Hello everyone, I want to treat myself to a cashmere cardigan and have spotted a perfect one on the Pure website. Can anyone tell me whether their cashmere pills badly please? Or are there other brands you would recommend? Thank you.

I have several cashmere sweaters, and find the Cashmere shop in Masham a good place to look for more. They also do repairs and so forth and are good about checking the problem and giving you a good idea of the price. You can also see them on line and they show both the cashmere and also lovely silk scarves too. I have always found the staff most helpful and not at all pushy, so would definitely suggest that that is a good place to start. I have always washed my cashmere by hand and with care, and it has paid off. One of my very old ones started to get a couple of holes under the arms, but it was brilliant to wrap in plastic bag and put at the bottom of rucksac, so that if you were up on the tops and the weather turned cold or windy, they were still marvellous to war and keep warm. They are worth taking care off and give me a lot of comfort and warmth.

Thank you both. I will definitely check out John Lewis. Johnstones are sadly out of my price range but they have some beautiful pieces.

I bought a Johnstone's cashmere jumper from T K Maxx but obviously it's hit and miss whether they have any at any particular time. It wore better than the ones from M&S, however they were reasonably good and cheaper.

Pure cashmere used to be excellent, they were bought by Woolovers and I don’t find the items as they used to be. Agree with others that Brora or Cashmere Centre are far superior, worth looking at House of Bruar as they have some lovely Scottish brands of cashmere.

Agree about Woolovers. House of Bruar’s customer service is awful. Johnstons of Elgin are good but don’t know if they have a website.

M&S have been disappointing as has John Lewis.
Both have pilled and I-have resorted after a very short time to wearing them under fleeces for warmth in cold weather.
I do like the idea of cashmere but haven’t yet found one that washes and wears.

If you live in the north of England there is a fantastic cashmere stall on Masham market and Helmsley markets.
He has M&S, White Company, Pure and more.

There is/was a second hand cashmere shop in Masham. Is the market stall anything to do with them?

No it’s nothing to do with them, the shop has moved slightly out of Masham, their business is mainly online.

Nothing wrong with good old M/S for cashmere. Many colours. The others mention are overly expensive in my view. Had mine for years. I buy a new M/S cashmere once a year and they wash well. Look after them and last for years. Good Luck shopping.

Cashmere centre.Expensive but perfect. Never pill.

I've got 5 of the thin gassato (sp?) swing cardigans from Pure. The black ones (I have 2!) have pilled horribly but the blue, red and grey ones are fine.
My best ones though have been from Brora but they're madly expensive these days and rather stodgy in style. I have a black, 4 ply one from there that is over 20 years old and would still be perfect if I hadn't gone through it at the elbow. I bought some cashmere yarn online and knitted a diamond shape patch for it.

I think whatever cashmere you buy it will pill, even the most expensive - and they can get VERY expensive. As others have said, using a debobbler regularly will do the trick. I use a battery operated one. Although if you have to use it a lot, as I have done, it will, of course, eventually get thinner. I have bought a lot of cashmere from Pure in the past -not recently because changes in the company seem to have resulted in a poorer selection of colours, from my point of view. But I always thought it was quite good cashmere for the price.

By far and away the best quality cashmere is Scottish cashmere which will stay like new for years. I can recommend a business based very near to where I live in North Yorkshire called Nearly New Cashmere which sells re-conditioned cashmeres online for a lot less than you’d pay in the high street and they also have new Scottish cashmere pieces too. I’ve had some fantastic bargains from them. M & S Autograph is good value for money too.

I love cashmere but have a moth problem! Have tried clearing out wardrobes and using anti-moth products to no avail. I tend to wear my husbands holey jumpers to the allotment 🤭. He freezes then vacuum packs them now but if anyone has any practicable advice/tips I’d love to hear them.

Cyclistmumgrandma Wed 08-Oct-25 14:22:11

I buy my cashmere from "Nearly New Cashmere Co". So far the three pieces I have bought have been immaculate. Husband is currently sitting next to me wearing the cashmere navy crew neck I bought for him. Not much pilling and very comfortable! Very reasonable prices too.

I bought a few cashmere jumpers last year from The White Company and M&S. All of them pilled badly and I spent far too much time faffing about with a comb. My old Uniqlo has been the best so far. Current cashmere is even more expensive and I don't want another pile of unwearable and highly expensive jumpers. I have noticed how much thinner the knit is too. Merino for me this year.

Newgran59 Wed 08-Oct-25 14:10:05

Uniqlo used to have some lovely basic lightweight cashmere jumpers and cardigans which lasted ages, machine washed and didn't bobble. Not sure if they still do them though...

mabon2 Wed 08-Oct-25 13:51:41

John Lewis, or Pure Collection are very good. I 've had a number of their pieces, they wash well and always look good and don't bobble. They are very warm from such a lightweight garment.

wildrose Tue 07-Oct-25 16:26:18

I have skate been happy with my Uniqlo purchases. I do need something hip length though and find they can be on the short side.
I'm off to check out Me+Em but I have ordered the Pure cardigan already as I love the shade of grey!

Boz Tue 07-Oct-25 13:06:13

I buy all my cashmere from Me+Em but at Sale price as the styling is good. Some are 5 years old and I have had to stop buying this year as I reckon, at 82, 20 plus jumpers, in pristine condition, because I carefully wash by hand in cold water, will see me out.
They are high maintenance and you need a cashmere comb but the warmth is wonderful.
I have just given a GD a cardigan and have worrying moments as to how it is fairing.

westendgirl Tue 07-Oct-25 12:47:46

Btw I haven't found that Uniqlo cashmere balls up. It does last too .

westendgirl Tue 07-Oct-25 12:45:55

Uniqlo have great cashmere which washes very well. It comes in a good choice of colours and is reasonably priced. A great purchase.
