the waist. Otherwise they look like jodhpurs if they fit the waist.

I don't mind elastane in my pants but don't want it in my T-shirts.

valdavi Sat 23-Aug-25 18:44:57

I don't want it in my pants either - joggers & ski pants, fine. But when I'm buying new jeans I often have to buy mens' as I can't find any decent womens' ones without elastane.
I have skinny hips & thunderthighs & if I have stretchy jeans or cords, they will work down until the gusset is halfway down my thighs. As for tops, I never buy elastane ones, although they're good to prevent gaping necklines when you bend down.
